Mario Kart Racing Association - 2020 Season

Following her first career MKRA victory right in her own backyard at Hyrule Circuit, Zelda spoke to the media, reflecting back on what was an incredible week for the Hyrulian monarch and her comrades.

Reporter: a video game world championship and an MKRA win within days of each other...that’s incredible.  You must be on a real high right now.

Zelda: I’m not the most excitable person you’ll find but honestly, yes, this feels amazing.  It’s rare to have such accomplishments in close proximity, it certainly leaves you feeling gratified.

Reporter: Take us through the race.  What was your strategy?

Zelda: Well honestly, Tm3 and I just practiced on the circuit a bit in the offseason, and that really helped us during qualifying and on race day.  During the race since we both qualified on Row 1 we were just going to race as a unit and stay close to one another and beat back challengers much like Fuzzer and Daisy did in Sarasaland the previous week.  We’ve learned a lot from watching tape of them, how they take their lines in the turns and draft off of each other in the straightaways.  It makes it very difficult to pass, you basically have to overtake both in one move, and that’s extremely hard to pull off without driving off the road or crashing.  The added advantage we have is that Tm3 and I have a lot more experience racing on both cobblestones and grass than most other teams.  Those are two surfaces you don’t see much of on other MKRA tracks and both feature at Hyrule Circuit.  This all added up to a big win for Tm3 and I.

Reporter: Some are calling your victory, ahem, slightly illegitimate, seeing as Tm3 had the lead going onto the final lap and he had a very poor final lap timewise.  Were the team orders to let you pass and win?

Zelda: I won’t lie to you...it wasn’t team orders.  The race team was ok with either winning the race...Tm3 got on the radio on lap 59 after hearing what the time gap was to third and asked if he should let me win.  I initially said no but he said he wasn’t sure if he had the fuel to finish at top speed.  He slowed up a bit late and I won.  Now whether Tm3 was embellishing his fuel situation, who knows, but we finished 1-2 so that’s all that matters.

Reporter:  Is your next goal to finish on the constructor’s podium this year?

Zelda:  Yes.  I think we can too.  I doubt realistically we can finish above Delta Sarasaland or Amazon Plumber, but that 3rd spot is definitely up for grabs.  Many teams have a good chance at it.  I think Tesco Princess, Chevrolet Top Driver, and CVS Fox will probably be our biggest adversaries for that spot.  Hopefully we’ll be able to race better on some of the futuristic antigravity circuits that we struggled on a year ago.  The human world circuits will be the key races as none of us have raced in Sochi, Suzuka, Austin, etc before.

Reporter:  finally, in such a celebratory time in Hyrule, where you’ve spent time celebrating with your subjects throughout the kingdom...so we want to know as does everybody else...when’s the wedding?

Zelda: It’s coming.  Announcement coming at our home opener on September 6

Qualifying for Chocolate Island Grand Prix @ Choco Mountain Circuit

1 – Donkey Kong, Phoenix Wright, Dedede, Rosalina

2 – Toad, Daisy, Krystal, Captain Falcon

3 – Kirby, Banjo, Palutena, Wolf

4 – Bowser, Miles Edgeworth, Mario, Luigi

5 – Fuzzer, Triforcemaster, Toadette, Fox

6 – Jody Summer, Pit, Ryota Hayami, Peach

7 – Yoshi, Koopa Troopa, Diddy Kong, Zelda

8 – Sonic, Amy Rose, Pikachu, Pichu

9 – Dash, Louie, Megaman, Zero

10 – Kazooie, Akari Hayami, Birdo, Olimar

DNF - Dash, Louie, Birdo, Rosalina, Daisy, Mario, Akari Hayami, Miles Edgeworth, Jody Summer, Fox

9:30pm - The racers are onto the track for the formation lap.  The Choco Mountain Circuit, positioned on Dinosaur Land's Chocolate Island, is known for giving away a year's supply of chocolate to the winner...so aside from the points there is that to battle for tonight.  This circuit is a mix of rock and chocolate dirt, with some very high banks carved into the mountain.  One of the passages leading around the lake is sometimes known for rockfalls, which could be a danger tonight given that there has been quite a bit of rain recently.  No rain expected during the race tonight though.

Lap 1 - It's lights out and away we go and it's a surprisingly tame opening pair of turns.  All racers head down through the tunnel and there's damage in the middle of the pack as some wings get knocked off.  The debris hits some racers in the back and Dash, Louie, and Birdo all end up with damage and tire punctures.  Their races are over before the end of the first lap and the safety car is out.

Lap 4 - On the restart, Toad blasts past all of the heavyweight drivers with a furious acceleration to take the lead.  He leads from Phoenix Wright, then DK and Rosalina as Dedede gets a poor start and falls to 7th behind Daisy and Falcon.

Lap 8 - Falling rocks cross the track near the lake loop and the safety car and the bulldozers are out, but not before Rosalina and Daisy are caught up and knocked from the track into the railing.  They're ok but their karts aren't, and their night is over.

Lap 12 - Toad remains in the lead following the restart, but the heavyweight drivers are having trouble getting away in the heavy rock and chocolate dirt of the track.  Kirby makes a big acceleration now and moves up to 3rd.  Wright remains 2nd with Toad 1st.

Lap 15 - Bad break for Mario as he has a power unit short out.  His night is over.  Momma-mia

Lap 20 - First time through the pits and there's not much movement except that Fuzzer gets a great change as does Princess Peach, they move into the top 10 while Luigi moves into the top 5.  With Delta, Tesco, and Amazon all down to 1 racer each the pits might prove to be helpful to Peach, Fuzzer, and Luigi.

Lap 24 - It's the end of the road for Akari Hayami, who skids in the lake loop and hits the hard rock on the outside of the turn.  She's out.

Lap 28 - Donkey Kong and Dedede have both been racing hard and are pushing the top three.  As long as there aren't too many more stoppages, they might have a good chance to win.

Lap 33 - Luigi makes several passes and goes by Toad on the tunnel straightaway to take the lead.  Amazon fans might have something to cheer tonight after all.

Lap 37 - Fuzzer now stands in 7th as he continues to race on his lonesome.  Meanwhile, Tm3 and Zelda have linked up and are racing as a unit again.  They sit 13th and 14th right now but are on a very similar surface as last week in Hyrule...they might be able to tag team their way up through the field late on.

Lap 40 - 2nd pit stop and it's Luigi that gets out first in front of Peach 2nd, Toad 3rd, while Yoshi gets an excellent change and moves into the top 10.  Fuzzer comes out in 6th place.  He might have a shot to contend here if he is able to get through the heavyweights sitting 4th and 5th.

Lap 44 - Donkey Kong has had a strong night and has now pushed up into 2nd place behind Luigi, going by Toad and Peach on the same lap.

Lap 46 - DK now goes into the lead, passing Luigi on the straightaway.  That downhill stretch through the tunnel is really helping out DK, Bowser, and Dedede all right now.  The lightweight and middleweight drivers are having a difficult time keeping up.

Lap 49 - Oh man, big crash in the midpack as Miles Edgeworth, Fox, and Jody Summer all get tangled in turn 4 and there's big debris everywhere.  Safety car is out.  Big opportunity possibly coming up for Toad and Kirby, maybe Peach too.

Lap 52 - On the restart, its a great jump for both Toad and Peach, who work together and draft off one another in turn 1 and 2 to take over 2nd and 3rd, while Luigi takes over the lead from DK, who leads Bowser and Phoenix Wright.  Fuzzer is coming out in 7th while Tm3 and Zelda are 10th and 11th.

Lap 55 - Donkey Kong and Bowser are now trying to move back up through the field.  This is going to be a fun finish.

Lap 57 - DK and Bowser come barreling down the straightaway and move into the lead, the prior three drivers basically all ceding the position as they had no chance to hold them off.  Now the question is whether or not there will be a late crash.

Lap 59 - Bowser makes a bad line into turn 4, and Peach and Luigi go right by into 2nd, and it allows DK to pull far ahead into the lead.  He's got it made now.

Lap 60 - Donkey Kong comes up with the victory and we'll see if he likes Chocolate as much as he likes Bananas.  Peach finishes in 2nd and Luigi third with Bowser fourth and Toad fifth.  Fuzzer comes home in 7th place while Triforcemaster finishes 10th.

Qualifying Results for Kanto Grand Prix at Saffron City Street Circuit:

1 - Toad, Yoshi, Fox, Pikachu

2 - Megaman, Mario, Captain Falcon, Banjo

3 - Amy Rose, Peach, Toadette, Koopa Troopa

4 - Kirby, Kazooie, Krystal, Akari Hayami

5 - Luigi, Daisy, Sonic, Pit

6 - Jody Summer, Phoenix Wright, Olimar, Pichu

7 - Wolf, Bowser, Miles Edgeworth, Zero

8 - Donkey Kong, Dedede, Triforcemaster, Birdo

9 - Dash, Fuzzer, Zelda, Louie

10 - Ryota Hayami, Diddy Kong, Palutena, Rosalina

DNF - Bowser, Miles Edgeworth, Diddy Kong, Rosalina, Phoenix Wright, King Dedede, Fuzzer, Jody Summer, Mario, Peach, Daisy

9:30pm - The racers are on the track for the formation lap.  It is a gorgeous night in Kanto's largest city, 71 degrees and not any wind or rain to contend with.  The circuit is one of the longest in the MKRA and is fully on the streets of the city, starting and finishing near Silph Company downtown, with the finishing stretch coming southward from the Saffron City Gym.  The route which was developed by Xander a year ago is shaped somewhat like a plus sign, with parts of the course going into antigravity near the entrances to Routes 5, 6, 7, and 8 near the edges of town.  This could be an advantage for the antigravity-starved teams from the futuristic worlds, and indeed, some teams like BMW Bomber and CVS Fox had good qualifying runs this afternoon.  Most interestingly, Pikachu put on a show for the home fans in qualifying and starts on Row 1.  We'll see how it goes.

Lap 1 - Lakitu goes green and its time to bring the action!  It's a pretty tame first lap as this is one of the wider circuits and paved as well.  All get through the first lap unscathed and on we go.

Lap 3 - Through the lap few races, no racer in the MKRA has been more red-hot than Bowser, who has netted a victory and a bunch of other strong performances.  But his hot run is over tonight as he fails to see Miles Edgeworth as he comes through the Celadon antigravity loop.  He bashes right into the Uber driver, ending the night for both drivers.  Miles is furious.

Lap 7 - Safety car was on the track for several laps, and unfortunately just after we get back to green flag racing there's more trouble.  Near the rear of the field, Diddy and Rosalina get tangled up on the Cerulean antigravity loop.  Seems since its been a long while since we've seen any antigravity tracks that some of the drivers are struggling with it.  Neither was clearly at fault on this one from what we can see but both karts are unable to continue.

Lap 10 - Back to green flag racing and on the restart we have our first lead change as Toad is overtaken by Fox.  There aren't too many Lylatian supporters in this part of the Nintendo Universe but the few that have made the long trip to Saffron City are on their feet now!

Lap 14 - Pikachu and Yoshi rub tires going through turn 8 just before the Lavender antigravity loop.  That was a close call for both.  They'll probably try to hold out until the first pit stop it appears.

Lap 16 - Bad luck for Phoenix Wright as his braking unit fails and he crashes on turn 6.  Not a good night for team Uber Lawyer, who while they aren't in the relegation zone, aren't exactly comfortably away from it either.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits, and of the drivers at the front, Yoshi gets the best change and is out of the pits in the lead.  It's been a miserable last few weeks for the green dino but he might be angling to get back to the winner's circle tonight.  Yoshi leads from Fox, then Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Mario, Megaman, Banjo, Amy Rose, and Peach

Lap 22 - Pit made a bit of a gamble at the start of the race and dropped way back to link up with Palutena, who crashed in qualifying and had to start on Row 10, but the gamble appears to be paying off, racing together the American Skyworld pair are both into the top 20 now.  The antigravity might prove helpful to them.

Lap 25 - Another team moving up through the field is...Roscosmos Cosmonaut?  Yes...Louie and Olimar are now both into the top 15.  These guys have been brutal all year and look assured to be relegated, but we've seen crazier things happen.  A win or a pair of high finishes could start to change conventional wisdom.

Lap 29 - This race is looking bizarre right now.  The teams at the bottom are looking at scoring quite a few points here, while all three of the top teams, Delta Sarasaland, Amazon Plumber, and Sherwin Williams Hyrule, are all struggling

Lap 33 - Pikachu goes by Fox on lap 32, and makes a daring move just before the Vermillion antigravity loop to pass Yoshi and take over the lead, and that elicits a massive roar from the crowds around the Saffron City Circuit.  Team Electrobras Mouse is in the relegation zone entering tonight but they'd jump out of it surely with a win tonight.

Lap 35 - Megaman is now getting aggressive, making several cool passes to move up into 2nd place.  Yoshi and Fox seem to be struggling all of a sudden.  Krystal is making a move up the field and is now into 7th...maybe Fox is strategically dropping back a bit so he and Krystal can work together.  One things for sure, this is getting good.

Lap 38 - King Dedede's power unit fails.  He is out and looking quite flustered.  I wouldn't want to be one of the mechanics for Krogefour Popstar right about now...

Lap 40 - 2nd pit stop and two teams have trouble...Mario gets stuck as one of the pit crew has difficulty getting one of the tires on properly, while Koopa Troopa is held up as the pit crew can't get the jack out cleanly from under the hood.  They both lose valuable places.  Pikachu continues to lead but Fox and Krystal both got strong changes and are now 2nd and 3rd.  That can't be good for the home fans as its likely to be 2 v 1 racing now.

Lap 44 - Pikachu is trying his hardest to hold off the Lylatian duo.  Luckily for him both Captain Falcon and Olimar have arrived from behind and are challenging the Lylatian duo from behind.

Lap 47 - Fuzzer's night ends as he tries to make a pass on Jody Summer to which she defended very aggressively, perhaps too much so, and they end up crashing right outside the Saffron Gym.  Not the night either was hoping for, especially the points leader.  We'll now see if his teammate can gain ground, Daisy sits 13th at the moment.

Lap 50 - Are you friggin kidding me.  A Snorlax has walked out from Route 8 and has parked itself on the track near the bottom of the Lavender antigravity loop, taking a nap literally in the road.  Several drivers end up having to take sudden evasive action and Toadette and Donkey Kong both end up crashing into the barriers nearby.  The track's warning signals are able to slow the other drivers down before anybody else runs into trouble.  The race has been red flagged while somebody summons the nearest Poke Flute.

Lap 51 - After an eleven minute delay we're back to racing.  It's a free for all on the restart and luckily for Pikachu he gets away while Falcon and Fox battle each other for the corner.  Both nearly crash before Fox evades at the last second and gives up 2nd place.  Daring move by Falcon.

Lap 53 - Olimar has moved up into 6th place, Pit is now 7th, Palutena 8th.  A bunch of Mushroom World dwellers are behind them, including Yoshi, Toad, Peach, Mario, and Daisy

Lap 55 - Falcon, Fox, and Krystal continue to battle it out for 2nd, and it is about as intense as you're likely to see it.  The good news for Pikachu is that Falcon's pass on Lap 51 set this all up and he may now be away for the win.  The roars from the crowd rise higher and higher as we go.

Lap 58 - Fox and Krystal decide to not risk a crash and let Falcon away for 2nd, content on 3rd and 4th.  Further back we have a crash as Daisy and Peach pull a double sided maneuver to both pass Mario, but at the last second Mario fights back and swerves as they head into turn 8.  All three crash into each other and all three are out!  Man...it's an empty night for teams Amazon, Delta, and Tesco, who'd have thunk that at the start of the night?

Lap 60 - On a frankly bizarre night of racing on one of the more bizarre circuits you'll find, it's a celebratory final lap for the mouse that led the way in making Pokémon a global phenomenon.  The roars are deafening as he makes his way down from Saffron Gym to Silph Company to cross the line...Pikachu wins his first race ever in the MKRA.  Captain Falcon comes home second and Fox McCloud comes home third for a key podium for him and his team.

Final Results:

1.Pikachu - 25 pts

2.Captain Falcon - 20 pts

3.Fox - 18 pts

4.Krystal - 15 pts

5.Toad - 12 pts

6.Olimar - 10 pts

7.Yoshi - 9 pts

8.Pit - 8 pts

9.Palutena - 7 pts

10.Megaman - 6 pts

11.Amy Rose - 5 pts

12.Louie - 4 pts

13.Sonic - 3 pts

14.Banjo - 2 pts

15.Kazooie - 1 pt

Good thing we weren't in those wrecks.

Getting close to pitstops guys. Be ready and do your jobs flawlessly.

Well we aren't a factor yet but still plenty of racing left.

One more stop tonight so be ready guys.

And that lead will take a hit. Not good.

We've had red flags for bad wrecks and weather issues. But for a sleeping Snorlax? That's a new one.

And my points are safe with that crazy wreck.

Great job for the Pokemon character that has been the face of the franchise since day 1.

3 - Phoenix Wright (18 pts)

4 - Louie (15 pts)

The final was a very interesting battle indeed.  The bigger group seemed to pick on Palutena a bit early, but once she was down to 1 balloon it pretty much became every player for themselves.  Louie struggled once it became a 4-way and he was first eliminated, but his making the final continues a sudden resurgence for team Roscosmos Cosmonaut.  Wright and Krystal had quite the battle, with both knocking each other down to one.  Then things got cagey as all three were down to their final hit.  Ultimately, Palutena was able to eliminate Wright with a red shell, but just a few seconds later Krystal made the winning hit with a skillful green shell shot to land a big victory for team CVS Fox.  The crowd was understandably upended by Palutena's defeat at the final hurdle but they still cheered her loudly.  It was a huge night for team American Skyworld as they pick up 30 points.  Phoenix Wright lands a podium finish and a trophy with his 3rd place finish, which ends a mini slump for team Uber Lawyer.

Peach wins on her home racetrack for the 2nd year in a row...she’s just nauseatingly tough to beat on home soil, not unlike Daisy in Sarasaland.

Lots of victories by home racers in the middle third of the season.  It’ll be interesting to see if that continues into the home stretch.  Next race will take place on Wednesday most likely.  Tuesday’s are bad for me from now until December so I’m going to update the remaining race dates to Wednesdays.

I do believe with Daisy coming 2nd at Royal Raceway we have a lead change at the top, with Daisy taking over first place from Fuzzer.

Qualifying for the Grand Prix of Russia this afternoon went off without a hitch this afternoon, and everything was ready for a Grand Prix tonight.  But then, about 90 minutes before race time as fans were arriving, suddenly without warning, Russian military units began arriving at the Sochi Autodrome and began ushering the fans, teams, and drivers out of the area.  The nearby Olympic village and facilities were also evacuated.

In typical Russian fashion, very little information is being provided as to why this happened.  NSN is reporting that the MKRA is working with the Russian government and civil authorities to see when the race can be run.  The hot rumor right now is that Russian authorities were acting on information that the track could have been a target for terrorists and that an attack was imminent.  NNN is also dispatching a team to Sochi and will seek to learn more.

When asked if he and Daisy knew about what was going on, all Fuzzer could say was "no" before adding:

"Delta Sarasaland is confused about this as you all are seeing our night get turned upside down without any reason. It's frustrating because we have plans to run a special livery with Russian airliner Aeroflot (a fellow member of SlyTeam, which Delta is a founding member) meaning we'd also have a special connection with the folks there along with the obvious Roscosmos Cosmonaut team. Now we are stuck and waiting for answers instead and this silence is frustrating."

NNN is reporting this morning that an overnight raid in the Valley of Koopas was carried out Tuesday by members of the Mushroom Police at several residences and hideouts not far from Larry Koopa’s Castle.  It was during this raid that evidence of an impending operation against the MKRA was discovered.  The information was passed along to all MKRA hosts in the Nintendo Universe as well as to Russian, Japanese, Mexican, Brazilian, and US authorities.

The Russian government is staying mum but one prominent Russian, street fighter champion Zangief, is speaking out.  “Somebody at the Kremlin definitely got a tip that somebody in the Valley of Koopas, probably the NSFW gang, was planning to attack the Sochi Autodrome.  Honestly I would’ve let em do it.  They would’ve been buried here.  My country mother Russia, we don’t mess around with terrorists.  You become an enemy of the state here, you just disappear.”

NSN is reporting that there is still Russian military presence in the greater Sochi area, but that the track should be open soon as people have been seen walking through the Olympic venues and the open areas in between, something we didn’t see last night

Edit:  NSN reports The teams were cleared and returned to the paddock late this morning with one key absence...team Coors Koopa is nowhere to be found.  The MKRA has confirmed that the team has been banned not just from the race but have been ordered to leave Russia immediately.  They will not be participating tonight.  Neither Russian authorities nor team Coors Koopa have made any public comment at this time.

MKRA Russian Grand Prix - Sochi Autodrome

DNF - Phoenix Wright, Palutena, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, Krystal, Toadette, Triforcemaster, Luigi, Pikachu

9:25pm - The drivers are on the circuit for the formation lap.  The Sochi Autodrome Circuit is a mostly rectangular circuit that goes from northeast to southwest, with the start line near the train station and Olympic village and the main features being a semicircle turn around Bolshoy Ice Dome and a 3-way rectangular section just north of Fisht Olympic Stadium.  The circuit is then mostly straight back to a pair of 90 degree turns which lead back to the start finish line.  The circuit is fairly long and has long straightaways which should benefit the heavyweights but there are enough technical sections to make it a fair test for all.

9:30pm - Lakitu counts it down, 3, 2, 1, and its time to bring the action!  Everything is good through the semicircle turn but in turn 5 near Fisht Olympic Stadium, Phoenix Wright gets nudged from behind by Palutena.  Wright spins out of control and bangs into Rosalina, and the resulting crash also takes out Donkey Kong as collateral damage.  Safety car is out

Lap 4 - On the restart we have a surprise leader, Kazooie is leading at the front from Fox, then Fuzzer is third with Captain Falcon, Megaman, Olimar, Luigi, and Toad in the top 8.

Lap 7 - Big problem for Krystal as her power unit shorts out.  She's been on an absolute roll of late, so this is very bad luck.  She pounds the steering wheel in disgust but then ultimately gets out and tosses her helmet to an adoring fan near the Olympic Village.

Lap 10 - This is a massively important night for team Roscosmos Cosmonaut.  They've been driving better of late, but in last place, they'll need a bunch of points tonight if they realistically want to avoid relegation.  So far its going well, Olimar is 5th and Louie is 11th.

Lap 13 - It's unlucky lap 13 for Toadette, who gets nudged by Sonic on turn 7 and crashes.  Race control may take a look at this one as Sonic took a really tight line there.

Lap 14 - Sonic is black flagged, and must serve a stop/go penalty.  That's pretty much night over for him barring a miracle.

Lap 15 - Kazooie is still leading right now, but Yoshi has made a huge run up through the field and is now 2nd.  And perhaps even more surprising, both Hayamis have been racing extremely well and are now sitting 4th and 5th!  Ryota might be feeling at home next to the Black Sea while Akari might be in her element near the Caucasus Mountains.

Lap 18 - This is a crazy race, with overtakes happening every lap and people going up and down the standings left and right.  This is making for great entertainment for the fans in Sochi but is undoubtedly making the team managers and mechanics nervous.

Lap 20 - First time through the pits and its pretty uneventful.  Team Ford Performance is having a great night so far and they arguably get the best change, getting Banjo into the top 5 behind the leader Kazooie.

Lap 23 - We have a new leader and its the blue bomber!  Megaman had a strong pit change and was able to push ahead of Kazooie on the semicircle turn around Bolshoy Ice Dome to take the lead.

Lap 25 - Problem for Triforcemaster as his braking unit fails going into turn 5.  He hits the wall in a scary collision.  Safety car is out.  Luckily Tm3 walks away from the accident without too much of a problem.

Lap 28 - There seems to be some #sochiproblems inflicting the race teams tonight.  This time its Luigi that is hit as he goes by the start/finish area his transmission seems unable to shift out of second gear.  Cars stream past him and he eventually retires.

Lap 32 - We have another lead change and this gets the home fans on their feet as Olimar takes over the lead from Megaman, going by him on turn 3.  We've seen many home racers win on home soil in recent weeks, but this would be the biggest surprise of all!

Lap 35 - And now Pikachu is hit with a surprise mechanical as his front right tire locks up and then eventually blows out as he tries to navigate the Bolshoy semicircle.  He pulls off to the side of the road and is out.

Lap 40 - 2nd time into the pits and this is a great change for team Honda Hayami.  They get Akari out in 1st place and Ryota in 3rd behind Olimar.  The teams at the bottom of the standings are in the front with 20 laps to go

Lap 42 - Captain Falcon makes his way up through the field but takes a questionable line going into turn 18 as he tries to squeeze past Yoshi.  The dino runs him off the road, causing him to lose places.  He's very upset on the race radio.

Lap 45 - King Dedede and Banjo get tangled up in turn 5 and 6, and there's debris as Banjo's front wing comes off and Dedede's front left tire is punctured.  Dedede has to pit and that's pretty much the end of his chances.  He's furious as you can imagine.

Lap 47 - You'd figure the threesome at the front would be easier than normal to catch given who is up there, but team Roscosmos and team Honda are racing like their lives depended on it here.  Akari is still leading from Olimar, with Megaman now third.

Lap 49 - Captain Falcon now gets into it with Fox McCloud, the two coming together in turn 19.  The two sustain some damage but are able to continue.

Lap 50 - With 10 laps to go it's been a quiet night for team Delta but they are both in the top 10, with Fuzzer 8th and Daisy 10th.  As it stands they'll gain ground on the other teams near the top.

Lap 52 - A big move by Megaman as he goes past Olimar and then Akari to take over the lead.  He's racing with wild abandon at the moment and looking very formidable.  Kazooie is hanging in tough as well, he's running 4th.

Lap 56 - Yoshi makes a move and passes Olimar to move into 3rd.  Toad is now running 5th after making several strong passes just past the Bolshoy semicircle.

Lap 58 - Akari is doing her best to challenge Megaman, but cannot seem to catch the blue bomber.  At this point she's more concerned with holding Yoshi off for 2nd it would seem.

Lap 60 - It's been a memorable night for Megaman, and he glides to victory in Sochi, a huge triumph for team BMW Bomber.  Yoshi passes Akari on the final lap to finish second but Akari Hayami still comes up with a big podium finish, and brother Ryota's 9th place finish capped a huge night for team Honda Hayami.  Olimar couldn't maintain his lead but hangs on for 4th place and Louie comes home 11th capping a good night for team Roscomos on home soil.

1.Megaman - 25 pts

2.Yoshi - 20 pts

3.Akari Hayami - 18 pts

4.Olimar - 15 pts

5.Toad - 12 pts

6.Mario - 10 pts

7.Kazooie - 9 pts

8.Fuzzer - 8 pts

Qualifying for Grand Prix of Japan @ Suzuka Circuit

1 – Donkey Kong, Phoenix Wright, Dedede, Rosalina

2 – Akari Hayami, Banjo, Mario, Captain Falcon

3 – Bowser, Daisy, Palutena, Wolf

4 – Jody Summer, Miles Edgeworth, Krystal, Luigi

5 – Fuzzer, Triforcemaster, Megaman, Fox

6 – Kirby, Pit, Ryota Hayami, Peach

7 – Yoshi, Koopa Troopa, Diddy Kong, Zelda

8 – Sonic, Amy Rose, Pikachu, Pichu

9 – Dash, Louie, Toadette, Zero

10 – Kazooie, Toad, Birdo, Olimar

DNF - Banjo, Captain Falcon, Bowser, Palutena, Amy Rose, Dash Bowman, Toad, Toadette, Ryota Hayami, Louie, Olimar

8:55pm - The drivers are on the circuit for the formation lap.  This race is a huge one, not just in terms of the standings or the races atop the Drivers and Constructors Standings, but because of the symbolic significance of this race being in Japan, Nintendo's home country.  Everybody is going to want to win this one, perhaps most of all the home team Honda Hayami.  Suzuka Circuit features an early heartline S-curve followed by a pair of nasty turns, a right angle at turn 9 and a hairpin at turn 11, before becoming a long out and back with long straightaways leading back to the start line.  With the long straightaways and the human world track lacking antigravity or other virtual features, the heavyweight drivers generally did very well in qualifying.  Will they do the best tonight?  A massive crowd of nearly 100,000 race fans are at Suzuka for what should be a spectacle...one obstacle that we could see is the wind...winds are gusting 30 to 40 mph in some sections of the track as a big typhoon is offshore approaching Japan.  It won't get here in time for tonight but the wind could be an equalizer.

9pm - Lakitu's light is green and it's time to bring the action!  The racers are all good up until the right angle turn, where Banjo and Captain Falcon come together and crash.  Safety car is out...luckily nobody else got caught up in that.

Lap 4 - The race resumes but we're back under caution immediately as Bowser muscles Palutena off the track in the hairpin.  Palutena then is enraged and decides to run Bowser right off the track right back in turn 13.  The intentional collision is enough to take both drivers out of the race.  Bowser and Palutena then come to blows on the infield before the marshals can get them separated.  These two have very little history with one another so this is quite unexpected.  Safety car is back out.

Lap 7 - We're back on and this time we have a clean restart.  Phoenix Wright makes a fantastic move to pass Donkey Kong on turn 15 to take over the lead while Akari makes a double pass on Rosalina and Dedede in the hairpin to take over 3rd place.

Lap 10 - Back in the pack, its an early end for Amy Rose, who has her power unit short out in the heartline.  She pulls over and is done.

Lap 15 - Not a whole lot happening right now after a furious pace early on.  Wright still leading from DK and Akari.  Team Delta and Team Amazon are starting to amass though, and are back between 10th and 15th.  The stage is setting for a battle between the MKRA's top teams.

Lap 20 - First pit stop and its a bad stop for Wright, whose Uber team has difficulty dislodging the fuel nozzle.  He only gets back out in 9th place.  DK takes over the lead followed by Dedede.  Further back, Dash Bowman's night is over as his team fails to properly secure the lugnuts on the right rear tire and the tire comes partially undone.  He cannot drive on three wheels and pulls over befuddled.

Lap 26 - Well this is the moment everybody was waiting for...Akari Hayami takes over the lead, first going past Dedede on turn 7, and then whizzing past DK on turn 15 to go into first place.  A massive roar rises from the crowd as a Japanese racer leads the Japanese Grand Prix.

Lap 29 - Fuzzer, Daisy, Luigi, and Mario are trying their best to work as a unit, oddly enough.  All four are sitting 5-8 right now.  Their current problem seems to be Wolf Odonnell, who is driving like a maniac in fourth place.  One wrong move by him and the whole group could get taken out.

Lap 32 - Pretty much status quo here.  Believe me the fans would be just fine with this race ending right now.  This is massive opportunity for team Honda Hayami, and to a lesser extent, team Stihl Venom, both of whom are relegation threatened.

Lap 37 - The 2nd fuel stop is the possible last chance to shake this race up.  Team Honda Hayami is huddled down in the paddock...this is their moment and they know it.

Lap 40 - 2nd time in the pits and some really interesting moves here.  Two of the teams in the back, Roscosmos Cosmonaut and Friday's Fun Guys, stay out on the track...perhaps they figure that's their only chance here.  Seeing this, Ryota Hayami while on the pit lane does not dive into the pit and drives right back onto the track waiting for Akari to come out.  She does come out first among the drivers that did pit.  Sherwin Williams Hyrule has a great change and gets Zelda into the top 10 while most of the rest of the top is as it was.  Toad, Toadette, Louie, and Olimar are banking on a safety car coming quickly here, possibly Ryota too but he might just be out to direct traffic for Akari.

Lap 43 - Indeed that seems to be Ryota's purpose.  He's taking aggressive lines and trying to clear space for his teammate to get by the four drivers up ahead.  Eventually DK starts to gain on Akari and Ryota drops behind her to hold him off.  It's all just a jumbled mess now with the slower lightweight drivers at the front.

Lap 45 - Daisy and Fuzzer pass DK and move into 6th and 7th behind Akari.  Mario, Luigi, and Zelda are right behind DK.

Lap 47 - No safety car and no more fuel for Toad, Toadette, Olimar, and Louie, as they see their gamble come up snake eyes.  Ryota is also out of fuel, but not before he did some impressively unintentional intentional blocking against the Delta drivers, allowing Akari to build her lead.

Lap 50 - Well this is a familiar situation for Daisy and Fuzzer, sitting 2 and 3 trying to run down a single driver.  The person they are trying to run down isn't who you'd figure it'd be, but Akari is racing with the heart of a nation on her sleeve.  Can her Honda hold off Daisy and Fuzzer?  And perhaps better question, can Daisy and Fuzzer hold off Mario and Luigi, who are right behind them.

Lap 52 - With the clump of lightweights eliminated, both DK and Dedede are putting major pressure on Mario and Luigi now as well.  Their speed is posing a problem for the plumbers and if they can get a DRS on the straightaway it might be goodnight for team Amazon's chances.

Lap 55 - Geez, we've got major movement.  DK and Dedede zoom up the board, going by Mario, Luigi, and Fuzzer like corvettes passing an oldsmobile.  But before they get to the front, Daisy makes her move and gets past Akari on the hairpin to take over the lead.  There are roars from the Delta and Sarasaland fans but the majority of the circuit is clearly unhappy with this development.

Lap 57 - Fuzzer decides to come right back at Dedede and passes him on turn 6 at the exit of the heartline, but then Dedede responds by bumping him going through turn 9.  Fuzzer is lucky not to end up with a puncture, only sustaining minor wing damage.  He thinks of going back at Dedede again but thinks better of it.  Mario and Luigi do get by him though, with Zelda hot on his tail.

Lap 58 - DK goes past Akari now into 2nd and is taking aim at Daisy.  He's gaining at a pretty quick rate.  Can Sarasaland's princess hold off the challenge?

Lap 60 - On the final lap, DK and Daisy battle all the way, Daisy defending well through the heartline and the right angle turn.  DK then goes ape, literally, and bumps Daisy off the track in the hairpin.  He takes the lead, while Daisy loses position to Akari, Dedede, Mario, Luigi, Fuzzer, and Zelda before regaining speed.  She's lucky she didn't get knocked out entirely.  DK holds the lead down the straightaway and takes the checkered flag to masses of boos but hold the phone, race control is reviewing this.  The boos are replaced by cheers though as Akari Hayami approaches the line.  She isn't able to hold off Dedede on the final 2 straightaways though, as Dedede goes past to finish 2nd with Akari 3rd but again this is all subject to change.

Aftermath - Race control comes through with their decision, and DK is assessed a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Daisy.  This results in him finishing back in 9th place.  Ordinarily a driver would be black flagged for causing an intentional crash but (as was the case at Big Blue last year) a driver cannot serve a penalty in the pit lane on the final lap, meaning a standard time penalty is utilized instead.  What this means is that as the 2nd driver across the line, King Dedede has won the Japanese Grand Prix.  Upon hearing the decision, Dedede lets out a shout and floats to the top of the grandstand, reveling in victory with the section of team Krogefour supporters.  At the other end of the track, its an even bigger celebration for Akari Hayami, who finishes 2nd.  She has a big smile on her face, bathing herself and others in champagne on the podium.  Mario manages to finish third with Luigi fourth, Fuzzer fifth.  What a race!

Final Results:

1.King Dedede - 25 pts

2.Akari Hayami - 20 pts

3.Mario - 18 pts

4.Luigi - 15 pts

5.Fuzzer - 12 pts

6.Zelda - 10 pts

7.Daisy - 9 pts

8.Wolf - 8 pts

9.Donkey Kong - 7 pts

10.Rosalina - 6 pts

11.Phoenix Wright - 5 pts

12.Jody Summer - 4 pts

13.Yoshi - 3 pts

14.Megaman - 2 pts

15.Pit - 1 pt
