Mario Kart Racing Association - 2020 Season

Recommended Posts

The effect of home track advantage has really been something in the MKRA.  5 of the 6 events so far have been won by home racers, and the 6th, at Wumpa Island, saw Crash Bandicoot finish in 3rd.  The effect, of anything is getting even stronger as King Dedede went 1-3 in Popstar this weekend, right after Amy Rose and Sonic went 1-2 at Casino Night Zone the week previous.

It has really been great for the fans in attendance to see this play out, but has to be slightly unnerving for teams who haven’t gotten their shot on their home tracks yet.  Will this phenomenon continue all season, or will other teams be able to break the trend at some point?  Whoever is able to score big points consistently away from home is likely to finish very high in the standings at season’s end you have to figure.

edit: with Link and I having done three events each to this point, it would seem that the person at the controls is having no bearing on this trend so far.

Star Continent Grand Prix - Moleville/Rose Town Circuit

10:30pm - formation lap is on.  Lots of characters from Mushroom World on row 1 and 2 here, and the all-around drivers did the best in qualifying.  Mario, Luigi, Rosalina, and Yoshi are on row 1, while Daisy, Bowser, Toad, and Booster are on row 2.  Valentina, Peach, Captain Falcon, and Megaman are on row 3 for the start of this race.

DNF - Fox, Kirby, Zero, King Dedede, Pikachu, Koopa Troopa, Coco Bandicoot, Toadette, Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Fuzzer, Baby Mario, Chrom

Lap 1 - It's lights out and away they go.  The early turns into the coal mines result in a crash as Kirby, Fox, and Zero all get caught up in a wreck on turn 3.  Safety car is out.

Lap 4 - We're back on to green flag racing and Mario is in the lead from Luigi, then Yoshi.  Rosalina and Bowser are 4th and 5th as of now, followed by the Star Continent tandem of Booster and Valentina.

Lap 6 - As has so often been the case, the road through the Forest Maze and Rose Town has been dampened by recent rainfall, yet it isn't raining currently.  This is forcing teams to make a strategic decision with tires, do they go for hard tires and go for speed in the final sector straightaway past the Pipe Vault but risk spinning out in the maze...or do they go soft tires and play it safe but lose speed in the final sector?  Most teams have gone with hard tires to start the race, but radar shows more rain coming.  This could be the first race this season where weather plays a significant factor.

Lap 10 - King Dedede spins out and hits a tree.  His night is over.

Lap 12 - Mario and Luigi being in the front has really made it a daunting task for the other teams.  They are working well together and are actually exchanging the lead at certain points, allowing the other partner to draft behind in 2nd place, just like a pair of cyclists or runners in front of the pack.

Lap 15 - As if the humidity and wetness wasn't enough to contend with, we're starting to see fog develop in the Forest Maze part of the course.  This is turning into a monster.

Lap 17 - Whoa...big crash in the mines.  Pikachu took a terrible line into turn 3 and pays the price as he hits the wall, and then Koopa Troopa and Coco Bandicoot both were unable to evade in time.  Ouch.  Safety car is out and with it being so close to the first pit stop, pretty much all teams decide to hit the pit lane early.  Mario and Luigi make it out 1st and 2nd with Yoshi 3rd, the home team is 4th and 5th still.

Lap 21 - Toadette and Kazooie land too close to one another in the landing zone of the jump from Moleville to Forest Maze.  They both end up with punctured tires, and in the mucky course through the maze that's pretty much death.  They get stuck.  Their night is over.

Lap 24 - A failed electrical unit fells Crash Bandicoot.  Bad night for team BHP Bandicoot, as neither makes it to the finish.

Lap 27 - Yoshi falls victim to a double pass thanks to Valentina and Booster.  The home-track advantage has been incredible so far this MKRA season and it appears that is playing out again tonight.  But can the star-crossed lovers manage to get ahead of the Bros?

Lap 30 - On the halfway mark of the race it's a bad break for Fuzzer as his power unit shorts out.  He comes to a stop just past turn 9 in Rose Town.  A massive roar comes from the crowd as he's forced to abandon.  Fuzzer is widely beloved in the Nintendo Universe, but count this as one place that doesn't share his fandom.

Lap 32 - The fog is now spreading into the Moleville section of the track, in particular near the bottom of the mountain near the start/finish line.  We thought that rain would be the main issue tonight but the fog has become more problematic.  Baby Mario totally misses turn 15 and hits the barrier off to the left of the start/finish line.  He's out.

Lap 34 - Now Chrom misses the same exact corner in turn 15.  He crashes in almost the exact same location.  The safety car is now coming out.  It looks like the MKRA is setting up light beacons on some of the corners now to assist the drivers in the poor visibility.

Lap 36 - The race is back to green flag.  Booster and Valentina take a bit of a risk going for the early pit stop on Lap 35, as do DK and Diddy Kong.  They drop down to 19th and 20th and 25th and 26th for the time being, but they'll almost certainly go up to 1st through 4th on Lap 40 after everyone else pits due to the speed difference during the stops.  However, the fuel tank usually only lasts about 25 laps, and there are uphills and jumps on this circuit.  Will they have enough fuel to get to the end?

Lap 40 - And now the rest of the teams come in for the pit stop.  Team Corona Islander gets Yoshi a great change and he gets out before Mario and Luigi.  Bowser and Daisy, like Yoshi are the only drivers remaining for their teams and they also change quickly and get out before the Bros.  Team Amazon, who was 1-2 all race until a few laps ago are now sitting 8th and 9th!  That's not what they bargained for, that's for sure.

Lap 44 - And now the rain is starting to fall.  Most teams went to the soft tires in the 2nd pit stop, except notably for Ryota and Akari Hayami.  Maybe they are confident in their driving ability on the wet surface.

Lap 46 - On the bright side, the visibility is starting to improve with the rain falling.  The crowd isn't going anywhere though, with Booster holding the lead and Valentina in 2nd, they are looking at a possible home 1-2, which would be yet another success by home drivers.

Lap 49 - Donkey Kong is driving like an absolute mad ape.  He barrels through the mines, nearly hitting Valentina in turn 4, who elects to yield instead of defend and possibly crash.  Booster now has company.

Lap 52 - Bowser moves up into 5th place.  It seems the heavyweight drivers are taking some risks despite the slippery conditions, and the long straightaway past Pipe Vault and the downhill jump into Forest Maze are giving them opportunities.

Lap 54 - Ryota and Akari have moved up to 10th and 11th.  They are in line for decent points now, and it might get better as they are gliding very well on the wet track.

Lap 56 - Donkey Kong and Booster are giving everything near the front.  DK has tried to pass about four times now but Booster has defended every time.  This latest attempt was around turn 10 in Rose Town, and both nearly avoided crashing.  This is intense!

Lap 57 - Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Daisy, and Luigi are all trying to catch up with the heavyweights and home drivers up ahead, but it looks like they are too far behind due to the other group stopping earlier on the safety car.  But will they have enough fuel to finish?  Booster is starting to doubt that he will.  He pushes much less on lap 57 and as a result DK takes the lead.

Lap 60 - Double drama on the final lap!  First Mario and Daisy get too close going through the tight turns of the mines and end up colliding on turn 3.  They won't make it to the finish!  Absolute madness from two of the top drivers!  And then, Donkey Kong begins to slow down on the final straightaway as it looks like his fuel is gone...it looks like Booster will pass him but there's a cannon on the straightaway, and with that, DK gets the boost he needs back into the Moleville landing zone, and at the line, DK is able to block off Booster with his slowing kart enough to hit the line first for the win.  Booster and Valentina round out the podium in 2nd and 3rd.

Results:

1.Donkey Kong - 25 pts

2.Booster - 20 pts

3.Valentina - 18 pts

4.Diddy Kong - 15 pts

5.Bowser - 12 pts

Yeah, the Star Continent folks see me as Public Enemy #1 these days. Me losing made them feel like they beaten their proverbial demon.

And Daisy didn't score a point either so double yay for the SC fans.

Well, thanks to some reorganization by Link this offseason in the NAFA and the Moleville Miners suffering relegation in the NBL, this is the only trip you’ll have to make there for a while.  Probably for the best.
