Video Games Finished in 2017

- Slain: Back from Hell (Switch)

I guess I just don't get old school revival games that keep all the annoying aspects of 80s games. That style may have been fun at the time but it's really just ridiculously tedious. [image]

- RiME (Switch)
There's a good game here somewhere, if only it wasn't burdened with serious technical issues. I practically got a headache watching the stuttering frame rate. [image]

- The Sexy Brutale (Switch)
Also has some technical issues but they're much less damaging to the game. Aside from that this is a great little mystery story with a fun, macabre sense of style. [image]

- Nine Parchments (Switch)
Fun Gauntlet-style co-op game, though it really feels tailored to couch co-op. Coordinating with random players online seems almost impossible. [image]

- Batman: The Telltale Series (Switch)
This has most of the same problems I have with all Telltale games but I'll admit it isn't as bad as some of their other games. Touting the game as being choice-driven still seems dumb to me, but the story isn't half bad in this one. [image]

12/28: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

My sort of ongoing goal since it came out in April was a success! With a few days (and a weekend off) to spare. Honestly, not sure why it took me so long to get into this. Once I really got determined to finish it I had no problems getting really into it. Overall I enjoyed it but also have some mixed feelings about parts of it. The voice acting, story and characters I felt were all great. The use of magic and archers was interesting compared to other games and I actually think I prefer how they worked in Echoes over the other games I've played. As someone who plays the game the weird way of playing on classic but reset when someone dies, I loved Mila's turnwheel. However, the map designed frustrated me a lot, some of them were just tedious in design. Why do maps need to be the size where there can be several turns before my army reaches the enemy (unless I overextend a flier or something) and the game relied on the "summoner" enemy way too often. In most cases the enemies they summoned were just a nuisance, a few maps with that mechanic would have been fine, but especially on Celica's route got old real quick. The maps also never really mixed it up as far as objectives go from what I can remember. Some of the maps felt like such a slog that if Mila's Turnwheel wasn't a thing I may have stopped playing (or gave in and switched to casual). It would be one thing if they actually made the fights more interesting or challenging but in most cases, it just made them more tedious. The 3D dungeons were neat but overall kind of a mediocre feature. If they returned I wouldn't mind but I also wouldn't miss them. All said and done I liked it more than I disliked it, and would love to see more "Echoes" games come from it (Genealogy of the Holy War please?).

With that my year in games probably comes ot a close. Not a whole ton knocked out this year but looking at that list those are all games I really enjoyed so it balanced out I suppose. I do have a pretty open weekend and no work Monday, so maybe I'll see if I can squeeze in some short game somewhere that I have laying around, but if not I feel happy enough that I knocked out what I wanted to.

Last game I'll beat of the year is A Hat In Time (Steam).

Overall, I enjoyed it. But the game had a lot of jank, with some of the level design and camera. I still have a decent amount of time pieces to go back and get... Unsure if I'm going to do that.

I chose this game over Yooka-Laylee, was wondering if anyone could offer any input on that? I still might go pick it up since it's still on sale... I think.

12/31: Limbo

I did manage to sneak one more game in and in doing so can say I at least managed to a couple games out of my backlog. Pretty sure I got Limbo back in some Humble Bundle sale and it's just been sitting unplayed on Steam for a long time. Since I didn't have anything special planned for New Year's Eve I decided to try to knock out a game I could beat in a sitting and Limbo was the most interesting looking and more plausible to actually knock out. Definitely a fun and interesting game. I quit enjoyed the puzzles and melenchaloy atmosphere. I may not sing the praises I've seen some people say about it but it was certainly enjoyable. I know based on timezone it's already 2018 for some people so I guess I should point out it's only 10:30 here, sorry Gold for sneaking one in this late lvhappy;

Not that I'm leading the scores or anything anyways.... With that, I beat 10 games this year, two of which are mobile. But like I said in my last post most of the games I did spend significant time on I enjoyed a lot so I guess I'm ok with that. Here's hoping I'll do a better job next year, my backlog isn't getting any shorter. I managed to have a net score of 0 on my backloggery progress index, but hey at least I wasn't negative.

Final update. Beat 34 game with my final one being yesterday with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Was a splendid game and on par with Zelda BotW in epicness. PB's master post

1/27/17 Windwaker HD / WiiU

* I liked the GC version of WW with its almost playing a living cartoon action.  I did hate on the style when it released but but when I played it , I got it.... it worked the cell shading to a level that felt immersive.   I still have the GC game, but what I beat was the HD version I got for Christmas.  I found the HD visuals to look slightly better than the old GC version but the draw distances are SO MUCH BETTER.  Swift Sail is a MUST.... makes life so much easier.   That said, I found the gamepad play to un-Godly frustrating at times.... especially the Z-targeting not wanting to cycle off like it should so I could get around to the back of those Darknuts/Armos Knights.... or being caught up targeting the minor enemies/trap enemies when trying to focus my attacks on a boss.  I really almost returned to the Olympic form I had with tossing NES controllers in frustration.

2/10/17  Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World / 3DS

*100% all wonder wools not tied to Special or Star Wolrds.

Great game.  I loved the WiiU version.  It wasn't too hard a decision to double dip.

4/20/17 Bye Bye Box Box Boy / 3DS

Loved the game and the new abilities the incorporated.  OF the new stuff, the bombs, warps, and remotes were worth it and felt inspired.  I have not beaten the challenge levels.  I was kind of sad they dropped the the dual structure technique from the last game though.

4/21/17 Super Bomberman R / Switch

Well, I had the credits roll from single player mode.  I really like the new arenas and some of the new Bombermen.  Not a bad game.  I just have to wonder why this game didn't run as smooth as Bomberman Blast did on Wii.  The game is a nice return to form of the series. I would have loved to have seen the body slams from Bman 64 return, the huts and Kangaroos from Bman '94, and some of Bman Blast's open area arenas...

4/25/17 LoZ: BotW / Switch

Pretty satisfying game content wise.  It did have some issues IMO, but overall, much better than the last few.

5/6 Mario Kart 8 DLX / Switch

3* Mirror and down

Varying Gold Cups in 200cc

ALL Racers and Kart parts unlocked sans the 5K tier Gold Glider.

5/7 Update:

ALL Cups 3*

ALL Kart Parts including Gold Parts.

6/24 Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap / Switch

* I had this game on WiiVC and could never get to Hawk Man as those ninjas in the shrine...grrr....  I got past that barrier in this version.  I loved it.

11/1 Super Mario Odyssey / Switch

*"Main Game"

*Haven't done "post game" ...yet....

Around 260 on moon count...

I did ok I guess, considering all that I had going on this year.

Not sure why Poochy and Yoshi didn't have a note update by me about having ALL THE SPECIAL CONSOLE YOSHIS.  There are only 2  or 3 Yoshis I'd have left to unlock for a full 100% and that would be Sliver, Gold, and Platinum challenge Yoshis(?).  I did get Bronze Yoshi.

My Super Mario Odyssey Counter is 600+ as of this post.  I do plan to go for all of them but it will be a while before I get motivated to fire back up the game to finish it out.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (all 3 stars, all parts, all normal time trials)
Yooka-Laylee (100%/platinum)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (all shrines, all medals, all DLC, all side quests; not all Korok Seeds)
Star Fox (SNES Classic – All Paths)
Super Ghouls n Ghosts (SNES Classic – Normal/9)
Super Mario Kart (SNES Classic – All cups, all spd, 1st place overall)
Kirby Super Star (SNES Classic – 100%)
Super Mario World (SNES Classic)
Yoshi’s Island (SNES Classic – 100% all levels)
Super Castlevania IV
Donkey Kong Country (max%)
Minecraft (Bedrock Edition-Xbox One)
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Snipperclips Plus (all levels, but not random-shape mode)
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (100%)
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Pirate Queen’s Quest (all trophies)
F-Zero (all Leagues on Normal; Knight on Expert to unlock Master Class)
Mega Man X (all upgrades)
VS. Super Mario Bros.
Blast Master Zero (100% ending)
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Friends to the End
Star Fox 2 (all 52 medals, Expert beaten)
Super Mario Odyssey (100% everything)
Star Fox Guard (100% story and extra missions)
Gravity Rush: Remastered (100%)

Handheld = 8:
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (all missions and costumes)
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (2 playthroughs - one where I recruited all characters, and 1 "kill everyone for gaiden chapters" playthrough)
Mario vs Donkey Kong (hi score each level)
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (100%)
Metroid: Samus Returns (100%)
Metroid: Zero Mission (100%)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

PC = 5:
Sonic 3 & Knuckles (full playthroughs as Sonic and Knuckles, but not Tails)
Sonic CD
Sonic Adventure DX (w/ BetterSADX mod)
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Sonic Generations (100%, all S rank)

Mobile = 2:
Fire Emblem Heroes (beat all current story and paralogues)
Super Mario Run (beat main game and extra missions.  Did not unlock Red Yoshi or all coins)

Other (These do not count, so I didn't include them in the total):
8-Bit Bayonetta - not really a proper game, but I got all the Steam achievements.
Gravity Rush (Vita) - I also beat Gravity Rush: Remastered this year, so this doesn't count.
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (as Ken) - I also beat HD Remix this year, so this doesn't count.
Panel de Pon (Easy Mode) - I played this on an emulator and don't own an actual copy, so this doesn't count.

I feel like my total is somewhat inflated for 2017 due to the SNES Classic; I replayed games I normally wouldn't have, and some of the news games I played on it weren't very long, but oh well.  Disney Afternoon Collection also factors in, with 6 fairly short games.  Still, 55 (+4) games is pretty good for me.  I don't know if 2018 will be that high, but who knows...I still have some SNES Classic games to beat, plus hopefully I'll be able to get an NES Classic, plus the Mega Man X Collection.

I didn't meet certain goals in 2017; I really wanted to beat Xenoblade Chronicles X in preparation for 2, but that did not happen yet.  Also didn't get through FE Fates Conquest or Revelation.  Going to try to get through more of my backlog in January/February of this year for sure.
