Mario Kart Racing Association - 2018 Season

Recommended Posts

With Mario Kart having been historically a less inclusive series with regard to characters and franchises than has the NBL (and certainly less so than the NAFA), I'd basically move to throw out any teams in the 3rd party space.  Otherwise, your list is very good Xander.

Advancing to the 4 race promotion series from Xander's picks:

Megaman X and Zero (Mega Man X series)

Samus Aran and Federation Trooper (Metroid series)

Heavy Rider and Dr. Eggman (Sonic series)

Villager and Isabelle (Animal Crossing series)

Pearl and Callie (Splatoon series)

Fiora and Elma (Xenoblade series)

Rachel and Andy (Advance Wars series)

King Boo and Petey Piranha (Mario series)

Hawk and Lark (Pilotwings series)

Teams with 1 substitution:

Akari Hayami and Ryota Hayami (Racing games: 1080 Snowboarding, Wave Race, and SSX respectively)

Urbosa and Riju (Zelda series)

Teams added by Tm3:

Booster and Valentina (Mario series)

Cackletta and Fawful (Mario series)

Jessie and James (Pokémon series)

Pikachu and Pichu (Pokémon series)

Young Link and Skull Kid (Zelda series)

Ganondorf and Twinrova (Zelda series)

Gruntilda and Brentilda (Banjo-Kazooie series)

Edit: Also in MKRA news today...this is a bit shocking and unexpected, but Timber has announced this morning that he will not be returning to the MKRA in 2019.  This leaves a seat open on team Ford Performance.  Banjo has accepted Timber's departure and is now involved in the search for a driver to fill the seat.

Let's see if I can find Banjo any of his DKR buddies who might help him out...

Pipsy... T.T. ... Tiptup... Taj The Genie... Krash... Bumper... Drumstick... Wizpig... Kazooie... Krunch... All here and accounted for.

(As for the Hayami duo, there's no need for the SSX thing then.)

I'd never thought I'd see two Pokemon racing in vehicles... That's not to say they can't... I'm just genuinely curious of how that will work...

Banjo's search has apparently taken less than an hour...it will be Kazooie moving into the 2nd seat on team Ford Performance.

Said Banjo, "I had discussions with Timber in recent weeks, and he said that it was hard basically being commissioner of the Timber Island race league and doing the MKRA as well.  He said he was inspired by the opportunity and did well early on but that it was very hard to manage.  He didn't perform well in the back third of the schedule and he told me that it was time to have somebody who could really commit to it take the seat.  Kazooie had been clamoring to get in ever since Conker's departure, and she was actually a little put off that she didn't get the seat back in the spring.  Now we can say that the bear and bird are back together...and we're looking forward to 2019."

Kazooie stated, "This is awesome.  I'm finally getting my opportunity to drive in the most prestigious race circuit in the virtual world.  I'm going to get out there and kick some butt.  Oh, and if that hag and her sister achieve promotion, that's just going to give us even greater motivation to kill it.  I can't wait!  I don't know how I'm going to wait until March...I wish it all started now!"

The MKRA is near to deciding on which circuits will be featured in the promotion series.  It is likely that they will choose circuits in warmer climates given that it will take place in late November / December, but nobody knows for sure yet.

Edit:  It appears that Ford executives aren't too keen on Kazooie joining the squad, citing her inexperience and bombastic personality, which could be an issue as she's very much like Conker in that regard and he washed out spectacularly last spring.  However, this was basically Banjo's call...he more or less told Ford executives he would leave if Kazooie didn't get the seat.

The MKRA has announced the 4 events in the promotion series.  The standard scoring format used during the main 2018 season will be used.  The aim is to complete all races before the heart of the NBL Playoffs.

Tuesday 11/27 - Sunshine Airport Circuit, Isle Delfino

Tuesday 12/4 - Daisy Circuit, Easton Kingdom, Sarasaland

Tuesday 12/11 - Skyscraper Battle Arena, Mushroom Kingdom

Tuesday 12/18 - Yoshi Circuit, Yoshi's Island

The three teams with the most points at the conclusion of the 4 events will earn promotion to the MKRA for 2019.  Should any teams drop out during 2019, the 4th place team in the promotion standings will have first right to replace the outgoing team.

  • 2 weeks later...

Delta Sarasaland officials announced today that they plan to send team members to a company owned suite at Daisy Circuit for the December 4 race at the Daisy Circuit as a reward for the successes this past MKRA season.

"Obviously Fuzzer and Daisy are coming to the race," the team principle said to reporters. "They are both employees of our team and should also be able to enjoy the celebrations too. Plus, we get to watch a race from the stands and not be on the pit lane for once."

MKRA Promotion Series Race 1 @ Sunshine Airport Circuit, Isle Delfino

Row 1 - Megaman, Samus, Zero, Valentina

Row 2 - Villager, Andy, Petey, Booster

Row 3 - Ganondorf, Pikachu, Cackletta, Gruntilda

Row 4 - King Boo, Fawful, Young Link, Pichu

Row 5 - Dr Eggman, Jessie, James, Twinrova

Row 6 - Hawk, Fiora, Lark, Elma

Row 7 - Skull Kid, Pearl, Callie, Rachel

Row 8 - Akari Hayami, Ryota Hayami, Brentilda, Isabelle

Row 9 - Heavy Rider, Federation Trooper

DNF - Andy, Petey, Cackletta, Gruntilda, Young Link, Dr Eggman, James, Hawk, Fiora, Callie, Heavy Rider, Skull Kid

10pm - Drivers are out on the formation lap

Lap 1 - Lakitu is out for the green, and its green and its time to bring the action!  The first turn on this track is a false S-curve out of the terminal with a drop jump and wow does this cause carnage!  It all starts with Andy and Petey running into each other, which then takes out Cackletta and Gruntilda, whose big bodies are sent flying across the track, knocking out Young Link, Dr Eggman, James, Hawk, Fiora, Callie, and Heavy Rider.  Damn.  Safety car is out immediately.

Lap 4 - We're back to green flag racing as Megaman leads from Samus, followed by Zero, Villager, Valentina, and Booster leading the way.

Lap 12 - It's been pretty uneventful since the opening carnage on lap 1.  Samus has now taken the lead though.  Further back we have some interesting team play going on between Ganondorf/Twinrova and Booster Valentina.  They have formed a pack of 4 and look to take this race by storm.

Lap 16 - The fearsome foursome has done just that, moving past everybody except for Megaman and Zero, who moved ahead after Samus caught a puncture to her front right tire and had to pit to replace the tire.

Lap 20 - First time into the pits and Pikachu and Pichu have the best change of any team and with their fast acceleration they have actually taken over first and second!  Huge swing in the race right there.

Lap 28 - Despite faring badly in qualifying, Ryota and Akari Hayami are performing well and are both up into the top 15 at this point in time.

Lap 32 - We have a change in the front as Megaman has taken the lead back.

Lap 35 - You can definitely tell the teams that aren't whole are generally struggling in this race.  Amazingly though, no drivers have crashed out since the opening lap.

Lap 37 - Ha, old announcers jinx.  Skull Kid hits the wall after taking a bad angle heading back into the terminal on turn 7.  He's out.

Lap 40 - 2nd trip into the pits...no huge changes near the front although Villager gets a fabulous change and has now taken over the lead with 20 laps remaining.

Lap 45 - Some real battles between the teams at the front.  You've got 5 of them, Villager/Isabelle, Pikachu/Pichu, Megaman/Zero, Booster/Valentina, and Ganondorf/Twinrova all battling up there.  Samus has done well to recover into 11th place but is she going to be able to break through this group near the front.  There's always the chance of more trouble later of course.

Lap 48 - Twinrova squeezes through the gap, taking a crazy tight line through the risen bank turn 6 following the jump to take over the lead.  She's stopping at nothing right now.

Lap 50 - Megaman puts in a surge and has now caught Twinrova, who took a bad line under the 747 and nearly crashes.  Villager takes advantage and gets up into 2nd place for the moment.

Lap 53 - Akari Hayami somehow manages to get crazy air off the jump going back towards the terminal and lands in front of 3 competitors.  This causes Ganondorf to have to swerve suddenly and nearly crashes into Zero.  They're all flirting with danger at the front but its all ok for now.

Lap 56 - Man, talk about bad timing...Zero suffers a puncture of his left front tire.  He has to pit with just 4 laps left.  The others are all still up there.  Booster makes a couple of daring passes to move into third.  Megaman and Villager are still 1-2.

Lap 57 - Here comes Pichu!  The tiniest competitor in the field makes the fastest lap of the night and is now up into third.  Pikachu is trying to hang onto his teammate but cannot.  It's been team racing up to this point but now it's all breaking apart as they dash for home.

Lap 59 - Twinrova and Ganondorf regroup with Booster and Valentina and try to make a team charge toward the finish.  Villager falls victim as he spins in turn 4 after being cut off by Valentina.  He quickly rights himself but has lost 5 or 6 places.  Megaman still leads but Pichu is right on his tail hoping to pull off a stunning upset in this opening promotion race.

Lap 60 - The white flag is out and Megaman is pressing all the way, as is Pichu, as is the fearsome foursome behind him.  The big hogmollies behind the mouse try to catch him but Pichu is great through the turns and drops them on the uphill leading to the jump.  But without a true straightaway until the final entrance back into the terminal, Pichu can't get a DRS on Megaman, who drives beautifully.  He holds off the challenge to take the checkered flag at Sunshine Airport!  Pichu comes home 2nd while a vicious battle breaks out for third.  Ganondorf has it briefly but is caught by Booster.  The two rub wheels not once but twice, resulting in a puncture for both.  Valentina and Twinrova then duke it out with Valentina getting the inside line on the final turn to come home third.

Final Results:

1.Megaman - 25 pts

2.Pichu - 20 pts

3.Valentina - 18 pts

4.Twinrova - 15 pts

5.Akari Hayami - 12 pts

That's a fourth of the field wiped out immediately. Ouch.

Funny how this race is going by rather quickly than the main MKRA GPs on average. Just noticing this.

It ultimately took 54 minutes, most MKRA races went between 70 and 90 minutes during the regular season.  I guess I didn't go to the same level of detail tonight.

Well when you don't have any of the prominent MKRA drivers taking part like us two, the races can go by quicker.

MKRA Promotion Race Daisy Circuit Easton Kingdom, Sarasaland qualifying results:

Row 1 - Booster, Pikachu, Megaman, Samus

Row 2 - Akari Hayami, Valentina, Zero, Twinrova

Row 3 - Pichu, Skull Kid, Young Link, Federation Trooper

Row 4 - Villager, Isabelle, Cackletta, Ganondorf

Row 5 - Hawk, Lark, Ryota Hayami, Gruntilda

Row 6 - Brentilda, Rachel, Andy, King Boo

Row 7 - Fiora, Elma, Fawful, Pearl

Row 8 - Callie, Jessie, James, Dr Eggman

Row 9 - Heavy Rider, Petey Piranha

DNF: Heavy Rider, Dr Eggman, Petey Piranha, Ganondorf, Cackletta, King Boo, Booster, Twinrova, Fawful, Pichu

10:25 pm: A moment of silence was held to honor the passing of former US President George Herbert Walker Bush before the playing of the US and Sarasaland anthems as a show of solidarity to the home country of Princess Daisy's fiancee as flags were lowered to half staff.

10:30 pm: Engines have fired as the drivers begin the formation lap around the circuit. For 6 drivers, tonight won't be the only time they'll race on the street circuit as they'll be part of the Easton Kingdom Grand Prix next year too.

Lap 1: Lakitu is at the start with the starting lights. Three lights go from red to green and it's time to bring the action!  Booster gets a great start into turn 1 with Pikachu and MegaMan following him. No carnage to report thankfully.

Lap 3: Safety car is out early as Heavy Rider, Dr Eggman and Petey Piranha all crash at the lighthouse hairpin. They're done early.

Lap 6: Back to green and how about Pichu? Nearly winning last week, he gets an impressive restart and is closing in on MegaMan with a long enough section of straightaway for a DRS opportunity on the front stretch to work with later on.

Lap 7: Want another dump and run at the lighthouse hairpin like earlier this yeat? Of course you do as Ganondorf does one to Cackletta for no reason. Her kart only spins out, not hitting anything but she's got vengance.

Lap 10: Revenge successful as Ganondorf gets rammed by Cakletta in the town section of the track suffering enough damage to the latter of the two to end his race. MKRA officials might want to look at this one.

Lap 11: So Pichu notices Booster and Pikachu side by side in the tunnel area after the two roundabouts and what does he do? Make it three wide out of the tunnel and take the lead before the lighthouse hairpin. What a move.

Lap 12: Well here's a shocker. Cakletta is forced to end her race as MKRA officials determined her wreck of Ganondorf was in a dangerous area. She is rightfully furious and has no plans to enter pit road in protest.

Lap 13: Well that didn't last long as she does pull onto pit road. Car behind the garage, engine off. She's done thanks to her reckless driving which is bound to cause some controversy for this unprecedented decision.

Lap 16: King Boo suffers an engine failiure ending his race.

Lap 20: First round of pit stops are complete with no major issues to report.

Lap 30: Pichu still leads as Booster crashes in the tunnel after a blown tire.

Lap 35: Seems Twinrova isn't happy and wants to take out Fawful in retaliation and is driving slower than normal to find him.

Lap 36: Mission complete as Fawful "accidentally" runs into Twinrova's slow kart before he gets put in a painful choke grip when the two confront each other in retailation for Cacklaetta wrecking her son earlier. Never mess with the mother of the Gerudo King. It is a powerful lession we all learned today.

Lap 40: Second round of pit stops and again, nothing major to report here. Pichu still leads Pikachu and new third place driver Samus who had gotten around MegaMan a lap prior.

Lap 45: The leader has a problem! Pichu would lose control entering the tunnel at a fast speed he would smack hard into the outside wall and destroy his kart. The driver who led much of this race is OUT!

Lap 50: Samus and MegaMam have both passed by Pikachu and look to have a good old fashioned dogfight for the win with 10 laps left.

Lap 55: 5 laps left and MegaMan takes the top spot back but Samus is not far off. Does the DRS come into play here?

Lap 59: Last lap next time by and Samus gets the lead right back from MegaMan. We could be seeing an epic battle for the win.

Lap 60: Both drivers somehow managed to stay side by side to the finish as MegaMan makes it two wins in a row barely nipping Samus at the line by inches.

Results to come shortly.

Results:

1. Megaman 25 pts

2. Samus 20 pts

Two villains getting after it...I’m so shocked.  Have to wonder what Twinrova is thinking after seeing Ganondorf get intentionally rammed.

Cackletta getting a full race black flag is only the 2nd in MKRA history after Conker’s, which of course he got for ramming his own teammate

Wow...Booster blows a tire and crashes, that was your polesitter out of the race.  Ouch.

I fell asleep before Pichu’s wreck...oddly enough that was right in the same spot that Zelda wrecked at during the regular season.  Maybe the MKRA needs to look at improving the safety going into the tunnel.

Twinrova taking her aggression out on Fawful was expected, but could be very costly as she might have thrown away valuable points.  Battle arena up next too...

Should be looked at indeed.

A new report has come out from a memo released by the MKRA to all current teams outlining the 2019 rules package, specifically moving towards an open wheel style body.

The body style in question is the Circuit Special which bears similar resemblances to F1 and IndyCar vehicles.

Here is a photo of the body style in qiqestion:

CircuitSpecialBodyMK8.png

Why use this body? The memo points out that "as we are racing on tracks used in Formula 1 and IndyCar (Belle Isle) next season, it would be smart for our vehicles to share similarities towards our Earth based open wheel counterparts for 2019."

Link to comment

An MKRA approved test took place earlier today at Delta Sarasaland's test track with them, Amazon Plumber CVS Fox, Tesco Princess and Chevrolet Top Driver all taking part testing the new Circuit Special body package for the 2019 season.

The new body shape drew positive reviews from all drivers taking part in the test saying they felt like it still drove similar to the standard karts used last season with an added roll bar at the top of the seat area added for protection in case of rollovers.

Many of the other drivers also took time to offer their condolences to Fuzzer following the sudden passing of his father last Tuesday, with Krystal speaking to reporters about what such a loss means going forward.

"His passing means there's one less person celebrating future titles with Fuzzer, wether it's an NWS title with the Coins, any MKRA victories, especially in Detroit, a possible NAFA Confederations Cup win for Sarasaland, to special events Fuzzer will be part of like his upconing wedding to Daisy, and also if they have any kids down the road. Those kids won't get to be introduced by Fuzzer's dad as their grandfather given he died so young. He had a lot of life ahead of him and to see it taken away so soon is truly a tragic loss for all."
