Troubling reports have come from Emirates Skyworld today saying the UAE airliner is threatening to cut funding to the team unless a good finish occurs tonight.

In an email the team received from Emirates themselves which was posted on the team website on the home page, the airliner said that the low amount of points accumulated so far “hurts our brand significantly and has made us question why we should continue to sponsor a losing team.”

The email added that:

”Failiure to attain a top 10 finish by either Pit or Palutena at Mario Kart Stadium will result in immediate termination of sponsorship later this week. We are disappointed that this team is not living up to our standards set in the initial agreement signed last year.”

The team themselves said that “the email posted here amounts to blackmail and puts us in a tough situation that could threaten our team going forward.”

The team is in 16th place ahead of a 17th place tie between NASA Astronaut and the recently formed Friday’s Fun Guys, both with 0 points each in the constructors championship standings.

Almost immediately after the statement was posted online and on the teams social media channels, Dallas based American Airlines announced it has plans to sponsor the team going forward should the threats posted by Emirates become real later this week.

A spokesperson for the airliner said that “we were in contention for that team’s sponsorship but were sadly outbid by Emirates during the sponsorship negotiating period. To see this happening to them is wrong and shouldn’t lead them to have more pressure that Pit and Palutena have to deal with already.”

Delta Sarasaland also released a statement expressing disappointment at Emirates for making what amounts to “a life or death scenario based solely on bad track performance at a few races when they could easily be contending for the win if they catch a few lucky breaks later this season.”

Row 5 - Jody Summer, Captain Falcon, Kirby, Krystal

Row 6 - Rosalina, Palutena, Birdo, Zelda

Row 7 - Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Conker, Banjo

DNF - Daisy, Mario, Amy Rose, Wario, Birdo, Zelda, Bowser, Peach, Donkey Kong, Ash Ketchum, Fox

9:45pm - racers are getting onto the track for the formation lap.  The track inside the Mario Kart Stadium loops along the edges of the stands and features a central loopty-loop utilizing antigravity, which is a feature on many of the newer tracks on the circuit.  We're just minutes away from start time.

10pm - In the words of Lee Diffey - it's time to bring the action!  And it's carnage on turn 1 with a 6 car pileup!  Points leader Daisy is caught in it, as is Mario, Amy Rose, Wario, Birdo, and Zelda.  Their races are over just as soon as it started.  Toad retains the lead off the break but Pit, Fox, Koopa Troopa, and Metaknight are right behind.

Lap 6 - Pit looks determined tonight.  He takes the lead with a slick move on the loopty-loop.  Palutena meanwhile is moving up through the field, she is 8th.  Maybe the move by Emirates this afternoon has something to do with this, or maybe its coincidence.

Lap 10 - Now it's Fox that takes the lead, again on the antigravity loop.  Krystal is moving up through the field, and is now 6th.  Olimar and Louie are in the top 10 as well.  It looks like the addition of antigravity for the first time in the series might be playing to the advantage of the air & space based teams.  Though we should also point out that the heavier drivers are pretty much all struggling.

Lap 15 - Olimar has now surged into the lead.  Louie is in 5th position right now as well.  Who would've seen this coming, a quarter of the way through and its CVS Fox, Nasa Astronaut, and Emirates Skyworld with both of their members in the top 8.  Toad and Koopa Troopa are the only outsiders at the moment.

Lap 18 - Bowser and Peach have what you might call a complicated relationship...but way at the back of the pack, they both slowed down, almost as if to discuss something.  Maybe they have something up their sleeve...

Lap 20 - First time through the pits, and get this, Bowser and Peach stay out on the track, moving into the lead.  This is a severe gamble...they are basically hoping for a safety car to come out within the next 5 laps or so otherwise they will run out of gas.  Toad is next out of pit lane, moving into third, while Toadette also has a very quick change, moving into the top 10.  Have to say that team Fridays Fun Guys came to play in their debut tonight.

Lap 27 - That safety car never came, and both Peach and Bowser run out of gas.  Maybe they weren't going to pass the field organically so trying the worst to first gamble was worth it, but it came up snake eyes.  Two more races on Peach's grid penalty after tonight.

Lap 30 - Donkey Kong calls it a race, simply pulling off and retiring the car.  He was in last place after Bowser and Peach's dismissal.  Not a good run for DK up to this point and frustration might be taking hold.

Lap 34 - Further back in the field, Conker makes a move to cut off and pass Gary, who ends up giving the squirrel a bump on the next turn and proceeds to flip him the bird as he goes by.  Oh boy, well that's a few bucks.

Lap 38 - Yoshi has made some slick moves and is now nearing the lead, having moved into 3rd place, surrounded by the racers from Nasa Astronaut and Emirates Skyworld, who are racing like their lives depended on it tonight.  Friday's Fun Guys are continuing to race well too...you really couldn't ask for a bigger shakeup in the standings if it stays like this.

Lap 40 - Into the pits for the 2nd time and Luigi has the fastest change, he moves up into 4th place.  The top 3 remains unchanged as its Olimar, Toad, and Yoshi in front.  Palutena, Toadette, Louie, Koopa Troopa, Pit, and Gary Oak round out the top 10.

Lap 44 - Conker and Gary Oak battle once again, and this time Gary bumps Conker off the track.  Conker's kart is damaged and he has to pit, which more or less takes him out of contention.  He looks furious, and mutters some instructions to Banjo through the race radio.  Captain Falcon and Jody Summer start to move up through the field, both are now in the top 10.  They've both had poor seasons by their own admission so far, we'll see if they can change that here.

Lap 46 - Very tight at the front, this could be a great race to the finish.  Toad takes over the lead once again which gives the crowd a massive roar.  Banjo slows down to link up with his teammate coming out of pit lane...they're definitely plotting something.

Lap 47 - Ash Ketchum pulls off into the pits, there is something wrong with his power unit.  His race is over.

Lap 49 - Luigi passes 4 people on one lap to take the lead!  That absolutely electrifies the crowd...they're on their feet in Mushroom Kingdom!

Lap 51 - Well now this is really getting out of control...Banjo and Conker have slowed down to the point to where they are getting lapped by the leaders.  This can only mean one thing, they've got a score to settle.

Lap 54 - Krystal surges into the lead on lap 53, only to be overtaken by her teammate Fox the very next lap.  CVS Fox is sitting 1-2 at the moment.  What a finish that would be for the duo from Lylat!  But it's still extremely tight, with no less than 8 racers within 3 seconds of the lead.  Pit, Palutena, Toad, Captain Falcon, Yoshi, and Olimar are all still in there.

Lap 55 - It's now obvious what Banjo and Conker are doing...they are driving in such a way to impede Gary's progress.  He was in 9th place on lap 52 but has now fallen all the way to 17th and out of the points.  Frustration is clear as he rants into the team radio.

Lap 57 - Now it's Captain Falcon who makes the big move, going by Pit, Krystal, and Fox to take the lead!  Yoshi, Luigi, and Toad are now right behind the top four, all trying to work together to string together a final push.  This is awesome stuff.

Lap 59 - The white flag is out, and there's 7 racers within a second of the lead!  Falcon, Fox, Toad, Yoshi, Pit, Krystal, and Luigi are all in it to win it.  This is going to be epic.

Lap 60 - On turn 2 of the final lap, Fox attempts to pass Falcon for the lead, but takes a rotten angle and skids out and crashes into the barrier.  Heartbreak for him.  Falcon is slowed by the move and Toad takes over the lead.  He holds it until the final antigravity loop, when Pit takes a perfect line and surges ahead.  Pit gets to the final straightaway and holds on for his first MKRA victory and a watershed moment for team Skyworld Emirates.  Toad finishes 2nd while Captain Falcon manages to hold off Krystal and Luigi for a podium place.

Aftermath - Well this was predictable...Conker and Gary get into it on pit lane, and perhaps just as interesting, Ash Ketchum runs down Banjo and gets into the bear's face as well.  The pit crews manage to keep the two teams from an all out brawl, but there's clearly a lot of bad blood after the events that transpired on the track tonight.

Final Results:

1.Pit - 25 pts

2.Toad - 20 pts

3.Captain Falcon - 18 pts

4.Krystal - 15 pts

5.Luigi - 12 pts

6.Olimar - 10 pts

7.Yoshi - 9 pts

8.Palutena - 8 pts

9.Toadette - 7 pts

10.Koopa Troopa - 6 pts

11.Louie - 5 pts

12.Jody Summer - 4 pts

13.Kirby - 3 pts

14.Metaknight - 2 pts

15.Diddy Kong - 1 pt

Man, terrible qualifying run. But Toad got P1 in his first MKRA race. Good start for the new team on the track.

Aw man. Delta Sarasaland has its first DNF now. Tough break for you Daisy.

Pit is showing that when your backs are on the wall, go for it. Hopefully they don’t pull a fast one on those poor employees caught in the middle and leave them anyway even if he were to do good.

That should level the playing field a bit. Good thing CVS isn’t pulling any similar tricks on Fox and Krystal.

Better keep an ear on any juicy info from the team scanners that could come out of this one.

If they don’t get a yellow, they’re toast. Don’t make those gambles until later in the race. How should I know? From watching tons of NASCAR races. Oh and yes, Fridays Fun Guys really couldn’t have asked for a better start to their race season.

Well that ended in failure for Peach and Bowser.

And DK calls it quits for the night. Bummer.

Expect him to lose some cash later this week for that bird flip of his. What an arrogant jerk.

Last 20 laps should be fun.

Team orders are going to make things UGLY if Banjo follows through on those instructions.

*notices Banjo and Conker driving slowly*

*radios team officials* Guys I think something bad is gonna happen with them and Gary.

*team official radios back* We’ve got that same sickening feeling in our stomachs as well bud. Just run a good race for some points at least.

*Fuzzer on radio* 10-4.

This is bad, this is bad, this is BAD! I just know it is gonna be bad.

Im expecting Kellogg’s and Ford won’t be happy to see their two drivers doing such awful driving on purpose. Might lose their sponsorship at this rate.

Gonna be a ton of lead changes on the last lap. Oh man.

This is gonna be EPIC!

Didnt get a point. Oh well. About time Emirates Skyworld got a needed victory.

A spokesperson for Kellogg’s has said that “the events that transpired in the MKRA race tonight at Mario Kart Stadium with Conker and Banjo intentionally causing another driver to have a bad finish by driving really slow are not how we want to support our products. We will terminate our sponsorship with Kellogg’s They’re Great effective tomorrow as we are extremely disappointed at what happened tonight.”

As expected, Kellogg’s They’re Great has officially ceased operations following the cereal brand’s termination of the sponsorship following the actions taken by Conker and Banjo last night. Ford has stepped in to sponsor the team, now racing as Ford Performance effective immediately.

And in other, rather gut punching news, how exactly is Emirates Skyworld celebrating their first win obtained by Pit yesterday?

By having their sponsorship terminated.

The team announced that despite getting their first win in MKRA competition thanks to Pit last night, Emirates is still pulling the sponsorship money from the team saying in a second email “we feel that sponsoring a team in a league that caters to fans who don’t have enough cash to use our services runs counter to our clientele we serve globally.”

Social media isn’t taking to kindly to this announcement saying that the decision “unfairly robbed a racing team of cash when they did all they had to do to not lose the money in the first place.” Others have said they aren’t supporting the airliner because “they have shown their true colors today and it’s unfair.”

As mentioned yesterday, American Airlines has announced that it is indeed sponsoring the team, now named American Skyworld, going forward with a spokesperson calling the move by Emirates “dumb, stupid and downright sickening on many levels.”

The events of midweek certainly haven't helped the international presence of the team sponsors of the MKRA.  Indeed, with Jtekt and Emirates departing and American Airlines and Ford sponsoring their teams now, the MKRA is more American than ever in terms of the dollars being outlaid to present the teams.

Also interesting, Gary Oak, despite being fined $40,000 USD for his flipping the bird on live tv, by retaliating against him, Conker and Banjo nearly drove themselves out of the MKRA.  Time will tell if the new partnership with Ford will work out for them.

Qualifying results for tonight's Mute City Grand Prix will be up shortly...

Well, to be fair, Heineken and Rolex aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Think about this:

Both Miller and Budweiser are now owned by companies outside of the US

Also, we haven’t really had any good watch makers in the States with such Motorsport prestige like Rolex

If the series really were to be more American, they’d have all the races on US soil.

Well here’s some good news for what are essentially the last two teams not sponsored by American companies:

Tesco and Corona have both made separate statements prior to tonight’s race saying they’re “not going anywhere,” especially with their two respective teams, Tesco Princess and Corona Islander, having one win each with a good chance for many more wins to come.

BMW also said in a statement provided to German auto site Auto Motor und Sport, it wasn’t happy with Gary Oak’s actions last week and is letting him and Ash Ketchum off with a warning “not to do anything stupid on the track again,” or else BMW Bigshot might be saying Auf Wiedershen as well, which would be bad.

Mute City Grand Prix - Qualifying Results:

Row 1 - Captain Falcon, Jody Summer, Fox, Krystal

Row 2 - Olimar, Louie, Bowser, Wario

Row 3 - Fuzzer, Triforcemaster, Rosalina, Phoenix Wright

Row 4 - Miles Edgeworth, Conker, Banjo, Donkey Kong

Row 5 - Gary Oak, Mario, Palutena, Waluigi

Row 6 - Daisy, Yoshi, Ash Ketchum, Luigi

Row 7 - Birdo, Metaknight, Zelda, Pit

Row 8 - Sonic, Amy Rose, Diddy Kong, Kirby

Row 9 - Toad, Koopa Troopa, Toadette, Peach

DNF - Wario, Birdo, Luigi, Waluigi, Palutena, Diddy Kong, Koopa Troopa, Amy Rose, Metaknight, Kirby

10:10pm - the cars on the track for the formation lap.  After we got our first taste of antigravity last week at the Mario Kart Stadium, we find ourselves on the first of several all-antigravity tracks on the circuit, the famous Mute City Circuit.  The track benefitted the heavier drivers and from the modern and future parts of the Nintendo Universe in qualifying, we'll see if that continues tonight.  It's a beautiful night for racing, temperatures in the upper 60s.  We're almost ready to start.

10:15pm - Lap 1 - It's time to bring the action!  Turn 1 is very congested and 3 racers end up in the rails, which as you know do quite a bit of damage.  Wario's kart is damaged too badly for him to continue, while Louie and Miles are forced to pit early to repair the damage

Lap 7 - It's becoming very obvious that this race could be a 2-team fight between CVS Fox and tonight's home team, Chevrolet Top Driver.  Falcon and Summer haven't had the start they were hoping for and they are bent to get their season on track on home soil tonight.  Fox meanwhile is looking for redemption after crashing on the final lap last week.  Olimar and Louie were hoping to get into the mix here but Louie's early pit stop means Olimar is fending for himself.

Lap 10 - If there's a dark horse team out there tonight, it could be Uber Lawyer.  Phoenix and Miles are both in the top 10 early, and they look quite comfortable on the antigravity circuit.

Lap 13 - Bowser is driving very strongly, and looks like he is bent on making life a lot more uncomfortable for the bounty hunter teams at the front.  His size is a big advantage so long as he can stay off the rails.

Lap 16 - Birdo fails to navigate turn 3 and ends up hard into the rail.  She's finished.

Lap 19 - The safety car comes out as three racers get tangled on turn 4 and end up in the rail.  It's Waluigi and Luigi challenging each other for several laps, but perhaps it gets a little too personal, and Waluigi attempts to make a crazy pass and he spins, taking out Luigi and also Palutena who was just a bystander in it.

Lap 20 - With the safety car out its a frenzy in the pit, and Falcon and Summer's teams do an excellent job, keeping them 1-2.  Olimar's team does well and he exits third, with Bowser, Ash Ketchum, Fox, Krystal, Fuzzer, Miles, Phoenix, and Triforcemaster in the top 10.

Lap 25 - Bowser has now taken the lead.  His kart is simply outperforming the others in the field at the moment.  This would be a heck of a turnup if it holds.

Lap 29 - Donkey Kong is starting to move up through the field now as well, largely for the same reason as Bowser.  DK is one of only a few racers who hasn't scored in the first 5 races, so a podium finish here would really help him kick start his campaign.

Lap 32 - Amid the racing near the front, with their partners further back and likely out of contention, Fuzzer and Triforcemaster seem to be helping each other whenever possible.  Their lines have been smooth and they've been staying out of danger.

Lap 35 - Another safety car as further back in the field, Diddy Kong, Amy Rose, and Koopa Troopa end up in a 3-car accident.  Their races are over.

Lap 38 - Rosalina and Daisy are falling back to the back of the pack, and are close to linking with Peach, Toad, and Toadette in the rear.  The radio isn't revealing any obvious trouble with the car...maybe there's a strategy to played here going into the 2nd pit stop, we'll find out.  Up in the front, Bowser and Donkey Kong are currently 1-2, with the bounty hunter teams running 3-6 as they approach the 2nd pit stop.

Lap 40 - Into the pits for the 2nd time and we have a pit stop gamble for the 2nd straight race!  Peach is rolling the dice again, and this time Rosalina, Daisy, Toad and Toadette are all in on it and stay on the track.  Captain Falcon and Jody Summer's teams are perfect in the pits, and get them out first and second from pit lane, and they are shocked to find themselves in 6th and 7th.  Falcon guns it, looking to close the gap immediately.  Donkey Kong is next out, followed by Fox, Krystal, and Ash Ketchum, as Bowser has some issues in the pits and comes out in 14th.

Lap 44 - Would you believe it...maybe 2-3 or three laps before the Tesco-Fridays group would run out of gas, we have a safety car!  Kirby careens out of control in turn 6 and knocks into Metaknight, taking out his own teammate!  You know that wasn't planned.  Metaknight is furious at Kirby as he emerges from his kart.  Team chemistry was never a plus for this team and this won't help, but this is a huge game changer.  The five who stayed on the track will now have a chance to free pit and stay near the front.

Lap 46 - Back to green flag racing.  This is good stuff, so many teams with a chance now.

Lap 49 - Conker and Banjo both are making a move up through the field now.  Conker in particular seems to be driving like a maniac, making two risky passes on lap 48.  You'd bet he's either going to be on the podium or in the rail soon.

Lap 50 - Ha, just as soon as I mentioned it, Conker tries another risky pass to get by Krystal but Krystal does well to box him into an impossible angle, and he clips the inside rail before careening out of control into the outside rail of turn 7.  He's out.  Fox laughs on the CVS Fox team radio, and Gary gives a chuckle on the BMW radio.

Lap 52 - Peach is holding onto the lead, with Olimar, Rosalina, Falcon, and Daisy in hot pursuit.  Fox, Summer, and Krystal look determined as well.  This is going to be a fantastic finish.

Lap 53 - Toadette crashes, unable to navigate through the crowd of bigger racers and through turn 3.  She finds the rail and cannot continue.  Virtual safety car is employed as we set up for the finale.

Lap 55 - It's a six lap dash for the finish.  Falcon immediately moves up into 2nd, and has his sights set on Peach, who is trying to pull off an unlikely worst to first turnaround to win.  Olimar is holding firm in 3rd while Banjo has impressively moved up to 4th.  Fox, Summer, Krystal, Rosalina, Fuzzer, and Triforcemaster round out the top 10

Lap 57 - Falcon takes the lead, and Summer makes a big move up into 3rd.  The crowd at the Mute City circuit is going crazy now!

Lap 58 - CVS Fox isn't giving up, they've both moved up into the top 5 now, pushing Banjo down to 6th.  Olimar is still hanging tough, having raced without the help of his teammate all race long.

Lap 60 - Captain Falcon has his day, and wins on his home track, winning with a resounding final lap.  Jody Summer also gets a podium finish, sandwiched by Olimar, who had an absolutely outstanding race tonight to finish 2nd.  Unfortunately, Triforcemaster crashes on the final turn, going into the rail after being clipped by Bowser.  His injured kart does make it across the line but not before getting passed by 8 karts on the final straightaway.

Final Results:

1.Captain Falcon - 25 pts

2.Olimar - 20 pts

3.Jody Summer - 18 pts

4.Fox - 15 pts

5.Krystal - 12 pts

6.Banjo - 10 pts

7.Daisy - 9 pts

8.Donkey Kong - 8 pts

9.Rosalina - 7 pts

10.Fuzzer - 6 pts

11.Bowser - 5 pts

12.Peach - 4 pts

13.Toad - 3 pts

14.Miles Edgeworth - 2 pts

15.Phoenix Wright - 1 pts

No surprise to have all four spots in the front row filled by those used to anti gravity racing.

Pit stops should be interesting tonight.

Hopefully my kart isn’t wrecked by him. Same with Daisy.

Waluigi really made himself look stupid there. And hey I’m 8th after the pit stops.

But Miles, Phoenix? Wouldn’t that make it 11 drivers then?

Pretty strange for us men to be working together while our significant others aren’t doing so well. But hey, as long as we aren’t wrecked, it works.

Hopefully girl power works well. We’ll see what happens.

Daisy, you’re basically BEGGING for a yellow flag. And no, your boyfriend is NOT going to crash on purpose to cause it.

But even if it fails, you won’t be relegated to sleeping on the couch tonight.m

Well the gamble paid off. Great job ladies. And it’s safe to say another sponsor isn’t happy. Looks like Kroger is gonna need to have some talks with those two.

Looks like Ford Permormance might be having a victory by making the podium.

Or they could be facepalming like crazy after a idiotic move takes one driver out prompting serious laughs on the radios.

This is gonna be fun. Hey, what happened to Daisy? She’s not in the top 10.

If they win tonight, this crowd will go NUTS!

Oh man, this ones gonna be crazy on the last lap.

Top 10 finish for both of us. Not bad.

With all but two teams in the 2018 MKRA season sponsored by American companies, it was only a matter of time before many of those companies demanded several races on American soil.

As such, a report came out earlier today that the MKRA is looking at having not one, not two but THREE races in the US, all back to back to back to avoid travel costs. So why three races? One for both the East and West Coasts and one in the Midwest.

The tracks considered are:

West: Laguna Seca, California

Midwest: Detroit Street Circuit or Belle Isle, MI

East: Road Atlanta, Georgia

Here’s the track maps and breakdown for each region:

Laguna Seca:

Laguna_Seca.svg

The twisty track, officially called Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca, would be an intriguing challenge for the kart racers complete with a corkscrew at turns 7,8 and 8a and would be in the general area of companies like Uber, fuel supplier Chevron and Amazon.

Detroit MI:

As mentioned, the home of GM and Ford, and being a Delta Airlines hub at Detroit Metro Airport has two courses that have been used for open wheel races over the years.

Detroit Street Circuit:

detroit.jpg

Located within the presence of Cobo Hall and the Renaissance Center, this circuit hosted F1 races from 1982-1988 and was hated by many drivers for being too bumpy and slower than Monaco, which is surprising to hear. No doubt GM would want this option to represent Detroit

Belle Isle Circuit:

track-map-large-20180313.jpg

Used by the IndyCar Series since 2007, save for several years not on the schedule in the late 2000s during the Great Recession, this fast track is well liked by drivers and is a popular stop on the circuit the week after the Indy 500. Being on the eastern part of the island has led to controversey as park visitors are unable to access that area as the time needed to build and then remove the barriers takes several months and has led to protests as a result.

Either way, both tracks are also relatively close to Akron based Goodyear but would undoubtedly be a home race for GM and Ford teams.

Road Atlanta:

Road_Atlanta_track_map.svg

Located 53 miles northwest of Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, the home of the famed Petit Le Mans sports car race every October is a challenging 12 turn course that would be in close proximity to Delta Airlines and other companies based along the East Coast

Keep in mind, nothing is official as this is in the early stages of devolpmenta so naturally no one would have any comments on this.

Ah yes...Belle Isle.  How I have fond memories of you...how I came across the bridge onto it at about mile 19 of the Detroit Free Press Marathon last October.  By that point in the race I was cooked due to the heat, humidity, and wind of the day, but what a picturesque locale within the urban landscape of greater Detroit.

No races will be held outside the virtual world in 2018, but all 3 of these circuits as well as possibly some circuits in Japan or Europe could be considered on next year's slate.

Indeed, those reports failed to acknowledge that statement that if these three tracks DO make it on the schedule; it won’t be until 2019.

And speaking of Detroit, event organizers have decided to focus their efforts on the old Detroit Street Circuit saying in a statement to NBC affiliate WDIV that “While Belle Isle would be a wonderful track to race on next year, not having any word on a deal with IndyCar to keep the Detroit races going beyond 2018 has put a wrench in those plans going forward. We have notified the MKRA of our plans to have the Detroit race on the Detroit Street Circuit with full support from both Ford and GM as well as our Pure Michigan tourism campaign.”
