Hey all,

Life has been keeping me incredibly busy for the last several weeks! Ninfora was birthed during what has been perhaps the busiest point in my life, and as I've discussed casually on the forums, I'm hoping to have quite a bit more free time coming up. I would like to dedicate a lot of my free time to continuing to improve Ninfora. I want to make this site as enjoyable as possible to use.

Time, however, is a finite resource. I've created a short poll that can help me gauge what's important to focus on. Effort that's put into area is effort that's not put into another. I want to see you guys are happy with, and what you think needs to be improved. Determining what you are least satisfied with will allow me to prioritize what's important.

Feel free to submit feedback here as well. I'm hoping to make it easier to submit and discuss suggestions in general. The "mega-thread" presently pinned to the top of this board has been immensely useful, but there's also a lot of noise that makes it difficult to pinpoint which suggestions should take precedence.

Thanks for your time! Your responses will shape the path that Ninfora will take in the coming weeks/months. :)

While I'm not dissatisfied in any regard (with themes and loadtimes being as good as I can ask for, and mobile being a non-issue), I wanted to give some additional insight into a few of the polling questions.

1. How satisfied are you with the selection of boards on Ninfora?

I do think the four-board index looks a little barren skimpy, but at the same time, I can't give good suggestions for additional boards that wouldn't be niche to the point of under-utilization.

I think depending on how the Pokemon sub-board goes, there might be room for 2-3 sub boards for big franchises and/or seasonal boards for big upcoming releases.

2. How satisfied are you with the additional (non-forum) features on Ninfora?

I honestly can't say I've used many of these features. Twitch showcasing is the only one off the top of my head and I'm not even sure how or if it fully works.

That said, there are no missing features I'm truly sorely lacking, save the ability to personally alter name colors which I know is being looked into.

3. How satisfied are you with the (laid-back/hands-off) moderation style of Ninfora?

Some of the more heated discussions have made me wonder if the moderators should step in a little bit more just to try and keep the peace. But at the same time, the freedom to discuss virtually anything- up to and including debating if pornographic images and discussions should be allowed- is nice in that this community is treating its members as adults. Or at least overgrown children.

I've wondered about the progress on the staff applications, but at the same time I realize with as passive as the need for moderators seems to be, there's little pressure for adding staff for the sake of moderating: more that anyone with particular technical skill that can better the website in form- or functional- way.

The Pokémon board is a nice little "experiment" right now, and we're keeping an eye on long-term activity there. It will be interesting to see if the activity persists, or if it dwindles considerably in a few months time. If it keeps attracting discussion, then there's probably room for a couple of other franchises too.

One other idea that's been discussed a few times is a "seasonal" Nintendo board, where threads that otherwise overwhelm a board in a shrot timeframe could be posted. The Switch would be an example candidate for such treatment, but since we're unlikely to get any other big news on the console until early next year it would likely not get enough attention to warrant its own board.

Removing overall niche boards seems to be having the intended effect, at least. It's a lot easier to participate in various topics with so many of them condensed into one area. Will be interesting to see how it continues to play out in the future.

Making user color changes configurable without needing to ping an admin is currently rather high up on my to-do list. Adding this feature will likely be what I next focus my efforts on, unless the feedback here encourages me to look into something more urgent.

It is still a strange feeling to see some such discussions so liberally discussed, but I really enjoy reading everyone's viewpoints. Posting actual pornographic material is one of those few things that isn't currently allowed, and it's unlikely that this will change, but people are free to discuss the subject.

Things in general did feel a bit rowdy a couple weeks back as everyone adjusted to the lax moderation, but in general everyone seems to be well-behaved enough. We've only had to remove a small handful of posts, and that was because they were blatant harassment that served no purpose but to attack users.

We have only had to deal with four reports total thus far, and one of those reports was just asking us to remove an accidental double-post. :P

If anyone here ever feels that a post is inappropriate for the site, though, please do report it! If you're not sure whether or not you should report a post, report it anyways. The worst thing that could happen is that we could discuss it and decide not to intervene. We would rather receive a report and decide not to act than to not receive a report and overlook something.

1. I like that we're taking an as-justified approach with the number of boards, since it prevents the forum from overextending itself and becoming barren as a result. I would personally like to see Zelda and Fan-Fiction boards, but am content for now, since the former will likely become justified upon release of Breath of the Wild, while the latter will become handy whenever there are enough writers in the user base. In the meantime, I'm sure Power On will suffice.

2. I said I was satisfied, but would like some clarification on what you mean by, "non-forum features".

3. Not much to say, here. We behave, you get to kick back and/or focus on technical stuff. It's a nice relationship, and I really appreciate it. ;)

4. I currently use IPS4 Light, it being a bright skin that demonstrates feature set parity with the default Blackout. I really like it, but given the Nintendo theme, it would be nice to see another bright skin featuring Nintendo's signature reds, particularly in the borders. The white space in posts and other content could remain as-is.

5. This is easily the fastest and most stable forum I've ever been to, so long as you're not using Adblock--not that anyone needs it because you're actually smart and opt not to have ads in the first place. uBlock doesn't cause any issues, so that's cool. For the record, I wouldn't mind a static banner ad here and there if it alleviated some of the financial burden associated with server upkeep, but otherwise? Keep it up; it's fucking awesome! :D

6. I know some people have been complaining about oddities on mobile, particularly with regards to quoting. I haven't had these issues myself, so I can't comment on them. That aside, I will state that, overall, this is exactly what mobile browsing should be: just as functional as the desktop variant, but minimized. No unnecessary rearrangements, and no missing buttons. No other site that I know of except for the Anime News Network approaches mobile like this--and Ninfora is a lot prettier, to be frank. This should be the standard. I love it to pieces; please don't fuck with it unless you're trying to fix the aforementioned quoting issues. :P

Thanks for everything! :D

1:  The number of boards is fine. it covers everything a video game forum should be about instead of adding so many different boards no one even goes to but Power on or some Off topic place.

2:  Satisfied, the number of boards work pretty well

3: I guess pretty Satisfied, doesn't feel like a prison or a place where the mods only talk to you just to slap a warning or a ban then proceed with ignoring you forever.

4: Satisfied but also not quite THAT satisfied, I guess I sound picky but sooner or later more themes should be ether added or some sort of experimental skin everyone can use. Currently dark skin is nice but I am wondering how far it can go to at least go minimalist so I see more of the posts and content and less lines and slightly different grey/black everywhere. Something like that would work for mobile maybe even optimize the forum even further if done correctly.

5:  Very Satisfied, loads so fast compared to NS2 and many other sites that fail to optimize at all.

6: Dissatisfied because it needs to be tweaked more for phones such as removing the Ninfora logo or making a mini-mobile version, have the boards and posts squeezed together a bit more, or maybe some mobile skin that just downsizes a lot of elements that take up too much space on the screen in general.

On the one hand I like how discussion is focused on the four boards, but I agree it does feel empty. Though the only board idea that came to my mind was an events board but I think it would be under utilized.

I'd like to see a bit more character added to the overall look of the forum. Other then that, I'm very satisfied.

I hear ya loud and clear. Been talking with @Chrom and the theme is very much something that can be improved upon.

Personally, I'd love to maintain two themes: A dark one and a light one. Beyond a couple of themes it becomes much more difficult to maintain, especially with such a limited staff body.

I would like to see a logo with more "personality" as well. What I'd really love is to have an SVG logo that's both smaller in file size and also looks sharp regardless of the device that's viewing it.

Improving the look and feel of the site seems likely to be a high priority after custom name colors have been sorted. We'll keep watching the feedback and decide where to go from that. CCH is likely to continue tweaking things meanwhile as well.

A different theme aside from the default dark and original IPS4 would be nice. Not something like NS2 had, but something custom-made.

Pictures of Mario and friends would really be awesome at the top of the page would really be wonderful to have, and it just screams "hey, we're a Nintendo board, come join us" vibe, but that's just me. Aside from that, I really love how Ninfora managed to hang on so well despite the rocky debut. (Thanks CrowdGather.)

I kind of liked having more boards to spread out on in the past but as it is now the boards have been working well. General Nintendo has had a surge of activity after the Switch trailer but there isn't really any logical way to break it up right now. A Zelda board for Breath of the Wild is the only upcoming seasonal board I can imagine needing in a few months.

For the forum themes/skins I'd say just maintain a good light theme and I'll be happy. I know it's less popular than the dark but I've never liked dark themes and there were times on NS2 where the light theme was pretty much completely overlooked.

1. For practical purposes, I understand the board selection, but I'm personally dissatisfied. As Chrom knows, I'd be down for a Writing board (or even a consolidated Art/Media board for writers, artists, video makers, reviewers, etc.), since I like writing and reading (I didn't do much of it the last two years of NS2 because of my life getting busy and problems with the community I had at the time). I also would appreciate the franchise boards returning. I understand the desire to keep all the discussion in one place, but if I'm not interested in discussing Pokémon or Mario, I'm just going to pass over any threads discussing it under General Nintendo. It's still the same effect at the end of the day these threads getting their own board. I would start out with the three most popular Nintendo franchises first (Pokémon, Mario, Zelda) and then add to it from there if user activity grows or interest in other franchises grow.

2. I'm satisfied, though as long as I can post, I really don't care what else is there.

3. The moderation is just fine for me, from what I've seen so far.

4. Ninfora is inoffensive-looking, but bland at the same time. Just an observation, even though I understand that this place is brand-new and I remember what NS2 looked like on day one (very barebones).

5. Everything's fine in this regard, though I sometimes encounter a weird glitch on some pages where the first post keeps extending with empty space, causing the screen to slowly scroll. It could just be the computer I'm using and not the site's fault.

6. Satisfied with the mobile site so far.

Wow, I didn't even notice this thread before.

Other than that, not to repeat or step on else toes at nauseaum (sp) of what they said here I'm satisfied with site overall.

I like FE quite a lot, but Chrom's ravid fandom makes me a bit queezy.
Best give him his own little corner to go wild.

@Chrom. :P

Fire Emblem board is a pretty common request, and it's an especially popular series here so it probably could warrant its own board. The General Nintendo forum doesn't seem to be flooded by FE discussions right now, but there's certainly a healthy number of threads across various pages.

Might be worth seeing how much activity a board would be able to sustain on its own. Could always recycle everything back to General Nintendo if it only gets sparsely used.

If Chrom's open to the idea of a Fire Emblem board as well, then he can quickly set it up and care for it. I'd love to get into FE at some point myself, but I otherwise know so little of the series that I'll let him handle it from here, since he definitely knows the community better.

Non-forum features would be things such as Discord and the Twitch streamer block on the feed page. I'm hoping to have other features on the site, but there are other, more pressing priorities at the moment.

Ah, I figure that's what you meant but though I know the importance and I use a third of those non-forum features, (Discord) that question had me confused. That makes if I don't use all the non-forum features.

I can only speak on the Discord front. It is handy to have the link to our Discord server for sure so I assume it's the same with FB and Twitter as well. And it's understandable that there's more pressing issue to focus on for sure when you have the time to tackle that. As is the non forum features are great as is. I'm curious to what else is in store besides the stream alerts.

I do believe we should have a fan-creations board for fanfics, creative writing, fan art, etc.

Second-and-thirded on the writing/fanworks board. And I say that franchise boards only make sense, as it's essentially the exact same thing as now except more compartmentalized. I am no more likely to enter a thread on a franchise I'm not into if it's right in my face than I am if it's sequestered in a different board.

I think we ought to wait and see how successful NaNoWriMo is before committing to a creativity board

nanowrimo is completely unrelated to anything else

its its own entity and shouldn't have any bearing on whether or not a creative board gets created

what would you be judging on? whether the writers finish? should we post every day in the thread to let you know we're still truckin'? how much progress is necessary for it to be considered a 'win' for the creative people, some of whom are not even writers to begin with?
