“The New Nintendo 2DS XL Pikachu Edition is a charming addition to the Nintendo 3DS line-up that is sure to delight Pokémon fans of all ages,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With a massive library of games, the Nintendo 3DS family of systems continues to deliver one-of-a-kind experiences for every type of gamer.”

There’s even more in store for Pokémon fans in 2018. Announced earlier today, the new video game Detective Pikachu will launch on March 23 in stores, in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS and at Nintendo.com at a suggested retail price of $39.99.

In this new adventure, players team up with a witty, tough-talking Pikachu to uncover clues, solve mysteries and encounter familiar faces from the Pokémon world. For the first time in a video game, this Pikachu can communicate with the player. With the help of Pikachu’s surprising voice, players can interact with other Pokémon in a whole new way as they embark on an adventure through the streets of Ryme City.

Also launching on March 23 is a special edition Detective Pikachu amiibo figure. This extra-large amiibo can unlock cutscenes if tapped in the Detective Pikachu game, revealing a combination of hilarious content that might also provide a hint. This same content can be accessed in the game without the amiibo, but tapping the amiibo will allow players to unlock content more quickly. The Detective Pikachu amiibo figure will be available at a suggested retail price of $29.99.

Fans who can’t get enough Pokémon can also download the classic 2D Game Boy Color game Pokémon Crystal when it launches in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS on Jan. 26 for only $9.99. The game, an expanded version of the popular Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver games, was the first in the Pokémon franchise to allow players to choose between a boy or girl playable character, and was the first game to introduce animations during Pokémon battles. The Nintendo 3DS version of the game is updated with wireless battling and trading, and is compatible with the Pokémon Bank app (annual service charge applies). Pokémon Crystal is now available for pre-purchase in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

I guess you get all the Episodes then.... cause as they stated (and as I remembered) it was an episodic title.

I'm rather hesitant to buy this as while the amiibo is cool and big. I just don't want to fork over a big amount over a amiibo that will only work on one game. Take for example Pokken Tournament (DX). They had two chances to at least implement the Smash Pokemon to do something in that game and they didn't do it. Support for Pokemon amiibo to do something has been nearly nonexistent.

That's true. Maybe for the new Pokemon main series games they will do some kind of amiibo support. But for that, instead of releasing so many Pokemon amiibo, they are better off just collaborating with the TCG ala e-reader using the amiibo brand.

As for the game and amiibo, I'll see how the reviews are for the game and I'll probably get the amiibo seeing as how I have most of the releases. I still have the Layton series to go through so I don't think I'll be getting the game right away if I wanted to. I have a $5 Best Buy coupon but expires beginning of March. :(

Meant to comment on this much much earlier, escaped me but I'm interested in getting this game and the amiibo counterpart. Also, I'm used to amiibo only being used in one game but then again in game where you can use any amiibo one like Yoshi Woolly World, Hyrule Warrior, BotW to still get some item from amiibo not related the game means not all amiibo is used in just one game.

Plus have any you guys seen the size of this thing compared to the Smash Pikachu?

That would explain the price besides popularity wise and such. Damn, that's big!

Imma name this amiibo Wattson, that's good one that was brought up here.

It's a little under double the size, for triple the price. No clue why they'd make this figure so big when there's almost zero detail to it.

Less than double the height, maybe, but it's definitely a lot more if you take all three dimensions into account.  If we take the same height ratio (source) and apply it to length and width, as well, we end up with a mass over 7x greater than the SSB Pikachu amiibo.  I feel like the extra cost is justified.

But yeah, it'd be better if Detective Pikachu had more detail.  Like, shit, couldn't they give him a vest or a notepad or something?
