Sonic Mania General Discussion

Recommended Posts

I really like this game. I thought it would get over my issue of Sonic in terms of cheap death and obstacles.

...THAT SAID...

Trying to beat Oil Ocean Part 2 Boss. Screw the fact that the platforms fall down, and you get stuck in hard to move oil! I'm currently playing as Knuckles, who I thought was pretty easy to use. GLIDING! I was so close in a matter of times, but those falling platforms suck as well!

Spoiler

I remember Getting stuck on Metal Sonic when he went into that machine that made mini Silver Sonics. I kept trying to jump into them, then I saw a video and realized you spin-dash into them while they're starting up a spin-dash.

Oil Ocean's boss was really annoying as well. Taking out the two guns it has helps though.

The mini boss for Monarch Titan Zone act 1 was really annoying. I think it's suppose to be the same mini boss from S&K Death Egg Zone, and I don't know how you're suppose to hit it without getting hit constantly. It's even harder when playing as Knuckles since he doesn't have as high as a jump as Sonic and Tails.

If a Sonic Mania 2 comes out, I only want one stage from each of the five classic games.

Sonic 1: Star Light Zone. The only other great zone from that game besides Green Hill Zone. The other zones are stuff that should never come back. I don't know what needs to improved here. Maybe it has some stuff from Stardust Speedway.

Sonic 2: Mystic Cave Zone. I thought about Casino Night Zone first, but that one is too obvious. Maybe include the Hidden Palace Zone part for Knuckles only. Maybe include those annoying ghosts from Sonic & Knuckles.

Sonic CD: Collision Chaos Zone. If CNZ parts are used here, this place will be remembered better.

Sonic 3: Angel Island Zone. If anything, please think about using this more than Green Hill Zone. The first cut-scene in Sonic Mania was here. Like the last time with fire burning the place, how about ice or rain changing the atmosphere?

Sonic & Knuckles: Mushroom Hill Zone. Speaking of Hidden Palace Zone, how about a teleportation device that is between the two Hidden Palaces, and where you end up in the next part is here? This is where the Super Emeralds were first introduced in S3&K, using the big coin. I don't know what could possibly change here. Maybe burn this place too. Or they could have water here as well. How? The Master Emerald is stolen, and the island has fallen mid-way into the sea. It affects this part of the island too.

I want the rest of the game to be new areas, but have a bigger impact on the game, than 1/4th. Of course, the older stages get nice new touches... But, what about the new ones?

What stages do you think might be brought back, if any?

I played and beat this game last week after finally getting a Switch. It gets pretty much everything right about classic Sonic; they achieved that goal as well as anyone could have hoped. The only disappointment, and one that I knew about going in, is that so many of the levels are remixes. Sonic Mania 2 should strive to be a full-length Sonic game with all new level concepts, in my opinion. They should even go as far as to not have a Green Hill Zone or an obvious analogue, as so many recent Sonic games feel compelled to include. Sonic 3 started with Angel Island, & Knuckles started with Mushroom Hill. Both pleasantly distinct from the standard Sonic intro level, and two of my favorite levels from the series. I'd like to see them take that approach instead of Green/Emerald/Splash/etc. Hill Zone, and carry that originality through the rest of the game.

Playing as Mighty is gonna be dope. Can't wait.

I got bored, and asked myself:

Man, wouldn't it be awesome if we got another Sonic Generations, too? With both console and handheld games!

My thoughts on stages:

Sonic 1: Spring Yard Zone. Green Hill has been done to death. It's proto-Casino Night Zone! ... I don't know how it would translate in a Modern setting, but Sonic should be sent higher when he uses the homing attack on the balls. Might be a tricky first level... but, no more for Green Hill, and Marble and Labyrinth Zones don't mess well with Sonic designs.

Sonic 2: Emerald Hill Zone. Anotther Green Hill Zone!

Sonic CD: Quartz Quadrant. I thought about putting this here, as it's an earlier stage of the game. It's also time for Modern Sonic to go in a cave setting since forever, and make it good. No time posts, until the end of Act 1. A good mix of platforming and speed. As for why a Sonic 3 level isn't here, well...

Rival: Knuckles from Sonic & Knuckles. Because this has been a long time coming. Brainwashing... or just sheer stupidity.

Boss: Big Arm from Sonic 3. Beginner friendlier than the last bosses from 1 & Knuckles.

Sonic Adventure: Ice Cap or Icecap. Since it's also somewhat featured in Sonic 3, how about the first and second acts from each game in this one? (Modern's should start off with the avalanche. And should have more bad guys.)

Sonic Adventure 2: Metal Harbor. We need a little more ocean stages, and here's one that's one of the best in this game! Like QQ in Modern aesthetics.

Sonic Heroes: Rail Canyon. The Hedgehog Engine could finally make this PLAYABLE. Plus, Classic Sonic never has grinded rails, now that I think of it. *pushes Advance trilogy* Don't count.

Rival: G-Merl from Sonic Advance 3. Because I won't forget the Advance series.

Boss: Super Eggrobo Z from Sonic Advance 2. Let Engman use another cool mech that should rival the Death Egg Robot!

Shadow The Hedgehog: Westopolis. Crisis City being in Generations... so, let's improve upon a level from another bad game. Besides, some song from this game were featured in others. But, let's just have it about destroying Egg Robots. Nobody should remember the bad plot. REDEMPTION!

Sonic Unleashed: Dragon Road. For its majestic scenery. Classic Sonic might fight the best here because of what I said about QQ.

Sonic Colors: Aquarium Park. Because we need an end-game water level.

Rival: Blaze from Sonic Rush. Because last time had Silver for no reason.

Boss: Egg Wizard from Sonic Rush Adventure. How about we don't write off Eggman Nega for a little bit!

Sonic Lost World: Lava Mountain. The only revamp in the level mechanics. Make it work with Classic and Modern Sonic controls in mind. Not the horrible controls of the WiiU.

Sonic Mania: Mirage Saloon Zone. Classic Sonic does Act II, while Modern Sonic... like most of Classic Sonic stages in Generations, is entirely new.

Sonic Forces: Metropolitan Highway. *shrugs*

Rival: Mecha Sonic from Sonic & Knuckles with Egg Mobile-H from Sonic 4 Episode I.

Boss: Eggheart from Sonic 4 Episode II. Just make these two better than their last appearance.
