Welcome to the official Spring 2017 Anime/Manga/Light Novel Discussion Thread! As the snow of winter fades away, the light of spring brings forth a new season of anime, ripe with long-sought sequels and promising new shows. Remember: You are free to discuss any and all anime, manga, light novel, or other Japanese media related content here, not just limited to what the current season has to offer!

New to seasonal anime?

New anime airs each season of the year at roughly these time intervals:
Winter (January-March)
Spring (April-June)
Summer (July-September)
Fall (October-December)

Each new season is typically covered by a multitude of sites that compile the upcoming shows into charts with summaries and information about each show. These charts are an easy way of catching a glimpse at what is probably going to air in the upcoming season. Occasionally, shows on these charts may be delayed to later seasons; for the most part, the seasonal charts are fairly accurate, so if you’re ever confused on what is airing, when it’s airing, or what it is, please check the charts below for any questions you may have!

Notable Seasonal Chart Sources:
http://anichart.net
http://neregate.com/blog/anime-charts/
http://livechart.me

Additionally, there are PV (Promotional Video) trailers that air before the start of each season, which actually show footage of the show. There may also be CM (Commercial) footage, but these tend to have only a few seconds of content by comparison. If I am able to find these, I will include them below.

Last, but certainly not least, the studio and staff that works on a show can be a very influential factor. Previous works done by the studio will be included as to give you an idea on what they’ve worked on, as will the staff involved.

Spring 2017 Anime Information and Preview:

Template Explanation:
Show information is covered by the following template:

Spoiler

Genre: The various genres of the show.
Studio: The studio or studios animating the show. Unknown means the studio has yet to be confirmed.
Staff: The major staff involved in the show. To make things simpler for you, only the Director, Series Composition/Script writer, Character Designer, and Music composer will be listed. Additionally, I will be covering up to the three most prolific voice actors for the show. If one of these is not listed, it means it has either not been announced or information about a specific position cannot be found. Unchanged means the staff is the same as the previous season or movie. Unknown means there is no staff information at this time.
PV: Any teasers or trailers that have been released of the show that I can find. CMs (Commercials) may also be listed here.
Synopsis: A brief summary of the show. Could be a few sentences, or even a paragraph or two!
Source: The source format that the anime is adapted from. Original means that it's new and not derived from any source, while other mediums listed signal that the anime is an adaptation (manga, video games, light novels, visual novels, and others are often sources that anime is adapted from).

Particular shows that I recommend giving a shot will have their titles highlighted in green. Due to the high quantity of anime being released, while I cover all full-lengthed TV anime, all shorts, movies, and OVAs/ONAs/Specials are covered by personally selected highlights instead of full coverage. Please refer to the sources section at the bottom of this preview for in-depth information on shows not covered here.

No Kyoto Animation work this season to satisfy my quality-production moe fixation.

In lieu of that, I may look in to the following:

  • Anonymous Noise, for being music-themed. Looks like a setup for a love triangle, but if it manages to be more than that, I can deal.
  • Atom: The Beginning. Production I.G. That's literally it.
  • Blame!, because I need to get over my aversion to 3DCG below a locked 30 frames per second so I can enjoy a damn good story.
  • Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, for the hell of it. Saw the film, and thought it was decent.
  • Clockwork Planet, for its visual style and setting. Premise reminds me of Chobits, what with the idea of a feminine automaton falling into some dude's lap. We'll see.
  • Hinako Note, because the idea of meeting a girl who eats books is just outlandish enough to raise an eyebrow. Also, because the "romance" label implies that it could be a yuri. Could just as well be moe fluff. Who knows, though?
  • The Rage of Bahamut franchise, because I saw the first episode of its previous season and thought it was fun, but didn't have the energy to commit to it at the time. It deserves a second chance.
  • Tsuki ga Kirei, solely for its visual style. I really like how sombre-looking it is. It sounds very generic and slice-of-life otherwise. I'm hoping it does more with itself than that, though.

Here's to a good season!

Why anti-streaming?

because i like to have my shows n shit available to watch whenever i want to

im totally chill with supporting the industry but my money isn't gonna go into streaming anime until its the only option y;

Streaming

a) Only works with a good, stable connection.

b) Is generally in very poor quality, even when at "higher" qualities

Having a show saved means being able to watch it anywhere at any time. There's no buffering and quality is higher. Plus assuming the file isn't hardsubbed, you can change and customize the subtitles all you want.

That said you should def. support the industry where you can.

If you put streaming next to, say, the same thing except a rip from HorribleSubs or the like at the same quality, I can guarantee you'd probably notice a difference. It's EXTREMELY easy to see even without comparison.

Oh, yeah. If you're talking about quality relative to a rip--and assuming the encoder for the latter didn't do a shit job--then obviously.

I'd still say that most streams are nevertheless very watchable, unless you're a really hyped videophile or something.
