alienboyva
In a recent interview with Jez San, founder of Argonaut Software (mostly known for Star Fox on the SNES and the Super FX chip), detailed their canceled VR headset for the SNES that they once were working on with Nintendo... Full color and head tracking?! Can you imagine if this would have came out back then and actually caught on? Who knows?...We could all be playing something like this today... *see spoiler* Spoiler I can't believe Nintendo really decided to cancel this in favor of the Virtual Boy? Even Argonaut knew how bad that thing was. Though to be fair, maybe they canceled it because the VB would be cheaper? ...'Cause it sounds like the Super Visor would have been pretty expensive if released back then. Man, it really makes you wonder what other crazy shit never left Nintendo's doors? It's so cool to hear stories like this. Edited September 27, 2018 by alienboyva Quote Link to comment
The Ultimate Mario Fan
The Virtual Boy was a fantastic system. /truth The universal derision of a thing has no impact whatsoever on its objective value but solely on its subjective reception. In accordance with the precepts of aesthetics, the Virtual Boy was a misled masterpiece. (Such a shame other people didn't realize they had to "open their eyes" to play it...) Gunpei Yokoi, the late genius none of us deserved, had practical reasons for why the VB was designed the way it was, as well as why this VR system from Argonaut would not have worked even on the functional level. Now we are left with crap like Playstation VR and reality-sim touchy phones. Yay for the death of creativity, all hail the Virtual Boy. Eliwood8
Well of course the guy that worked on it is going to claim it was awesome. But let's not act like Nintendo makes decisions on a whim. They surely had their reasons for going forward with the Virtual Boy, even if it wasn't successful in the end.
