DLurkster
Quote The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time. Fans everywhere can now experience Pikachu on the big screen as never before, as a talking detective Pikachu, a Pokémon like no other. The film also showcases a wide array of beloved Pokémon characters, each with its own unique abilities and personality. The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe. “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” also stars Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) as Tim; Kathryn Newton (“Lady Bird,” TV’s “Big Little Lies”) as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story; and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“Godzilla,” “The Last Samurai”) as Lt. Yoshida. Directed by Rob Letterman (“Goosebumps,” “Monsters Vs. Aliens”), the “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” creative filmmaking team includes two-time Oscar nominated director of photography John Mathieson (“The Phantom of the Opera,” “Gladiator”), production designer Nigel Phelps (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies”) and Oscar-winning editor Mark Sanger (“Gravity”). Visual effects are by Moving Picture Company (“Wonder Woman”) and Framestore (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”). Launched in 1996 to overwhelming response, the Pokémon brand is a global sensation that now encompasses a robust video gaming fandom with over 300 million units sold worldwide; the Pokémon Trading Card Game available in 11 languages with more than 23.6 billion cards shipped; an animated television series in its 21st season that is available in more than 160 countries; and over 20 animated films; as well as books, manga comics, music, toys, merchandise, and apps, including the wildly popular Pokémon GO, that has been downloaded over 850 million times and is enjoyed across the globe by fans of all ages. “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” is set for release on Friday, May 10, 2019. The film will be distributed outside of Japan and China by Warner Bros. Pictures, in Japan by Toho Company, Ltd. and by Legendary East in China. Tyranogre
Well, the writing seems to be pretty good, the jokes are fairly well-written, and Ryan Reynolds is clearly doing his best as the title character. But those uncanny valley CGI Pokemon are nothing short of terrifying. Link, the Hero of Dreams and Doc Brown 2 Quote Link to comment
Fuzzer1
Warner Bros is releasing it here in the US? I thought all Nintendo related movies would be distributed by Universal. Quote Link to comment
DLurkster
I've warmed up the Pikachu looking like he does but that Charizard tho. The other Pokémon are meh looking. EDIT: Yeah, forgot to say the writing is on point and the jokes are pretty good. Edited November 12, 2018 by DLurkster Doc Brown 1 Quote Link to comment

Elemental Hero
The only proper way to discuss the Detective Pikachu trailer is for us all to just sit in a room silently, awkwardly looking at each other, wondering who's going to say it first. Quote Link to comment
DranSeasona
So yeah... This is a thing, now. Wow. I do definitely think the Pokémon are nightmare fuel, but they may grow on me. We shall see. Doc Brown 1 Quote Link to comment
alienboyva
I'll be honest...That was actually better than I was expecting. Seeing all those realistic PKMN was a bit jarring aft first, but it made me think that a live-action version PKMN Origins would be pretty cool. Not sure how I feel about Ryan Reynolds voicing Pikachu, but it totally fits the style they're going for. I dig that movie poster, but it doesn't really scream PKMN movie. EDIT: *VIEW AT YOUR OWN RISK!* Spoiler BURN IT, NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Edited November 12, 2018 by alienboyva Doc Brown 1 Quote Link to comment
Ridley Prime
Will still probably be better than the Monster Hunter movie. Doc Brown and Shadow118 2 Quote Link to comment
Surge135
I saw the fuzzy Pikachu in the thumbnail and thought "What the fuck is this movie doing to my beloved franchise?!" Then I watched the trailer... the CGI Pokemon still need to grow on me, but the trailer has me intrigued. DLurkster, alienboyva and Doc Brown 3 Quote Link to comment
Edie Napier
It looks better than it has any right to be. I think the CGI pokemon look dope, they still look like their original designs but have some pseudo-realism to them. This looks like it'll be a fun and charming romp, what the fuck. Young P
I get the sense that a studio exec read this quippy screenplay, was reminded of Deadpool, and then decided to just cast Deadpool. It almost seems a little too obvious, but the combination of the self-aware comedic sensibility, the gritty noir aesthetic, and the presence of Pokemon is really bizarre and interesting. I'm glad it exists even if it ends up being a misfire. DLurkster 1 Quote Link to comment
purple_beard
Its no Super Mario Bros. or The Wizard..... Pika-fur will be all the rage....but I actually think it works for being real world. Quote Link to comment
Tyranogre
Those gym-class dodgeball shoulders. That face that resembles the result of a drunken one-night-stand between Thomas the Tank Engine and the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Those two strands of hair resembling blue goat horns. Those boxing-glove hands with individual fingers. That peach-fuzz hair that you can just barely make out if you squint hard enough. I don't know how they did it, but they somehow managed to create the single ugliest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I'm actually quite impressed. Quote Link to comment
Dancing Mog
Deadpool voicing Pikachu is enough for me wanting to see this movie. Doc Brown 1 Quote Link to comment
Tyranogre
Terrifying CG aside, I'm glad to see that Greninja made it into the movie after so much gen 1 whoring they've been doing over the past few years. Doc Brown 1 Quote Link to comment
