What did the word "simp" used to mean before the internet decided that it means "one who says anything remotely positive about a woman"?

This reminds me I was surprised to see the word "simp" used in Pokemon Ruby, when you first meet the leader of Team Magma in Slateport City.

This also reminds that while recently replaying Pokemon White, an artist trainer says, "Looks like I've been white-washed!" upon defeat.

On a completely different topic, I recently acquired a PS5 (disc version). It's rekindled my interest in playing PS games. After I finally finish FF7R, I was thinking on playing Nier:automata. I also thought of recently trying to play Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, but I try ignoring that voice.

Around 2019, maybe? It's not a new word, but it's definitely gained popularity online these past couple years as an insult.

It's getting to the point where "simp" is going the way of Nazi, cuck, SJW and incel, as just another insult tossed around the internet to mean person who disagrees with me about something.

So, let me get this straight:

  • Simp:
    • Formerly: one who desperately idolizes or over-invests in someone for their affection
    • Currently: one who says anything remotely positive about a woman
  • Nazi:
    • Formerly: National Socialist; one who believes that ethnic minorities (particularly Jews) must be rounded up and exterminated in order to secure a future for the white race
    • Currently: one whose political views are different from the speaker's own
  • Cuck:
    • Formerly: Cuckold; one whose romantic partner has sexual relations with other individuals
    • Currently: one who believes that women and minorities are deserving of human rights
  • SJW:
    • Formerly: Social Justice Warrior; one who desires to make things better for people who have historically or currently been discriminated against by society
    • Currently: one who wishes to censor anime tiddies from Japanese games, and to shoehorn LGBT characters and ethnic minorities into Disney movies, Cartoon Network shows, Mr. Potato Head toys, and Dr. Seuss books
  • Incel:
    • Formerly: Involuntary Celibate; one who desires a sexual relationship, but is unable to find a willing partner
    • Currently: a misogynist who blames women for their inability to get laid

Does that sound about right?
