April
it's not a total replacement and has loads of problems on its own but discord's consolidation of irc/vent/instant messenger becoming a thing that everybody uses now is nice. it's just about the closest thing to small communities (that aren't at high risk of dying out at any given moment) that we have online nowadays. and there's no concerted effort to shove more content in your face. it will definitely be sold at some point along with everybody's data (if that hasn't happened already) and turn into a horrid mess like everything else but i appreciate it for the time being Stephen 776 and bel 2 Link to comment

Youtube is basically the go-to site for stuff that isn't on TV or streaming services. I still use Tumblr now and then. Generally to listen to music and to retweet pics and stuff. But it's generally still filled with porn bots. So I'm busy blocking porn bots. By comparison to Twitter though, it's less of a hassle. Twitter's algorithm keeps on deboosting random people and makes it a pain to even bother with the site as a whole. Link to comment

April
i'm confused. were we talking about social media sites or sites in general that people are on? well regardless of the number the entire internet has basically consolidated almost exclusively into massive corporate-backed services that profit via data farming and it's pretty dang lame! and kind of terrifying! not to mention the extensively studied negative psychological effects of social media! i think we're all on the same page here lol Link to comment
Tyranogre
There's a great documentary-style miniseries by Mr. Enter about the dangers of the modern internet. It's about three and a half hours long altogether, but is split into eight parts focusing on a single website each. Quite an interesting watch; I highly recommend it. Doc Brown 1 Link to comment

Tyranogre
One thing that I regret about my username is that I always get confused whenever someone uses "ty" as an acronym for "thank you", or when Sarah talks about her spouse. April 1 Link to comment
April
pichi was given to me as a nickname 10 or 11 years ago and i'm happy with it as my actual name now it means a ton of different things though so ppl are always telling me like "hey did you know pichi means ___ in [language]?" but the most confusion i get is actually when watching japanese ppl play Mario because Peach is ピーチ (piichi) and the difference is subtle out loud lol alienboyva 1 Link to comment
EH_STEVE
I joined NSider when I was like 17 for the sole purpose of becoming a Sage so I could get a Triforce pin. I eventually gave up trying and just enjoyed the community. Then I made Sage in the second last round before they closed the boards. April, alienboyva and Doc Brown 3 Link to comment
Chrom
The thing about NSider that takes me by surprise every time is remembering it was only around for four years. It technically started much earlier with Loudhouse/HTS/etc. but the NSider forums as we know it didn't actually run for as long as my memory tries to recall it. For perspective this very site has been active for just as much time. Doc Brown, alienboyva, April and 1 other 4 Link to comment
Tyranogre
You know one thing that I kinda miss in video games that technically never really went away? Title screens. With the 3DS and before, whenever I took it with me on my commute, it made sense to find a save point and turn the power all the way off once I got to my last stop, since just closing it or putting it in sleep mode could still drain the battery. Thus, when it was time to leave, I had to boot the system all the way back up and look at the title screen again in order to keep playing on the way home. But now, since the Switch and Vita are so much better at conserving the battery in sleep mode, it's more efficient to just put them to sleep when I get to work, and just wake them up again when I get on the BART home to continue EXACTLY from where I left off. This means that the only time I get to see a game's title screen, is when I boot it up for the first time that playthrough (unless there's either a software update, or when I fuck up something RNG-based and do a soft-reset). Sure, it's more convenient this way, but a lot of games have such great title screens that it's a shame that I don't get to see them that often. Doc Brown 1 Link to comment
Stephen 776
Edit: oops, I'm seemingly half a day late to this discussion ----------- Most places on tumblr are fine post porn ban; like it's still a big social media website even though it took a hit. The porn ban was never really about removing porn; but rather their owner wanted to pretend to care about porn for sweet sweet advertisement money. Half-assed, inconsistent, and haphazard describes the situation pretty well; porn still probably exists on tumblr because unless their advertisement money is getting yoinked, why do they care? Most of the corners I visited, however, seemingly got ripped; my guess is because important tags like BL got soft-banned (but yaoi is fine lmao)--like untagged fanart was something I saw quite a bit post ban--so it just is hard to sustain a network like that. F. Anyway, I'm on that birdapp now, and it's good enough I guess. Discord is very nice though. I'm not the biggest fan of real-time chats because it often takes me time to put my thoughts together so I tend to be a lot more quiet there (just like in real-life lol), but I do appreciate how many smaller communities can exist on Discord so I use it a lot. It's going to feel like it lasted longer than it did, especially given the long tails of the DS and Wii. alienboyva, Doc Brown and Kodiack 3 Link to comment
