Until Trump, I believed that official public spectacles of personal loyalty and nationalism that reminded me of the Stalinism were limited to dictatorships.

This Mike Pence "prayer" of thanks to Trump is excruciatingly, stomach-churningly uncomfortable to watch. The ritual submission and exaltation is nearly pornographic. This is not America.

Not the prayer aspect, of course, but as we see now with Putin and have seen so many times throughout history, religion in the service of power is always about power, not religion.

Following Following @MarkWarner

It's time to draw the line: any attempt by President Trump to interfere with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation would provoke a constitutional crisis.

That means:

- Firing Robert Mueller or top FBI or DOJ brass overseeing the investigation.

- Pardoning key witnesses in an effort to shield them from accountability

- Any other attempt to shut down the investigation

Any of these actions would be a gross abuse of power and a flagrant violation of Executive branch responsibilities and authorities. These are red lines, and we simply cannot allow them to be crossed.

In recent weeks, a growing chorus of voices in Congress, the media, and the White House have begun pushing a coordinated narrative undermining the credibility of the Special Counsel’s investigation and the FBI itself.

These statements are reckless. They are inappropriate. And they are extremely worrying.

While the President has said he is not considering removing Special Counsel Mueller, the President’s track record on this front is a source of concern.  I’m certain many of my colleagues believed that he wouldn’t possibly fire Mr. Comey, either.

Firing Mr. Mueller or any of the top brass involved in this investigation would call into question this Administration’s commitment to the truth and the rule of law.

In the United States of America, no one is above the law. Not even the President.

Congress must make clear to the President that firing the Special Counsel, or interfering with his investigation by issuing pardons of essential witnesses, is unacceptable, and would have immediate and significant consequences.

I hope my concerns are unfounded, but there are troubling signs.  It is critical that we as elected officials, and as citizens, speak up against these threats now…before it is too late.

Some veteran intelligence operators think it’s well past time to shift the narrative on Trump’s disturbing affinity for Putin, which the president insists is innocent and good for world peace. “Everyone continues to dance around a clear assessment of what’s going on,” says Glenn Carle, a former CIA national intelligence officer responsible for evaluating foreign threats. “My assessment,” he tells Newsweek, “is that Trump is actually working directly for the Russians.”

Q: As troubled as you seem to be, is there some gratification for you in trying to share certain messages and sensibilities?

A: Yeah, and a lot of pride in our players' willingness to speak out. I don't know if you saw the Sally Yates column (written by the former acting attorney general in USA TODAY on Dec. 19). I read it this morning, and I tweeted it. It’s fantastic. But there's absolutely an assault on our institutions and on our core values as a country. She tweeted the preamble to the Constitution, which really sums up our country. And all those things are kind of under attack right now.

One of the things she writes is how important it is to speak the truth, and for people to not be deceived, coerced. That's the entire reasoning behind the structure of our government, you know? Checks and balances. But it goes beyond the checks and balances. It's up to the citizens to, ‘We The People,’ right? It's not ‘We the President and Congress.’ It's ’We The People, in order to form a more perfect union ...’ So, who's The People? You and I are the People. … We all are. Steph (Curry) and Draymond (Green) and KD (Kevin Durant). So it's important for all of us to call b-------, and there's a lot of b------- right now, and propaganda, and misinformation. You can't let that happen. The truth has to always win out, and our institutions and ideals have to win out, so it's important that we speak out.”

Q: So with that in mind, what lies ahead for you in terms of how you use your voice. The Pop/Kerr thing, to me …

(Kerr laughs.)

Q: Right, so that’s your normal reaction. But to your point about “We the People,” – I mean, we have a reality television star as President, so there are no rules to this game.

A: Well, that’s been established. (laughs)

Q: Project a little bit. Could you see yourself going down that political road?

A: No, I can't imagine getting into politics. It sounds horrible. It sounds awful. What would you rather do, coach basketball or be in the government? ... I'm not interested or qualified for something like that. But again, I think if you have a voice, you've got to use it. It just drives me nuts, though, the sort of selective morality that exists, you know? I think what's happening is that because of the nature of the life that we all live, with modern media, social media. You're seeing it manifest itself in so many ways, whether it's men being exposed for sexual harassment or corruption at many levels that's being exposed. … Like this Jerry Richardson guy (the Carolina Panthers owner who put the team up for sale after accusations of workplace misconduct).

Before, these things were all swept under the rug. And now, everything is sort of out in the open. But what comes with that, with everything being out in the open, is enormous amounts of misinformation and lies and propaganda, and so people trying to coerce others. It's just a reminder that this is the tendency of mankind. The history of the world is that people are going to look out for themselves, and people are going to be power hungry. That's one of the reasons our country has been so successful is we have these institutions in place to protect us from ourselves, and so the institutions have to win out. The only way that's going to happen is if we keep calling b-------, so that's my approach. I just have to join the coalition that's calling b-------.

Former CIA Director John Brennan repeatedly expressed his profound concerns about the state of American leadership on MSNBC today.

Given the comments by NSA Director Mike Rogers this week on not being given the proper authority to respond to Russian meddling, Brennan told Nicolle Wallace President Trump should be concerned about the Russians attempting to meddle in the midterms and in 2020.

He said it’s no secret Trump was “very ill-prepared” for dealing with serious matters like these, and now it’s “coming to roost.”

Brennan also called Trump “unstable” and unethical before saying the following:

“When I hear what Vladimir Putin was saying just yesterday about the nuclear capabilities that he has, and then the President of the United States is tweeting about Alec Baldwin this morning––I mean, where is your sense of priorities? I think a lot of Americans are looking at what’s happening with a sense of, you know, ‘this is surreal.'”

Graham made the comments in an interview with CNN.

"All the damage that would come from a war would be worth it in terms of long-term stability and national security," the senator told CNN.

In the closed-door remarks, a recording of which was obtained by CNN, Trump also praised China's President Xi Jinping for recently consolidating power and extending his potential tenure, musing he wouldn't mind making such a maneuver himself.

"He's now president for life. President for life. No, he's great," Trump said. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot some day."

Probably an odd segue to toss in here but it's kind of an annoying situation I keep finding myself in whether online or face to face discussing various topics with people.  So the gun debate is still a fairly fresh issue so at work or even online I'll find myself talking about it with people. Even with differing opinions the discussions are usually nice because they don't get too crazy and I find myself learning new things here and there just by being a part of it.  But more and more the past couple of weeks and especially after the recent "March for Our Lives" rally, it's hard to actually discuss anything regarding the victims of Parkland in particular let alone other mass shootings without being met with people who end their side of the argument with snarky comments like "well, why should we listen to the generation known for eating tide pods?" or "if God was allowed back in schools this stuff wouldn't happen as often or at all" and then ultimately the good ol' "let's just agree to disagree" and that's about it.  It's just frustrating because there's no real discourse to be had with some people I actually talk to consistently on various goings on in the world when they find/see certain outlets that lead them to such "hand waving" bulletpoints.  The conspiracy theories going around certainly aren't helping anything either.
