Mario Kart Racing Association - 2020 Season

Well nothing yet so far for Daisy and I.

Oh man. Akari sure has a country on the edge of their seats right now.

Give Ryota credit where it's due on helping his sister out big time at the expense of his fuel load.

I wouldn't be too heartbroken losing to Akari tonight if it means getting a few more points than Daisy.

Man,race control has a lot to sort out now. This will be crazy.

Fifth place and more points than Daisy. Not bad. And not going after Dedede was a good call in the end.

Qualifying results for Hocotate Grand Prix @ Pikmin International Circuit

1 - Captain Falcon, Fox, Ryota Hayami, Olimar

2 - Krystal, Louie, Jody Summer, Pit

3 - Phoenix Wright, Fuzzer, Sonic, Kirby

4 - Megaman, Zero, Pikachu, Kazooie

5 - Wolf, Dash, Triforcemaster, Diddy Kong

6 - Daisy, Amy Rose, Toad, Toadette

7 - King Dedede, Mario, Luigi, Peach

8 - Rosalina, Yoshi, Birdo, Miles Edgeworth

9 - Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong, Banjo

10 - Palutena, Akari Hayami, Zelda, Pichu

DNF - Kazooie, Tm3, Daisy, Toadette, Dedede, Mario, Rosalina, and Miles Edgeworth, Koopa Troopa, Luigi, Banjo

9:40pm - The racers are out for the formation lap.  The Pikmin International Circuit is a futuristic circuit, one of two in a row here on the MKRA calendar, and features a corkscrew and a loopty-loop in the considerably long antigravity section that stretches for over a mile.  Following a section in the forest, the circuit goes through a figure 8 that surrounds statues of several pikmin and then finishes going through a straightaway past a shipyard.  It's a circuit that will benefit the space racers the most based on qualifying.

Lap 1 - And it's green light from Lakitu and its time to bring the action.  And its absolute carnage on the corkscrew!  Kazooie ends up taking a horrendous line and ends up t-boning Tm3, whose kart flips through the air and lands on Daisy...and then Toadette, Dedede, Mario, Rosalina, and Miles Edgeworth are all taken out as collateral damage as they are unable to avoid the flying and tumbing karts in front of them.  Ah the joys and pitfalls of antigravity.  There's so much debris floating in the antigravity that the race is red flagged as the marshals come out to clean up the track.

Lap 4 - After the cleanup and a brief safety car we're back underway.  Things are more stable going through the circuit this time with all getting through.  Falcon leads from Fox, then Olimar in 3rd.

Lap 8 - Fox and Krystal have come together as have Olimar and Louie.  They might be able to race as teams given their strong qualifying performance, and on a circuit with lots of antigravity, this could be a big night for both teams.

Lap 12 - Captain Falcon looks motivated tonight.  He seems very comfortable as well and with the 4 aforementioned racers racing as a team...he's building his lead rather strongly.  It could take some bad driving or a mechanical issue to deny Falcon a victory tonight.

Lap 15 - Koopa Troopa takes an awful line into the corkscrew turn and ends up striking the barrier.  His night is over.

Lap 20 - First time through the pits, and Chevrolet Top Driver does a great job getting Jody Summer out quickly.  She gets out in 2nd place and is now right behind Falcon for the lead.  That's huge.  Also, team BMW Bomber does a great job and gets Megaman and Zero up into the top 8.

Lap 23 - The teams near the front are starting to mix it up a little bit, but it certainly seems like they are more interested in keeping the status quo for now.  There's a huge gap between 8th place Zero and 9th place Fuzzer.  Fuzzer right now is the best of the rest, with Kirby, Pit, and Wright following him.

Lap 26 - It's a transmission failure that dooms Luigi.  He pulls off to the side and is eliminated.  Bad night for team Amazon Plumber.

Lap 29 - Not a good night for team Ford Performance either.  Banjo ends up crashing on the corkscrew that felled Kazooie earlier.  Have to say, a lot of the traditional non-space racers are having a hard time navigating this turn while also flipping upside down simultaneously.  Makes you wonder if the MKRA will make the folks in Hocotate re-design this corner for next season (if its on the calendar).

Lap 33 - If you're a fan of team Chevrolet Top Driver, you couldn't be happier.  Falcon is leading, and Summer is in 2nd holding off the rest of the field.  Fox and Krystal are 3rd and 4th, Olimar and Louie 5th and 6th, and Megaman and Zero 7th and 8th.

Lap 60 - Some MKRA grands prix are super interesting all the way to the end.  This one wasn't.  In fact, there were no lead changes in the top 10 for the whole last half of the race.  Evidently Louie and Olimar weren't able to mix it up with the top 4, but were strong enough to hold off Megaman and Zero to collect some valuable points.  With strong performances by the teams at the bottom in recent weeks, the relegation battle is likely becoming even more interesting.  But make no mistake about it, this night is about the mercenaries of F-Zero.  Captain Falcon led this race wire to wire, a dominating performance that you rarely see in the MKRA, and thanks to a fabulous first pit stop and strong racing, Jody Summer ends up with silver.  Fox McCloud races well for bronze and Krystal finishes fourth in what is a great night for team CVS Fox.

1.Captain Falcon - 25 pts

1. More of Mario Kart. From each game.

2. Put in more of CTR and TSR, with a hint of S&S for those finally coming back. Spotlight them for battle arenas too. Total of 6 from each series.

3. Less of international, but don't get rid of all of it.

4. Still have some of the other tracks that would fit in a Mario Kart setting. Popstar, F-Zero, DKR, the works.

5. Keep to 33 tracks and arenas, perhaps. Maybe switch a few tracks.

My suggestion, so... don't take it as the real article. With our NBL acquiring Crash and Spyro now, there should be an emphasis on the new third-party series here as well. Just ideas, nothing more.

Delta Sarasaland officials were asked about Xander's suggestions for the 2020 MKRA schedule and any possible real world tracks being removed like Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, and others save for Silverstone and Suzuka as nothing truly concrete saying that:

"This list is really comprehensive and puts us in new gaming realms yes, but there are plenty of human tracks that could be dropped before even hosting a race, as is the case of Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca, but it's important to not jump to conclusions that this is the official schedule. It's just an idea and one that should get a good look at too."

Thanks! I knew what CTR was, but had no idea what S&S and TSR were.

Ok thanks for clarifying.  I’ll have to scout out the circuits you’ve identified that I’ve not seen previously and get my impression of them.

I can’t speak for the MKRA as a whole, but Xander’s proposal certainly highlights a group of tracks from the Sony and Sega spheres and while MKRA might balk at putting so many events into those areas, given the new agreements between Nintendo and the game franchises in question, I believe that places like Wumpa Island, Dole Floors, Eggmanland, etc, could well be in line to host grands Prix in 2020.

A lot will probably depend on what teams end up getting relegated and who ends up being promoted from the promotion series this December.  I have to believe that some teams like Crash and Coco Bandicoot, or perhaps teams like Shadow and Knuckles or Aiai and Meemee will try to achieve promotion...I would throw Spyro in there but I’m not sure who he will partner with.

Regarding the international human world tracks, some reduction there is probably likely, with the weaker countries in terms of game sales probably being closest to the chopping block, though again what teams and sponsors are relegated and/or promoted will definitely have an impact.  I would have to think that Japan, England, Canada, and USA would be locks based on Nintendo’s sales in those nations.  After that, it gets trickier.  One probable cut is Germany, as F1 won’t be racing at Hockenheim in 2020.  Again others could depend on the team lineup.  Russia and Brazil as examples, will probably be cut if Louie/Olimar or Pikachu/Pichu get relegated, but probably stay if they stay up. Likewise for France and Mexico, if Kirby/Dedede and Yoshi/Birdo stay up it’d be hard seeing those races cut.

The MKRA 2020 schedule wont be finalized until early January following the

Promotion series

With the Netherlands set to see the games Circuit Park Zandvoort hosting the Dutch Grand Prix next year for the first time since 1985, Heineken has been making noise now about possibly hosting an MKRA race at the brewery's home country stating that quote "it would be logical to have such talented drivers racing in our home country as we are proud of our Dutch heritage and would want to sponsor an MKRA event in the Netherlands as we are also the sponsor of the Dutch Grand Prix when F1 comes to Zandvoort next May."

Also generating the support is Delta's fellow SkyTeam member KLM Airlines, the Dutch airliner and oldest airliner still around (having turned 100 this year) under its original name as well as local F1 Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, the first Dutch F1 driver to have won a F1 race who's success and huge fanbase are why Formula 1 is racing in his home country next year.

You'd think Pikachu winning would be enough for Electrobras Mouse to avoid relegation right?

WRONG!!!

What’s even more amazing is that Pichu has a win this season as well.  Team Electrobras has collected nearly half their points from their victories in Saffron City and Darkwater Beach.

What this does show is that while victories are great, consistency is valued perhaps even more so.

Pikachu/Pichu aren’t buried yet though, 7 events to go, plus they could get a lift in the penultimate week racing on their sponsor’s home turf at Interlagos

Tonight’s Corneria Grand Prix has been postponed due to stormy conditions and high winds of 40-50 mph in and around Corneria City...the high winds are making the antigravity loop in downtown and the antigravity connector over the ocean unsafe, to the point where the karts might be blown off the circuit.  The race has been rescheduled for tomorrow when conditions should be more suitable

Qualifying Results for Grand Prix of Corneria at Corneria City Circuit

1 - Captain Falcon, Fox, Krystal, Zelda

2 - Yoshi, Toad, Jody Summer, Daisy

3 - Peach, Fuzzer, Mario, Wolf

4 - Megaman, Dash, Pikachu, Pichu

5 - Kirby, Zero, Triforcemaster, Luigi

6 - Pit, Amy Rose, Louie, Toadette

7 - King Dedede, Sonic, Diddy Kong, Phoenix Wright

8 - Rosalina, Ryota Hayami, Birdo, Miles Edgeworth

9 - Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong, Banjo

10 - Palutena, Akari Hayami, Olimar, Kazooie

DNF - Akari Hayami, Birdo, Pit, King Dedede, Toadette

9pm - The racers are on the circuit for the formation lap.  Corneria City Circuit is partly a technical street circuit weaving between the skyscrapers of Corneria City, but also contains two antigravity sections, one a loopty-loop in the city center, and the other a loop out over the ocean leading back to Cornerian Army Heaquarters, after which the racers take a 90 degree turn back to the start/finish line.  This is obviously a futuristic track, but all the technical turns through the city make it a fair racing test moreso than other antigravity heavy circuits.

Lap 1 - It's green light from Lakitu and away we go.  And how about this, we have no trouble on lap 1, everybody is through free and clean.  Captain Falcon is the polesitter but he'll have his hands full trying to hold off Fox and Krystal in 2nd and 3rd.  The Cornerian crowd expects a big result tonight and they're making tons of noise.

Lap 4 - Didn't take long...Fox slingshots around Krystal with a DRS and ends up using the momentum to get past Falcon just before the loopty-loop.  The crowd roars as Fox takes the lead.

Lap 8 - In the back, Akari Hayami somehow misjudges the antigravity turn over the ocean and ends up going off the track into the sea.  I guess she wanted to turn this grand prix into a Wave Race event.

Lap 11 - Krystal goes past Falcon into 2nd, passing him on the Army HQ straightaway.  With the two foxes in front early, this could turn into a rout.  You have to wonder if somebody or some team will gamble on fuel at either of the pit stops.

Lap 14 - Birdo crashes on the loopty-loop, her night is done.

Lap 18 - It's the end of the road for Pit, as his braking unit fails going past Cornerian Army HQ.  He crashes on the right angle turn.  He's not happy with the result at all, but is at least ok.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits, and team Corona Islander gives Yoshi a great change, getting him onto the track in 3rd place behind Fox and Krystal.  Fuzzer and Daisy exit the pits sitting 8th and 9th.  Does team Delta have what it takes to challenge on this circuit?  We'll see.

Lap 22 - Yoshi has some banter with his team on the race radio.  This is unusual, he seems to be ranting about something.  We'll get an excerpt of the translation here soon.

Lap 25 - Maybe  a twist is developing...Wolf Odonnell is having one of his better nights of the season and has gone past Falcon and into 4th place.  He's closing in on Yoshi.  Could he be trying to spoil the party for team CVS Fox?

Lap 27 - We're getting the translation from Yoshi's conversation earlier, he apparently said "this is very familiar, being the lone driver for our team not even halfway through the race.  It'd be nice to have a real partner one of these years."  Yikes.  That's a really obvious dig on Birdo.

Lap 30 - Halfway through the race, Fox leads from Krystal, followed by Yoshi, Wolf, Toad, Jody Summer, Fuzzer, Zelda, Daisy, and Mario in the top 10

Lap 33 - Zelda seems to be giving Daisy fits.  Fuzzer went by her early on, but she's holding off the Sarasaland princess and not letting her by.  Given that team CVS Fox is set for a huge night, Zelda might need some points to keep team Sherwin Williams Hyrule in 3rd in the constructors championship standings.  Fuzzer might have to try to block her off in order to get his girlfriend around, but with Jody Summer ahead of him, slowing down might mean not catching Jody later.  Interesting situation for team Delta here.

Lap 35 - Tough break here for King Dedede, as he misses a turn in the downtown section and goes into the barrier right next to a skyscraper at turn 3.  His night is over.

Lap 40 - 2nd time through the pits now, and there's trouble for team Sherwin Williams Hyrule as Zelda's engine stalls.  Tm3, who can't get into the paddock, actually jumps out of his kart and helps the mechanics push Zelda out of neutral and get going again, but she's now fallen out of the top 15.  Meanwhile elsewhere, team Coors Koopa has decided to stay out through the 2nd fuel stop to take over the lead.  We'll see if they can win the fuel stop lottery.

Lap 43 - Falcon had a rough first half of the race, but he's now linked back up with Jody Summer, and they are battling against Fuzzer and Daisy for position in the pack.  Meanwhile, Wolf has gone past Yoshi into 3rd.  Is there a chance that he could catch Fox or Krystal?  That's the big question now.  Will he go for broke or just try to hold 3rd place...which could get team Stihl Venom out of the relegation zone.

Lap 45 - It's an early end to the night for Toadette, who crashes into the ocean after taking a bump from Donkey Kong on the antigravity loop.  DK might get black flagged for that but he's not in a scoring position anyway.

Lap 46 - Bowser and Koopa Troopa are incensed that no safety car was called for due to DK crashing into Toadette.  They run out of fuel and are ranting hugely on the race radio that race control screwed them.  We may get some clarification on this from race control here shortly.

Lap 49 - Wolf is doing his best to press Krystal, but she's been a little too nimble on the technical sections for Wolf to make up enough time.  It's getting to be late in the game here.  Maybe something weird will happen still.

Lap 60 - Wolf did well...he huffed and puffed, but he couldn't blow down the CVS house.  Fox took the lead on lap 4 and led the rest of the way, taking the checkered flag in Corneria, with Krystal finishing behind him for a 1-2 finish amid the massive cheering crowds.  Wolf finishes third, with Yoshi fourth and Toad fifth.

Final Results:

1.Fox - 25 pts

2.Krystal - 20 pts

3.Wolf - 18 pts

4.Yoshi - 15 pts

5.Toad - 12 pts

6.Fuzzer - 10 pts

7.Jody Summer - 9 pts

8.Captain Falcon - 8 pts

9.Daisy - 7 pts

10.Mario - 6 pts

11.Pichu - 5 pts

12.Megaman - 4 pts

13.Pikachu - 3 pts

14.Peach - 2 pts

15.Luigi - 1 pt

Pretty typical street circuit track if it weren't for those anti gravity loops.

Nothing bad yet.

Whatever happens will be good for us, minus a crash of course.

Should be a good battle with the Chevy team

3 more points for me than Daisy scored. Good.

Qualifying results for MKRA Grand Prix of Mexico:

1 - Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach

2 - Daisy, Rosalina, Birdo, Fuzzer

3 - Triforcemaster, Toad, Toadette, Zelda

4 - Sonic, Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong

5 - Megaman, Fox, Wolf, Banjo

6 - Kirby, Pikachu, Dash, Diddy Kong

7 - Zero, Krystal, Captain Falcon, Jody Summer

8 - Pichu, Pit, Palutena, Kazooie

9 - Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Sonic, Amy Rose

10 - Louie, Olimar, Ryota, Akari

DNF - Krystal, Captain Falcon, Palutena, Megaman, Louie, Akari Hayami, Kirby

10:05pm - The drivers are on the circuit for the formation lap.  This might be the craziest crowd we've seen in the MKRA this season.  Thousands of fans, many wearing costumes, many wearing traditional garb, and almost all sporting the traditional dia de los muertos masks, have crammed into Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.  This is going to be good.

Lap 1 - Lakitu signals green and its time to bring the action!  With such a long straightaway leading into turn 1, the drivers separate enough to where there are no problems until the baseball stadium, where Krystal and Captain Falcon crash into each other on turn 13.  Unlucky 13 for them, and the crash also catches out Palutena.  Safety car out as the marshals get the karts out of the stadium area.

Lap 4 - The race resumes and Mario leads from Luigi, followed by Yoshi, Peach, and Daisy.  Mushroom Kingdom denizens did very well in qualifying here, as with the long straightaway and the tight technical stadium section, this circuit is a true driving test.

Lap 8 - Interesting here, Yoshi sees that Birdo is in the top 10, and despite his misgivings toward his partner a week ago, he's dropped back a few places to link up with Birdo in an attempt to work together.  The team Corona leaders will like to see that on their home turf.

Lap 12 - Yoshi and Birdo's strategy might be especially risky given that team Amazon Plumber and team Delta Sarasaland both are in front of them.  Daisy and Fuzzer are presently mixing it up with Peach and Rosalina.  Team Tesco Princess will need a big night tonight to gain back ground they've lost on teams CVS and Chevolet in recent weeks...with Krystal and Falcon crashing out early they've got a good chance.

Lap 15 - Bad break for Megaman, who has a power unit go dead.  His kart rolls to a stop and his night is over.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits...no real changes here as Mario and Luigi get out 1st and 2nd, with teams Delta and Tesco still entangled, with team Corona behind them.  Tm3 and Zelda round out the top 10.

Lap 23 - We've got a crash in the back of the field as Louie and Akari Hayami collide entering the stadium area on turn 12.  Akari took way too aggressive a line and left Louie with nowhere to go.  They're out.

Lap 27 - Whoa...holy moly!  Disaster for team Corona as Birdo gets his line all wrong going into the hairpin at turn 6.  He collides with Yoshi, spinning him around and knocking them both from the track!

Lap 28 - It now appears that this crash was no accident.  Birdo gets out of her kart and Wart, Mouser, and Clawgrip appear from out of the crowd, and the four of them unfurl a banner at trackside that reads "estoy termina, adios", literally translated, "I'm done, goodbye."  It looks like Birdo has intentionally crashed herself and Yoshi out of the race and is declaring that she is outta here.  Yoshi can only shake his head in disbelief.  It appears his rather public complaint about Birdo's poor driving a week ago has come back to bite him big time tonight.

Lap 30 - The race is going again, and it's a little less congested at the front now.  The question is now whether team Tesco or team Delta can hang with team Amazon, who has led from the start.

Lap 33 - Daisy makes a big move, going past Peach and then past Luigi on the hairpin to move into 2nd place.  This is going to be very interesting now.

Lap 36 - Now Princess Peach passes both Luigi and Daisy within one lap and gets into 2nd behind Mario.  The top 3 teams in the race are all separated now.  It will be very interesting to see how the teams work the 2nd pit stop.  Will they try to coordinate and team back up or just go for speed and make it every racer for themselves?  With so many of these drivers near the top of the driver standings, will somebody ignore the team orders here?

Lap 40 - 2nd time through the pits and Fuzzer collides with Rosalina as both are exiting their respective paddocks!  They have to go back and have damaged repaired before exiting.  This knocks both of them out of the top 15.  Race control may look at this but this could be a simple case of one driver being in the other's blind spot.  Yikes.

Lap 42 - Mario has led from the beginning, but Peach is right behind with Daisy third and Luigi fourth.  Banjo has made a huge move up the field into 5th and Koopa Troopa and Toad are running 6th and 7th, with Tm3 and Zelda falling back a bit after a lackluster pit change.

Lap 45 - Bad break for Kirby as his braking unit fails and he crashes on turn 16 heading back toward the start/finish line.  He was up into 11th place as well at the time.

Lap 47 - For the first time tonight we have a lead change as Peach goes past Mario into 1st place.  Meanwhile Luigi goes past Daisy into 3rd.  Further back, Fuzzer is starting to recover from the pit crash, and is back into 14th.

Lap 50 - Peach is still leading but Mario and Luigi are working together to try to catch her.  Koopa Troopa and Toad seem to be, oddly, working together, they perform a nice double drs maneuver to get around Banjo and move into 5th and 6th respectively.

Lap 60 - Coming down the stretch, Mario and Luigi just couldn't do enough to reel Peach in.  She rides to victory on the night of the dead, with the two Mario brothers coming 2nd and 3rd with Daisy 4th.  Fuzzer impressively fights his way back up to 10th place after having major difficulty in the 2nd pit stop.
