About fucking time!

I wasn't impatient per se, just concerned when it will be announced? I was gonna post some time this month ask when Goldeneye would release but similar to directs, new Zelda news, and the next Switch, I'll just wait till Nintendo is ready share the news.

Really thought we were gonna go 2 months with a N64 game.

Maybe presumptuous to say but with FE: E out I think we might see more news shared by Nintendo now. It will be slow but it come, all that I mentioned most are waiting for from Nintendo.

In case no one saw this recent post of mine in another thread,

Is there a reason we can still get Call of Duty and other big war themed games released during wartime, but not a niche one like Advanced Wars? I was cordial about the situation before, but now, I say they should just release the AW game already which has been done.

I knew the announced NSO stuff was coming sooner or later, so the Advanced Wars thing has mostly been my only concern with Nintendo as of recent, and it begs the question, when will it be released? When world peace has been achieved? (aka never)

I've otherwise still been content enough with what I have, so I rarely feel news hungry, be it wanting a Direct or even the thought of another hardware at this time even though it's expected at some point, but the Advance Wars case remains a peculiar topic with how long it's been. I mean the Russia stuff isn't gonna end anytime soon, so where does that leave the fate of the AW game? I'm not even a fan of that franchise particularly, but it's still concerning that it should just go back to being dead due to unfortunate real world timing even though they've had a completed game on their hands.

Reminder that the antagonists in Goldeneye are primarily Russian. There's even a level in the game where you go through Saint Petersburg in a fucking tank based on a chase scene in the film... And we're getting that in a couple days before the new Advanced Wars. Far as Goldeneye, it probably helped that the 007 film franchise is still in a waiting period to find another Bond actor now that Daniel Craig is done, so the suits at MGM/EON didn't mind Pierce Brosnan’s Bond being back in other media for the time being.

That aside, just remembered I still have some other remaining games I'd like to see on N64 NSO; mostly on the Rare side. Diddy Kong Racing for instance which hopefully Nintendo and Microsoft could come to some kind of agreement on, seeing as how MS owns everyone in the game except Diddy (Banjo, etc). Get Force Jemini and Blast Corps would be nice bonuses.

Perfect Dark's not really needed as much now since there's Goldeneye though; basically Goldeneye in the skin of an original IP since Rare couldn't get the rights to Bond a 2nd time, but if we ever got PD on the service, I wouldn't complain. The rating for NSO N64 is T though, so it would have to raise to M for PD, but shouldn't be a problem if they get the rights to it. I know PD has its vocal fans, who usually say it was better than Goldeneye, but even putting aside my love of 007, can't say I agree with that notion. The soundtrack and level design of Goldeneye stood out far more for me in a vacuum, and Goldeneye was the highest selling game on N64 besides Super Mario and Mario Kart 64, which generally says more on popularity than what vocal fans online say. What's superior in quality is always subjective though, but Goldeneye obviously did something right in becoming one of the most renowned FPS's in gaming.

Oh, we still have the Pokemon Stadiums to wait on too aside from anymore potential Rare properties.

I am a HUGE James Bond fan and thought Goldeneye was his best Bond movie of his run.  That said, on the video game side of the game--I knew friends who were super into this game and bought LARGE screen TVs just to play 4p death matches all night on it--making evenings of it and the whole deal.  I finally got a chance to play it and I thought it sucked--wasn't vibing with the FPS... playing against "pros"/friends who had it who played it all day and night to the point it was no fun for me...  Move on to PD64 and since everyone was getting in on the ground floor, I found that game way more enjoyable in terms of play control and multiplayer enjoyment.  I heard the sequel that came to XBX sucked and I played it once at a friend's house who had it and I didn't like it at all.  I'd love to go back to the OG again.  i don't think me or my brother still have his original cart around the house anymore for whatever reason.

I'll just edit it into this post.

For those that might want a dual stick setup for Goldeneye, people have been using this.

  • Set the control style in game to 1.2
  • Use the Controller Mapping in the Switch main menu
    • Swap both Sticks (left is right, right is left)
    • Change ZL and L to R (ADR aka Aim) and change ZR and R to L (Fire)
  • Save the custom preset if you'd like for later

Got the info from GameFAQs

Finished Goldeneye on 00 Agent earlier. Took me pretty much the whole weekend, in between other things. The joycon controls took some getting used to at first. Stick sensitivity for aiming aside, was mainly weird having ZL to shoot instead of ZR or something, but the regular R button for my crosshair aiming started coming natural with it in time.

Had to replay the first level on all three difficulties to get used to the difficulty spike again. Things then started going smoothly until I got to the Bunker 2 level which was worse than I remember, even with the throwing knives strategy. Didn't help that your silenced pistol is locked in a safe, and the only weapon guards mostly have is AK’s, thus limiting your stealth options. The other option was just to power through unlimited enemies, so I did plenty trial and error from room to room.

Some of the hardest parts of the game are still when you either have to escort or protect Natalya, but with Bunker 2, still helps to wait till near the end of the level to get her out of the prison cell when the enemies are cleared out. It helps when she has a magnum in the Jungle level at least, having aim bot assist against aim bot enemies. Protecting her while she's on a computer in the level after is still one of the hardest parts by far though.

The Caverns level after was okay with how careful I was for most of it, but near the end when you see Travelyan, aside from slowly dealing with the two turrets up ahead, I forgot that infinite guards spawn behind you a few at a time, so you have to get through the rest of the level quickly. Speaking of infinite guards...

The Cradle level. Awesome as the level itself still was with the layout, music, and settling the score with Travelyan once and for all, the infinite guards with dual submachine guns at the beginning, middle, and all throughout were the real challenge; having to constantly look over your shoulder each spot before you approach fighting Travelyan, even at the end when you chase him down to the bottom. You can have objective B completed when the level's about to end as you wait to get on the chopper, and some enemy stragglers can shoot and kill you from above.

Far as the two bonus levels, I thought I would have a harder time with Egyptian Temple, but it was actually the Aztec stage that was harder. I forgot how much health Jaws had, and when you kill him, you start having to deal with endless enemies that have the moonraker laser. Satisfying as the infinite ammo aspect of the laser is, kinda found myself using the AR33 assault rifle more due to how well it zooms in when you aim.

The Egyptian Temple was more straightforward if you know the golden gun puzzle, the times where Baron Samedi spawns, and the routes to get to him that's either quickest or having to deal with the least amount of enemies along the way. The golden gun only really felt effective to use on Samedi himself. While it has the one shot one kill thing going for it, it comes with being pretty slow, and with the guards, found you were better off using the pistol or SMG's against them.

Still have some remaining cheat codes left to unlock, where you have to beat a certain level on a certain difficulty under a certain amount of minutes. Challenging as a lot of them are, is still satisfying going for or getting them. I had forgotten how it was to unlock something in a game that isn't something little like concept art or sound test and actually gives replay value. To say the game still holds up is an understatement.

Other than that, will see about maybe playing Goldeneye online with people sometime, though don't know who really plays it. Just don't pick Oddjob and we're good. lol

Far as the Perfect Dark series, yeah, the first game is still pretty good in its own right; can say as much as one who had it, but the sequel from what I gathered was Perfect Trash. With other Bond games at the time during the Pierce Brosnan era, there was Tomorrow Never Dies on PS1, though it was strangely a 3rd person shooter and not that well received. I did get The World Is Not Enough on N64 however, though don't have it on me anymore. Wasn't made by Rare but some studio under Activision or something that later went bankrupt, but it was pretty good as a game sequel to Goldeneye, I'd say. Newer mechanics for most of the guns, more methods of stealth, added voice acting, AI bots in multiplayer like what Perfect Dark had, etc...

A pretty overlooked game for being one of the last good titles on the 64. Not sure if it'll ever be re-released in some form since it wasn't too well known and popular like Goldeneye, but would be nice. Still satisfied though on having Goldeneye again alone, and will try to experience the Xbox version at some point, preferably when it's not locked behind Game Pass.

Has anyone actually played this? Feel it's an underrated gem on the service as pointed out. After I finished my earlier Goldeneye playthrough, went back to playing Winback on N64 NSO, though didn’t realize how many games it later inspired. Metal Gear Solid 2 with the tactical shooting, Resident Evil 4 with the laser dodging, even the first Gears of War with the cover system... Also forgot how it had lock-on aim, which may explain why I was accustomed to it in the Metroid Prime series. Winback was ahead of its time with the cover shooting mechanics and is surprisingly still fun, although eventually repetitive sometimes. I first experienced the PS2 port, but the N64 original surprisingly plays just as well, despite the lack of voice acting that was present in the other version.

Other than that, I finished my Banjo Kazooie playthrough just in time for today's news. Looking forward to whenever Banjo Tooie gets added to the service, along with the Pokemon Stadium's and such as previously mentioned.

The Game Boy Advance makes NSO EP more worth the price too now on top of that. Will likely taste test some of the Game Boy stuff before I try out Prime remastered later.

Nice to see GB/GBA games on NSO - i thought there’s a chance we could see those at some point

Not a huge selection, but looking forward to see those libraries expand in the future

hopefully they’ll bring GBC games to Gameboy online at some point too

And i’ll look forward to seeing the Gen 1/2/3 and FR/LG brought to those NSO at some point

Though I don’t know if it’s likely, but hopefully we can finally see localized versions of the second Pokemon TCG and Mother 3 at sone point?

I mean, if they finally brought Mother/Earthbound 1 over to the Wii U and NSO maybe it’s a slim possibility to happen for those, too….?

Though we still have a handful of games we haven’t gotten on N64 so hopefully we can get more titles on that system … only can think of a small handful of titles, though…

They have GBC and GBC only games...

  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
  • Game & Watch Gallery 4
  • Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (GBC ONLY)
  • Wario Land 3 (GBC ONLY)

...With more announced.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC ONLY)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC ONLY)
  • Pokémon Trading Card Game
  • KIrby Tilt 'n' Tumble (GBC ONLY)

Yeah, I hope they bring the GB/GBC and GBA PKMN games as well. Though, Game Freak / TPC can be weird about this. I feel like the only reason we got the gen I and gen II games on the 3DS VC was because of the 20th anniversary, ...But fingers crossed. 🤞

Besides these, I'd also love to see KIrby's Dream Land 2 (my fav. GB game) and Kirby's Block Ball. Even though I don't have the +EP, on GBA I'd love to see Wario Land 4 and if we can get JPN only Super Famicom games in the NSO SNES app that are all in Japanese (Puyo Puyo 2 and Mario's Super Picross), then I'd absolutely love to see Rhythm Tengoku (The original Rhythm Heaven). Also, I'd love to see the bit Generations games, since they're all in English (Think of them like the Art Style games for WiiWare and DSiWare), and since KIrby Tilt 'n' Tumble (gyro controlled) is in the pipeline for NSO GB/GBC app, it be awesome to see Wario Ware: TWISTED! (my fav. GBA game, not counting the JPN only Rhythm Tengoku) for the NSO GBA app as well.

I saw Mother 3 trending after GBA was announced for NSO (of course). Here's hoping Nintendo sees it's worth the investment of localizing that game for NSO, since I think that's one of the big reasons that it wasn't localized for the Wii U VC back when JPN got it. With games like EarthBound Beginnings and Star Fox 2, those were localized back in the day, but never released. With Mother 3, it seems like Nintendo would have to do quite a bit to localize it, because apparently there are some things in the game that won't go over well outside of JPN.

Ah, didn’t realize that some of them were GBC before- thought those were all originally from GB

Only was thinking that we could get those games since we have gotten/getting Snap,Puzzle League and Pokemon Stadium 1/2 on the N64 so shouldn’t be impossible to happen at some point in time?

only other two Pokemon games i can think of that exist on the GBC/GBA are the two Pokemon Pinball games

I think the only other Pokemon N64 game we don’t have is Hey You Pikachu, but I doubt that’s likely to happen since that requires a mic for that game from what I recall  and I don’t think there’s an alternative to that as far as I can think of

We currently have Super Mario Land 2, Wario Land 3 and Kirby’s Dream Land, so the rest should follow suit at some point in the future

Looking at my Backloggery, would be cool to get the Sonic Advance games,Sonic Battle,Kirby Nightmare In Dreamland……A Link to the Past and Metroid Fusion could happen too

WarioWare Twisted would be quite nice, though i don’t see it in my backloggery… maybe I forgot to add it? Pretty sure i have that game…..

Also really like them to bring over Super Mario Advance over - always preferred the GBA version over the original  tbh - but i grew up with the GBA version, so some slight bias towards that version

Also unlocked a memory of playing Lego Island 2: Bricksters Revenge - wouldn’t mind that or the other LEGO Gameboy games brought to NSO… especially the 2001 Bionicle game… i had that when i was younger but went missing (though some of them might be a bit clunky…)

My collection is pretty small between Gameboy/Color/Advance and the Ambassador 3DS games so i don’t know what I’d like to see beyond those, honestly

Hm… not really familiar with any of that Mother 3 stuff, honestly - not something I’ve ever looked into at all

Playing the original Kirby's Dream Land is really messing with my head. Looking into why, its stages have been remade as Spring Breeze in Superstar and I think Kirby's Adventure (and its GBA remake Nightmare in Dreamland) also remade parts of it.

I'd never heard of that Alone in the Dark game. Its graphics are very impressive for GBC! But within the first few minutes, an intelligent woman is endangered because the manly protagonist belittles her concerns and goes off to shoot some wild dogs... so let's keep that game on the shelf.

Played through Super Mario Land 2 today within a few hours

Short, but fun - still not sure how to change filters, though

Weirdly nostalgic though - feel like i played it before when i was younger…Maybe i played someone else's copy? I’m pretty sure i never owned 2…

Could be thinking of SML 1, too… maybe i had that? Honestly, kind of hard to remember considering that was when i was way younger….. a lot of memories are pretty hazy

I know i bought the first one from the 3DS Eshop awhile ago

Looking forward to the rest of the Mario Land/Wario Land games when those eventually come to NSO

Glad to see GB/GBC and GBA games come to the NSO service. Wish there were a few more options for GBA at launch. I played some Mario Kart Super Circuit and remembered how awful I am at it.

I hope G&W Gallery 4 comes to the GBA NSO even though the GB/C NSO already has G&W Gallery 3.

Also can’t wait to try Kirby and the Amazing Mirror with actual people.

I guess to not much surprise, GB and GBA started out with little as per the usual drip feed method. Like before with SNES online, will wait for more of the Donkey Kong titles to be added, and Fusion on the Metroid side of things.

Kirby’s Dreamland (the first one) and Wario Land 3 are nice standouts for what the GB library currently has though; not to mention Mario Six Golden Coins, Metroid II, and such, but will wait for more before I touch the app much more again.

I was thinking, whenever we get the Pokémon Games on NSO, and with some games supporting 1-4 online, wiuld that mean there’s a chance for them to have online trading and the Gen 3 era to gave online trading and 4 player online battles since that generation introduced 2 v 2 battles?

That would be pretty sweet - also would mean I’d be able to complete the earlier generation dexes for once

That’s the one thing I’ve never been able to do in earlier games up to Gen 5 or 6 if remembering correctly…

And I’m saying when and not if, because i’d be surprised if they didn’t pop up at some point

I don’t think we’ll get all 3 gens at once, but maybe there’s a small chance we could see Gen 1 on Pokemon Day?
