Birabuto Kingdom Grand Prix

Dry Dry Desert, Birabuto Kingdom, Sarasaland

9:30 pm: Driver intros are finishing up and getting perhaps the loudest cheers from the Sarasaland crowd are the local duo of Fuzzer and Daisy, especially for the latter for winning the MKRA championship last season.

9:45 pm: Pre race ceremonies are held before the race. Prior to the Sarasaland national anthem a moment of silence was held for recently deceased FIA F1 Race Director Charlie Whiting who died earlier today in Australia for the Australian Grand Prix. Following the anthem, the drivers get into their vehicles.

9:55 pm: Engines have fired and the formation lap has begun.

While the karts are doing their lap, here is the starting grid for tonight's Birabuto Kingdom Grand Prix:

Row 1 - Fuzzer, Daisy, Mario, Luigi

Row 2 - Fox, Krystal, Peach, Rosalina

Row 3 - Captain Falcon, Jody Summer, Toad, Toadette

Row 4 - Triforcemaster, Zelda, Yoshi, Birdo

Row 5 - Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong

Row 6 - Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Banjo, Kazooie

Row 7 - Pit, Palutena, Kirby, King Dedede

Row 8 - Louie, Olimar, Sonic, Amy Rose

Row 9 - Wolf, Dash, Megaman, Zero

Row 10 - Pikachu, Pichu, Akari Hayami, Ryota Hayami

DNF: Kirby, Olimar, Louie, Sonic, Amy, Dedede, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Fox, Toad, Toadette,

Lap 1: The 40 kart field lines up at the starting line to begin the race and the 2019 MKRA season. Lakitu comes to the start holding the starting lights, which begins the countdown. Lights are green and it's time to bring the action. A great start for all drivers as they complete the first lap of 2019 with no issues.

Lap 5: Daisy gets by Fuzzer for the lead to the delight of the home crowd. Meanwhile, the newly prompted teams are doing a great job moving through the pack early. Helping things out is a 5 car pileup involving Kirby, Louie, Olimar, Sonic and Amy after King Dedede intentionally tapped his own teammate for reasons unknown, sending the lightweight into the path of the others.

Lap 7: Race control wastes no time black flagging Dedede for the intentional wreck on his teammate, though he says on team radio that it was a mistake, the replay angles race control had showed otherwise. He's down a lap as a result of this.

Lap 10: On the restart, Luigi makes a daring move into the first turn, going four wide past Mario, Fuzzer and Daisy into the lead. It only leads him into the slower dirt though and he loses the lead moments later. Oops.

Lap 13: Dedede thought he could cut through the middle of the quicksand pit by gunning his kart at max speed and ends up getting swallowed in the middle, needing to be rescued by Lakitu and ending his race. He's not happy with his own stupidity, though he does make amends with Kirby in the team garage thankfully for his wreck earlier.

Lap 15: Fox and Krystal have found themselves behind Fuzzer and Daisy and the two foxes are threatening to take the lead with 5 laps until the first pit stops.

Lap 20: First round of pit stops are done and everyone but Akari and Ryota Hayami came down pit road as the two Japanese drivers want to lead a few laps and maybe pit when the next yellow waves. Hope it pays off.

Lap 23: And pay off, it does. Bowser and Donkey Kong wreck each other and take each other out. The Hayami siblings can go down pit road and do their service without the tanks tunning dry.

Lap 25: Fox gets a good jump at the restart and takes the lead from Daisy. Krystal follows through and takes second place too.

Lap 29: Elsewhere in the field, Jody Summer and Rosalina have found themselves trading 5th and 6th place so often, they don't notice Peach make a daring three wide pass to get by both of them for 5th.

Lap 30: Not much to report right now but Bowser and DK aren't happy with each other given the wreck earlier as the two giants got into a crazy brawl in the garage area trading blows at each other with their respective teams trying to get the two separated, though given the sizes of Bowser and DK, that's easier said than done.

Lap 35: You know, when Peppy tells Fox to do a Barrell roll, something tells me getting into a huge rollover following a blown tire in a banked corner is NOT what the hare meant. Sadly, he's done.

Lap 40: Second round of pits stops have ended and Delta Sarasaland stay 1-2 as a result. No one made any crazy strategies this time.

Lap 45: Krystal and Daisy have exchanged the lead several times since the pit stop and it seems the two women could be 1-2 when it's done. But with 15 laps left, anything could happen.

Lap 50: Toad and Toadette both have an unfortunate crash and are done.

Lap 55: 5 laps left and Krystal leads Daisy, but not by much. This looks to be a fun battle to the last lap.

Lap 59: Getting close to the final lap and it's still Daisy and Krystal but Fuzzer and Mario might have something to say about it if the two leaders do something crazy.

Lap 60: With so many lead changes on the final lap, it was clear that Daisy and Krystal would be fighting for the win at the line but this inadvertently allowed others to get in the battle and in a shocker no one saw coming, Fuzzer makes an easy three wide pass on the final stretch around Daisy and Krystal who do finish on the podium though.

Results to come shortly.

Final results:

1. Fuzzer - 25 pts

2. Daisy- 20 pts

3. Krystal - 18 pts

4. Mario - 15 pts

5. Jody Summer - 12 pts

Whoa...the Hayamis are going for the fuel gamble in the opening race?  Talk about going for the jugular.  Hey...it sucks starting on row 10 but I'm not sure about this move.

Sounds as though team Krogefour had a difficult time in their first race together.  Maybe they will figure it out soon enough.

DK and Bowser wrecked into one another?  I can see the Brawl in the garage coming.

edit: yep

Toad and Toadette crashing into one another?  Damn...now that’s something you don’t see every day.  Bad start for Friday’s Fun Guys.

Same as it ever was, 1-2 finish for Delta Sarasaland...not surprising given they were racing at home tonight.  Amazing that Daisy is nipped to the line in Birabuto 2 years in a row

Row 3 - Mario, Wolf, Ryota Hayami, Rosalina

Row 4 - Triforcemaster, Sonic, Yoshi, Birdo

Row 5 - Krystal, Olimar, Captain Falcon, Luigi

Row 6 - Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Daisy, Kazooie

Row 8 - Louie, Koopa Troopa, Zelda, Amy Rose

Row 9 - Jody Summer, Kirby, Peach, Zero

Row 10 - Pikachu, Pichu, Akari Hayami, Toad

DNF - Megaman, Louie, Miles Edgeworth, Olimar, Toadette, Zero, Birdo, Pichu

10:05pm - The drivers are out on the circuit for the formation lap.  We don't encounter winter weather very much on the MKRA Circuit, but tonight in the high altitude mountains of the DK Isles, is a noteworthy exception.  A cannon shoots the racers up to the snow-capped peaks where they wind through switchback turns and finish through a halfpipe meticuluously groomed with light and deep snow in spots.  In qualifying most of the heavier racers used gravity to their advantage, but avoiding the deep snow when you're the only driver out there is easy...in a GP, maybe not.

Lap 1 - Lakitu on the track, the light is green and its time to bring the action.  There is banging going into the cannon and in the landing zone atop the mountain on lap 1, leading to a safety car.  Several cars including Daisy and Luigi end up going to the pit lane, while Megaman and Louie's karts are too damaged to continue.

Lap 4 - On the restart, Banjo takes the lead from Fuzzer, and the 2 Kongs are right behind with Bowser and Dedede in 5th and 6th.

Lap 5 - Captain Falcon tries blasting through the moguls and lands hard atop one of them...he has to pit to repair damage to his chassis.

Lap 7 - Miles Edgeworth takes a bad angle out of turn 4 and ends up going off the booster right off the side of the track.  He's out.

Lap 16 - A relatively boring phase of the race concludes as Olimar gets stuck in heavy snow in the halfpipe, and once he gets out, Toadette comes tearing across from the right and basically T-bones him.  Ouch.  That's it for both of them.

Lap 18 - Zero does basically the same error as Captain Falcon earlier only worse, as he hits a mogul wrong, then a second one even worse, before doing a kart faceplant right into a third.  His engine is damaged and his night is over.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits and Team Dole Banana and Team Coors Koopa do the best in the pits, and the Kongs are 2-3 behind Banjo, with Bowser in 4th.

Lap 27 - The snowy track is starting to benefit Akari and Ryota Hayami, who are moving up the field rather quickly now.  They are taking the jumps expertly and winding through the halfpipe in a very efficient fashion.

Lap 30 - The heavier drivers continue to do well, but they aren't infallible.  Bowser takes a bad line through the moguls and sustains damage...he has to hit the pit

Lap 34 - Big crash up near the front!  Diddy Kong gets tangled up with Birdo, who took a bad line through heavy snow, and sandwiched between them is Fuzzer, who is unable to get out of the way and sustains damage.  He heads to the pit to repair his chassis and front right tire, Diddy pits as well while Birdo is too damaged to continue.

Lap 40 - 2nd time through pit lane, and there's no real drama.  Bowser, Donkey Kong, Dedede, and Rosalina are the top 4 at the moment, with the Hayami twins right behind.

Lap 43 - Promotion was a victory for Pikachu and Pichu, but they look miserable out there tonight.  Lightweights are struggling across the board in general, but Pichu's night is over after his power unit short circuits.  Predictably, the mouse throws a temper tantrum.

Lap 47 - Pit and Wolf come together coming into turn 6 just past the halfpipe.  Those two have to pit to repair the damage

Lap 50 - Donkey Kong emits a roar from the crowd as he passes Bowser and takes the lead.  This would be a big win on home soil if it holds up.

Lap 60 - DK pulled away after his pass and with all the carnage earlier, teams and kart drivers started taking less chances in the final 10 laps, which led to some surprisingly boring racing.  In the end, Donkey Kong takes the checkered flag, with Koopa Troopa taking second and Rosalina picking off Dedede on turn 4 on the final lap to move into the bronze medal position.

Results for Kongo Jungle grand prix:

1.Donkey Kong - 25 pts

2.Koopa Troopa - 20 pts

3.Rosalina - 18 pts

4.Dedede - 15 pts

5.Ryota Hayami - 12 pts

6.Akari Hayami - 10 pts

7.Banjo - 9 pts

8.Yoshi - 8 pts

9.Wolf - 7 pts

10.Mario - 6 pts

11.Palutena - 5 pts

Pole position tonight. Let's do this.

Not a good start for Daisy. At least I'm near the front.

Gruesome wrecks. At least we're still in it.

As long as I can salvage something from tonight, I'll take it.

Tonight is the beginning of a 3 races in 8 days stretch in the MKRA...we've got the Casino Night Zone Grand Prix at Roulette Road coming up in a few minutes.  That is followed by the Mushroom City Grand Prix this Sunday, and then the Popstar Grand Prix next Wednesday.

Qualifying Results for Casino Night Zone Grand Prix @ Roulette Road

Row 1 - Triforcemaster, Sonic, Yoshi, Birdo

Row 2 - Fuzzer, Banjo, Toad, Diddy Kong

Row 3 - Jody Summer, Bowser, Daisy, Amy Rose

Row 4 - Mario, Wolf, Peach, Rosalina

Row 5 - Krystal, Olimar, Captain Falcon, Luigi

Row 6 - Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Pit, Kazooie

Row 7 - Toadette, Megaman, Dash, Fox

Row 8 - Louie, Koopa Troopa, Zelda, King Dedede

Row 9 - Palutena, Kirby, Ryota Hayami, Zero

Row 10 - Pikachu, Pichu, Akari Hayami, Donkey Kong

10:05pm - The racers are on the track for the formation lap

DNF - Wolf, Koopa Troopa, King Dedede, Bowser, Rosalina, Phoenix Wright, Olimar, Ryota Hayami, Dash Bowman, Zelda, Fox, Amy Rose

Lap 1 - Lakitu's light is green and it's time to bring the action!  And there's some very conservative racing early on, with most racers going single file through the tight turns.  Triforcemaster had an unlikely pole in qualifying and he is in the lead to start here.  No mayhem on lap 1.

Lap 3 - Wolf Odonnell loses control on the roulette wheel turn and wrecks into the outer wall.  He's out.

Lap 7 - This track is very tight and narrow, and it's leading to some rather slow yet agile type racing.  In contrast to last week at DK Summit where the force of gravity gave the heavyweight drivers a big advantage, tonight its the lightweight drivers who get the edge.  Sonic, Yoshi, Birdo, Toad, Diddy, Fuzzer, and Amy Rose follow Tm3 at the moment.

Lap 10 - Koopa Troopa, who wore silver at the last race, attempts to overtake Toadette on the heartline, and he gets his angle all wrong.  He slams into the rail hard, and the damage is too much to continue.

Lap 12 - King Dedede is unable to navigate the split in front of the slot machine wheel and crashes.  He's out.

Lap 16 - Pikachu and Pichu have had an awful start to the season, but in the cramped quarters of this track, the lightweight mice are weaving their way up through the field from Row 10.  Meanwhile Bowser has an issue with his power unit, and his night is over.  Bad night for team Coors Koopa.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits...team Chevrolet Top Driver is the quickest through the pits, boosting Jody Summer and Captain Falcon into the top 5.  Triforcemaster is still in the lead by team Delta Sarasaland gets a quick change, putting Fuzzer into 2nd.  Its human v human at the front.

Lap 23 - Fuzzer gets inside possession on Tm3 on the roulette wheel turn and takes over the lead.

Lap 25 - Tm3 gets a great boost out of the roulette wheel turn and passes Fuzzer on the roulette board straightaway.  It's a duel.

Lap 27 - Fuzzer retakes the lead, daring to hop over Tm3 on the big downhill just after the start/finish.  This might honestly come down to whether a team of two can get up to the human pairing, or if either Zelda or Daisy can get themselves in position to aid their partner.  Right now Fuzzer and Tm3 are battling, but doing so in a way that they aren't falling back toward the field.

Lap 30 - Oh man...right on the halfway mark of the race there's a major crash.  It happens at the Y intersection where the blue and red road splits come back together before the start/finish.  Rosalina comes from the red road, Phoenix Wright from the blue, and the two smack into each other, and behind them, Olimar, Ryota Hayami, and Dash Bowman all are unable to evade the damaged cars, sending debris everywhere.  All 5 are done for the night and the safety car is out.

Lap 33 - It's back to green flag racing and Tm3 and Fuzzer continue to battle up front.  Toad, Sonic, Captain Falcon, Yoshi, Diddy Kong, and Jody Summer are the next 6.  Pikachu is up to 10th and Pichu up to 11th, remarkable given that they started on Row 10!

Lap 36 - Disaster for Jody Summer, who gets a puncture to the right front tire.  She slows way down and has to pit, falling back through the field.

Lap 38 - It hasn't been Zelda's night, and she ends up with a transmission problem.  Unable to shift gears properly and far back in the field, Zelda elects to abandon the race.  She goes to the garage and gets on the team radio...clearly her mission is to help Tm3 from trackside now.

Lap 40 - 2nd time into the pits...this time its team CVS Fox that has the best change, and Fox and Krystal move up into the top 7.  Toad and Toadette also get a good change and have moved into the top 5.  Tm3 takes back over the lead as team Sherwin is able to benefit from Zelda retiring and get Tm3 out quickly, while team Delta has to attend to both Fuzzer and Daisy...Fuzzer still 2nd though.

Lap 43 - Pikachu attempts to pass Fox on the roulette wheel turn, but Fox cuts him off and ends up putting the mouse into the inner wall.  Pikachu has to pit to repair damage.  Race control is now looking at this incident.

Lap 46 - Kirby is now making a big move up through the field, he's now in 10th place, having started on row 9.  Pichu is into 8th place now, having started on row 10.  Sometimes its not always about how you start...

Lap 48 - Tm3 continues to lead.  Fuzzer is right on his tail.  All sorts of lightweight drivers are right behind them, but agile as they are, Sonic, Yoshi, Kirby, Pichu, Amy, etc cannot seem to muster the speed necessary to catch up to the two middleweights battling for the lead.  As long as they don't crash, you'd figure Tm3 and Fuzzer will finish 1-2, but who will win the gold?

Lap 49 - Race control finally renders its decision, and black flags Fox for causing a collision against Pikachu.  Fox is furious.  He proceeds to pit lane and proceeds to get out of his kart and abandon the race, tossing his helmet into the crowd.

Lap 51 - Now it's Kazooie that is making a big move up through the field, moving into the top 10.  The heavyweight and middleweight drivers in the field can only watch as they lightweight drivers just maneuver their karts better through the narrow track.

Lap 53 - The top 10 is Fuzzer, Tm3, Yoshi, Captain Falcon, Sonic, Amy Rose, Kazooie, Pichu, Kirby, and Toad as we hit the final 6 laps.  Fuzzer and Tm3 are up about 10 seconds on the rest of the field...the two have actually been racing more as a team since the 2nd pit stop, but at some point its going to be an all-out sprint to the line.

Lap 56 - Oh horrible timing!  Amy Rose notices her brakes failing, and ends up going down the escape road before the start/finish.  Her race is over.  Bad, bad break for her.

Lap 58 - It's on now.  Tm3 passes Fuzzer on the roulette board straightaway, but Fuzzer is faster through the split roads, taking the red road faster than Tm3 takes the blue road, the two nearly colliding at the merge.  2 laps to go!

Lap 60 - On the final lap, Tm3 decides to give Fuzzer a piece of his own medicine, and goes for the hop jump pass on the downhill, and it works.  Fuzzer presses, attempting to pass on both the heartline and the roulette wheel but Tm3 is up to the challenge.  He is then perfect down the blue road and back to the start/finish, taking the checkered flag and gold for his 2nd career win in the MKRA!  Fuzzer finishes in 2nd, while farther back it is a huge battle for 3rd.  In the end, Sonic, Yoshi, and Captain Falcon all take the blue road and are banging through the turn, while Kazooie ends up taking the red road unobstructed and passes all 3 of them to finish in 3rd place for a very unlikely first podium in her 3rd MKRA race!

Results for Casino Night Zone Grand Prix:

1.Triforcemaster - 25 pts

2.Fuzzer - 20 pts

3.Kazooie - 18 pts

4.Sonic - 15 pts

5.Yoshi - 12 pts

5th place starting spot. Not too shabby.

All right TM3. Mano y Mano time. Just the way I like it.

What a shame for those 5 drivers.

12 laps left. Gonna be fun.

Man, Fox is rightfully PISSED after what happened.

Win or lose, this has been a fun battle.

Oh you got me this time TM3. Once we hit Belle Isle in early June, I'll get you.

If it's earlier than that though, that works too.

Still though, second place is great.

Rosalina

DNF: Rosalina, King Dedede, Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Sonic, Daisy, Zelda, Captain Falcon, Jody Summer, Yoshi

10:20 pm: Drivers are beginning their formation lap and two storylines to watch for are that one, we will have a clear track free of vehicular traffic as course officials aren't taking chances after the debacle on Toad's Turnpike last year. Also, a gearbox problem means Rosalina starts dead last tonight which makes the gap between her and Tesco Princess teammate Peach a bit wide for now.

Lap 1: Lakitu is at the line with the lights. They're green and it's time to bring the action and no problems so far as the Mario Bros lead the field into turn 1. An uneventful first lap to report.

Lap 3: And Rosalina not only starts in last place, she sadly finishes there as she loses control and smacks into the retaining wall, sustaining enough damage to the kart to end her race prematurely.

Lap 5: Daisy makes easy work of Toad and Toadette and has her sights on the podium sports early. Her fiance is also doing fine despite starting on the seventh row.

Lap 8: The are underneath the overpass is sure to cause some issues and Bowser decides to go left around the pillar and make a right turn instead of a left turn and "accidentally" rams into King Dedede, sending him into the wall hard, damaging both drivers and leaving the penguin a bit ticked off at what happened as he said on team radio he was quote "minding my own business when that moronic Koopa jerk slammed into me at high speed for no reason," which could lead to some problems between them.

Lap 9: Peach goes past Mario and Luigi on the long straightaway as fans cheer on. Meanwhile Bowser and Dedede get into a heavyweight tussle that the fans are also enjoying for their entertainment tonight that came unexpectedly.

Lap 11: Koopa Troopa and Sonic both fall off the overpass by mistake and end their night as a result. Oops.

Lap 15: Nothing to report right now as we approach the first pit stops of the night. Quite a low number of wrecked drivers right now but that could easily change.

Lap 18: Mario and Luigi are so busy trading second and third place they fail to not only realize Peach was putting a gap on them but that Daisy was closing on them quickly.

Lap 19: One lap until pit stops and... Hey, where's Kazooie? She's not in the race according to the lineup. Must be a scoring error as there are two Rosalina listings in the initial starting grid. Either way, she's not racing right now.

Lap 20: First round of pit stops and Mario manages to take the lead from his beloved and brings Luigi with him. Amazon Plumber is 1-2 right now. Nothing else big to report.

Lap 25: Trying to get past Luigi, Daisy also smacks into the temporary retaining barrier and ends her night as a result.

Lap 26: Good news. Kazooie is in the race thankfully. Whether she gets points or not determines how she does towards the end.

Lap 30: The two American drivers who finished 1-2 last week, TM3 and Fuzzer are planning to work together on the wide streets that should put their driving experiences in Detroit and Cleveland to good use.

Lap 35: Peach gets by Mario to retake the lead as the three have themselves ahead of the pack with 5 laps until the final pit stops.

Lap 40: Second round of pit stops and this time Peach keeps the lead but thanks to good pit stops by their respective crews, TM3 and Fuzzer find themselves getting closer to the podium.

Lap 46: Sadly for Zelda, she suffers a blown engine on the overpass. What a shame.

Lap 50: 10 laps left and we have 5 drivers going for the win with Mario, Luigi, Peach Fuzzer and TM3 separated only by inches. Should be fun.

Lap 55: And we have a wreck with 5 laps as Yoshi, Captain Falcon and Jody Summer collide underneath the overpass. Safety car out. Could go back to green with two laps left.

Lap 58: Back to green and Peach leads the pack into the city but has a hungry pack beating down on her. Pressure is on.

Lap 59: One to go next time by and it's a huge mess. Sure, Peach is leading but even the Mario Bros could easily steal this one.

Lap 60: How about this? Princess Peach does hold off all challengers and leads Mario and Luigi to the line to collect her first win of the season on home soil.

Results to come soon.

King Dedede must have one of the best team radios.  He’s pretty much a boom or bust driver anyway.  Him and Bowser have crossed paths already a few times this season...

Kazooie started on Row 8...that was my bad

Mushroom City is a wide open, paved circuit, very unlike the cramped, narrow Roulette Road.  You have to figure the well funded, Great all around teams will do well tonight.  Zelda and I will do our best nevertheless.

Wow Daisy is out!  That’s a game changer right there...that’ll galvanize the rest of the field.

We are running a bit behind in the race schedule so far.  Here's our gambit to get caught up:

Friday - Popstar Grand Prix @ Air Ride Circuit

Sunday - Yoshi's Island Grand Prix @ Yoshi Circuit

Tuesday - Mute City Grand Prix @ Mute City Circuit

Fuzzer or Xander if either of you want any of these 3 races, speak up...otherwise I'll do my best to take care of them.
