Group Final Results:

Group A -

1. Johto- 9-0- Q
2. Raccoon City- 3-6 (9 pts. in GR)- Q
3. Avalar- 3-6 (8 pts. in GR)
4. Tortimer Island 3-6 (5 pts. in GR)

An old favorite and a dangerous new team have entered the league of 16. Sorry, TI. I thought you would be number one here.

Group B -

1. Sarasaland 9-0- Q
2. Earthdbz- 6-3- Q
3. Great Plateau- 3-6
4. Ostreinsburg 0-9

A former NWC(?) winner and a serious third party team have come up on top. I knew Ostreinsburg wouldn't cut it. It just wasn't GP's year, a semifinalist. At least I knew Sarasaland would do better. Still, Earthdbz showed me that rankings aren't always the right way to measure teams.

Group C -

1. Ylisse- 6-3 (9 pts. in GR)- Q
2. Kanto- 6-3 (6 pts. in GR)- Q
3. Earthsf 3-6
3. Inkopolis 3-6

A new force and a NWC winner has appeared once more. Sorry, I was way off with Earthsf. I'm glad at least that Ylisse was consistent.

Group D -

1. Tellius- 6-3 (7 pts. in GR)
2. Bionis- 6-3 (5 pts. in GR)
3. Nook Island- 3-6
3. Narshe 3-6

I was completely wrong about the Animal Crossing teams this time. Well, mostly. I knew they'd get far in their own group, but maybe not here. I knew Bionis had a decent chance, but I NEVER thought Tellius would be number 1 here.

Group E -

1. Mushroom Kingdom 9-0- Q
2. Shield- 6-3- Q
3. Popstar 3-6
4. Isle O Hags- 0-9

Oof with Popstar and Isle. Another NWC winner gone, and a semifinalist too. But, one of last year's finalists and a hugely popular MK return. At least Shield is doing better than I thought.

Group F -

1. Kongo Jungle- 6-3 (8 pts. in GR)- Q
2. Sylvealla- 6-3 (5 pts. in GR)- Q
3. Hyrule- 3-6
3. Valley of Bowser- 3-6

Hyrule's gone and out as well, but there's still hope with Koholint. Valley of Bowser ran out of luck. I knew Kongo Jungle and Sylvealla had a chance.

Group G -

1. Koholint- 9-0- Q
2. Green Hill Zone 6-3- Q
3. Archanea- 3-6
4. Alola- 0-9

At least Green Hill Zone lost one game. Koholint is still mad at them, I guess. And, I knew Alola wouldn't last long compared to Kanto for some time.

Group H-

1. Corneria- 9-0- Q
2. Skyworld- 6-3- Q
3. Outworld- 3-6
4. Epoch- 0-9

At least two of the Top 5 of the rankings of last round still made it in. Corneria's the only one to count on here. Poor Epoch. I knew Outworld maybe wouldn't have had a chance in the playoffs for too long. But, along with Tellius, Skyworld has got to be one of the biggest upset teams ever.

The Bracket: (I think, I don’t know how this works in this situation.)

Sarasaland
Raccoon City

Prediction- Sarasaland. No contest.

Mushroom Kingdom
Earthdbz

Prediction- Earthdbz. Though MK has the better W-L ratio, at least in the first group stages, Earthdbz was one of the top 16.

Koholint
Kongo Jungle

Prediction- Kongo Jungle. As much I like Koholint, Kongo Jungle fared better this year.

Corneria
Tellius

Prediction- Corneria. They’re not even done with this year.

Johto
Ylisse

Prediction- Ylisse. Just like the situation with KJ.

Bionis
Shield

Prediction- N/A. Seriously, this year will belong to them. Kind of hard to choose. This will be the closest game of the Knockout Round. For sure.

Syvlealla
Kanto

Prediction- Sylvealla. No hard feelings towards Kanto. The other team has just been more consistent.

Green Hill Zone
Skyworld

Prediction- Green Hill Zone. Sure, Skyworld got lucky, but Green Hill Zone defeated them once in their second match together. And GHZ was number one in their group together.

Quarterfinals:

Sarasaland vs. Earthdbz (Vengeance against MK!)

Prediction: Sarasaland. Their Group match proves it. Even if I think the latter has a better roster.

Koholint vs. Tellius (A tale of two swords!)

Prediction: Koholint. Again, Tellius has the better roster.

Johto vs. Shield (A triumph over RPGS!)

Prediction: Shield. Still, this is a rather close one. Both have very good rosters to boot.

Kanto vs. Green Hill Zone (90s nostsalgia!)

Prediction: Green Hill Zone. Out of the Top 5, they’re still here. But, they have equally great teams, so maybe it will be different.

Whew, it's been crazy with you absent for a little while. So happy you're back. Now I can finally rest easy knowing that I don't have to manage the final three rounds.

You’ve done a great job up to this point.  Knockout round bracket wasn’t exactly as FIFA would’ve done it but you’ve based everything on goal difference dating back to the regular season, so it worked very well.  I’ll take care of the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final from here.

Sucks that we have no fans in attendance at these matches.  Cameroon and Nigeria have done an admirable job hosting this event in a condensed and socially distant fashion.  Come to think of it, the matches coming quickly one after another in NWC 2020 is actually very similar to how the European leagues have concluded their seasons this year, playing 2/3 times a week instead of once like normal.

Sarasaland could end up the first team to repeat as NWC champion.  Kanto also has a chance to be the first team to win the title for the 2nd time.  All 6 of the other teams would win their first world title should they triumph.  Some of the remaining teams are on Cinderella type runs...I don’t think Koholint has ever won the Zelda league title.  I think the other teams have, though Tellius hasn’t won the Fire Emblem/Military league title in some years.

With matches taking place in empty stadiums due to the coronavirus pandemic, many fans aren't happy with the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon not allowing them to attend due to the virus. Some in Sarasaland are threatening to sue the ambassadors of the two host nations for failing to given them assurances to see their team play and are demanding an injunction to allow fans to attend the final, should Sarasaland reach that far, but the suit could easily be a class action case with fans of other teams wanting to join.

The complaint states that "the two nations, NAFA, and the NWC made no efforts to allow fans to attend at all when negotiations took place. Stupidity over a virus that isn't killing people in high percentages has replaced common sense and if fans see their team in the NWC Final, it will feel tainted on account of no fans in attendance. We seek to have this mistake overturned before it's too late."

Update: More weight has been put on this lawsuit as not only are the Sarasaland Soccer Federation joining the plaintiffs, but the other respective FAs of the seven other teams competing and also adding NAFA and the NWC organizers as defendants saying in a joint statement that "fans are the lifeblood of sporting events. To have them taken from us and having fake crowd noises on TV broadcasts is inferior compared to what we've had for years with noise coming from crowd themselves at the games."

The leagues are asking for a limit of 20K fans for the semifinals, third place and final, saying they plan to follow the social distance rules that are in place very closely.

Following the lawsuits filed by the FAs of Sarasaland, Johto, Kanto, Green Hill Zone, Earthdbz, Koholint, Tellius, and Shield, the NAFA has postponed the quarterfinal round of the Nintendo World Cup until at least Friday.

NAFA officials as well as NFF and FECAFUT, the national federations of Nigeria and Cameroon have reached out to FIFA for guidance.  FIFA in turn has reached out to the WHO and the CAS (court of arbitration for sport) for guidance as to whether the partial reopening of certain host sites in the two countries is doable.

It’s worth noting that neither Nigeria nor Cameroon was too heavily impacted by coronavirus compared to most of the industrialized world.  Nigeria has recorded around 42k total cases and 900 deaths, Cameroon even less with 17k cases and 400 deaths.  Only about 2500 active cases are currently within the two nations.  Given these numbers, this joint lawsuit might well succeed in some form

SSF officials released a statement following the postponement of the NWC quarterfinals to Friday, calling it "a smart move to allow all parties to work for a reasonable compromise. We recognize that a full capacity crowd is not in the best of interests due to the coronavirus pandemic which is why we want crowd limits that could be reasonable to ensure social distancing guidelines can be implemented in Nigeria and Cameroon, who have done great work in these tough conditions. We find it unfair that fans weren't allowed to attend initially and hope that they can support Sarasaland, and those of the other 7 remaining teams competing, in the remaining rounds."

There have been quite a few important meetings today between representatives of FIFA, NAFA, the WHO, NFF, FECAFUT, and the heads of the 8 federations representing the remaining teams in the tournament.  The situation has gotten so tense that the First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, and her Cameroonian counterpart Chantal Biya, both made statements to the media today expressing sympathy for those who had been excluded from stadiums during matches.  But Buhari and Biya also stressed that re-entry for fans must be done in a way that doesn’t risk any of the region’s major cities becoming a coronavirus hotspot.  Said Buhari, “Lagos is a metropolis of nearly 16 million people. You get a few cases into the wrong people or mix them into the general public, and that can multiply very quickly.”  Biya added, “our immigration authorities and military personnel have done their part to make sure people follow the rules and stay protected.  If not done properly, opening the stadiums could cause people to gather irresponsibly without safeguards and cause an unsafe situation.  Our sporting ministry is taking the advice of the WHO and our civil authorities and will decide how best to proceed.”

The expectation right now is that the NAFA, FECAFUT, and NFF will make a joint press conference tomorrow.  The quarterfinal matches are scheduled to take place in Garoua, Bafoussam, Uyo, and Abuja tomorrow.  Semifinals will take place in Lagos and Douala Saturday, with the 3rd place match and final to take place in Yaounde Sunday night.  The 3rd place contest will take place at the venerable Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, while the final will take place at the newly constructed Paul Biya Stadium.

Update - and how’s this?  Master Hand was asked if fans will be allowed into the stadiums tomorrow.  He said he didn’t know, but he does have reputable sources that say that the NAFA will quote, “absolutely not” be playing either the 2021 confederations cup or the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.  When asked why, Master Hand said that the NAFA will never host an event in a country the puts such a low value on human life, and moreover, that hosting the tournament there makes no economic sense because Nintendo doesn’t sell dick for products in Qatar.  This could potentially put the NAFA at odds with their human world counterpart, FIFA.  We’ll see if anything more substantive comes out on that in the next few days or weeks.

Following a day of heated discussion, the NAFA and the national federations have allowed reduced seating into the stadiums for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.  All fans who receive tickets and attend must follow strict mask wearing and distancing guidelines, traveling in groups of no greater than 4, and sitting in the specified seats in checkerboard formation in designated areas.  All people entering will be subject to temperature checks as well.  The concession and merchandise stands will be open, but all items will be purchased from outside glass encased zones and fed through the glass after electronic payment is rendered.

Maximum stadium capacity for these games has been set at 20k for the stadiums in Abuja, Lagos, Douala, and Yaounde, and 15k for the other venues which have smaller overall capacity to start with.  Allotment of tickets will be 25% to each of the competing teams and 50% to local fans.

These guidelines are essentially the same guidelines that the teams themselves have been subjected to at their training facilities throughout the tournament.

Nintendo World Cup 2020 Quarterfinals - National TV Gamecast

Sarasaland 3-0 Earthdbz - Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja - Wario 35', Dragonzamasu 45', Daisy 65'

Koholint 2-1 Tellius - Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo - Richard 10', Elincia 67'(pen), Marin 89'

Johto 2-2 Shield - Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua - Whitney - 12', T'Challa 18', Gomorrah 57', Suicine 85'

Green Hill Zone 5-3 Kanto - Kouekong Stadium, Bafoussam - Silver 8', Mewtwo 15', Tails 20', Sonic 41', Gary Oak 61', Pikachu 70'(pen), Knuckles 82', Shadow 90'+3

11pm - The matches kick off!

8' - Green Hill Zone has a scarred history of making it far only to get beat...the biggest scar of all being the 2018 final where they lost to Sarasaland.  They're a step closer to redemption as Silver hits a bullet from 25 yards past Mr Mime for 1-0

10' - Early goal in Uyo as Richard hits a ripper of his own from nearly 30 yards out and knocks it in off the bottom of the crossbar.  What a strike that is.  1-0 to Koholint.

12' - Maybe the fans' return is inspiring the players, as we are seeing some golazos early on!  This one comes from Whitney, who rounds the ball around Black Widow before firing a cannon shot from 25 yards into the top right corner.  No chance for Hulk to save that.  1-0 to Johto

15' - It didn't take Kanto long to come back with an equalizer.  They won a corner down the right, and Ash's corner kick is headed home by Mewtwo.  Set pieces have killed Green Hill Zone in the past due to the fact that they are one of the shorter teams in terms of height, and Kanto definitely is using that to their advantage.

18' - Shield now come back with an equalizer.  A brilliant pass from the midfield from Captain America finds T'Challa, who timed his run perfectly and ends up 1v1 with Blissey, and the man from Wakanda beats her for 1-1.

20' - Green Hill Zone score a second within 20 minutes.  This time its Blaze who plays a great ball to release Shadow down the left, he cuts inbetween two defenders and shoots.  Mime makes a great initial save but Tails is right place right time to knock home the rebound for 2-1.

35' - We went a while without a goal in Abuja, but when it came it was a delightful team goal from the defending world champions.  The ball touched Tokotoko, Dragonzamasu, Totomesu, Waluigi, Daisy, and then Wario before he hit a low shot into the bottom left past Majim Buu to put Sarasaland ahead 1-0.

41' - Green Hill Zone are now 3-1 up.  Tails makes a ridiculous run from nearly the midfield circle following a giveaway by Brock, and he forces Mime to come before tapping across to Sonic who buries it into the empty net.  Team hedgehog is rolling in Bafoussam.

45' - Right on the stroke of halftime Sarasaland double their advantage!  Daisy wins a corner kick down the left, then takes the corner and Dragonzamasu rises highest to head it home to make it 2-0.

57 ' - We went a while after halftime without any scoring, but Shield has taken the lead from behind.  Black Widow feeds Iron Man, who taps backward to Scarlet Witch, whose shot caroms unluckily off the post but Gomorrah gets to it before any Johto defender can clear and her effort finds the net for 2-1.

61' - Kanto isn't giving up yet.  Gary freakin Oak tries an audacious effort from just inside 30 yards and it flies in off the right post.  Eggman didn't even move for it, then puts up his hands as if to say "well what did you want me to do about that?"  Oak kicks out the corner flag in celebration, which predictably earns him a card.

65' - It really looks as though the world champs are home free now.  Totomesu beats two Earthdbz defenders down the right, and crosses for Daisy, who's unmarked just outside the penalty spot.  I mean really...you're going to leave the best player on the best team unmarked from 12 yards?  Swish.  3-0.

67' - Tellius has tied up the game with Koholint!  Ike holds up the ball about 35 yards out and finds Elincia, who strides into the penalty area but is brought down by Tarin, who is yellow carded for his transgression but more importantly a penalty is given.  Elincia steps up against Master Stalfos and gets him to go the wrong way.  1-1.

70' - Just like that, another penalty is given!  On a Kanto corner kick, Pikachu tries to go agility to head the ball in but he is held down harshly by Knuckles and the referee points to the spot, and gives Knuckles a yellow card as well.  Pikachu does something incredible on his penalty, charging up his toward-B diving headbutt but stopping short of the ball, fooling Eggman who dove before Pikachu calmly kicked the ball into the opposite side of the net.  Eggman is furious and complains that it must be retaken but VAR shows Pikachu never completely stopped his forward momentum.  The goal stands and its all tied in Bafoussam!

73' - Well now this could be big...Jasmine found Morty who fired a throughball to Typhlosion, who looked to be through on goal but he was brought down from behind just outside the area by Jessica Jones.  She's red carded and ejected.  The resultant free kick is over the bar but Johto is now up a player the rest of the way.

76' - And now another red card comes out on a very similar play.  Amy Rose releases Sonic as Green Hill Zone hits Kanto on the counterattack, and Brock decides to slide tackle Sonic harshly just outside the area.  Sonic is furious and nearly squares up to fight Brock but thinks better of it.  The rock type gym leader is red carded and Kanto is down to 10.  The free kick is saved by Mime.

82' - Green Hill Zone takes advantage of the man advantage.  After nearly 5 straight minutes of possession, Blaze boots a useful ball into the mixer and Shadow flicks in on to the back post where Knuckles slides in and applies the finishing touch.  4-3 to GHZ

85' - And the man advantage now pays off for Johto, who win a corner down the left.  Faulkner takes the corner and it's Suicine that beats the defender to it and knocks it home to tie the match at 2-2

89' - Oh this is incredible!  Dethl, who's scored several late goals for Koholint in this tournament, makes a good run and breaks away as the defender mistimes his challenge.  The keeper is forced to come way out of the box and ends up fouling Dethl as he tries to get the shot away.  With the referee playing the advantage, Grim Creaper pounces on the ball, passes it to Richard, who hits a looping cross to the back post to Marin, who puts it home!  2-1 Koholint with just a few minutes left!

90'+3 - Kanto win a corner with under two minutes left, and they decide to throw all 11 players forward including the keeper.  The corner is taken by Ash, but Eggman comes all the way out of the six yard box to punch the ball clear, and its a sprint down the field as Silver booms it forward to Sonic, who then finds Shadow, who hits a shot from 55 yards that hits the empty net to clinch victory for Green Hill Zone.

12:30am - End of regulation time.  Sarasaland, Koholint, and Green Hill Zone win and go through to the semifinals.  Johto and Shield now going to extra time.

120’ - with no goals in extra time, Johto and Shield go to penalties in Garoua. Which keeper, Hulk or Feraligatr can keep more shots out and send their side to a semifinal date with Green Hill Zone?

The fans from Sarasaland who filed the lawsuit initially Wednesday night released a statement just now calling the decision to allow fans of the 8 remaining teams to see them in the NWC "a win for common sense and decency," adding:

"Many of us who had meetings with our legal representatives prior to filing the lawsuit came to the conclusion that pushing for a full capacity allowance was out of the question given the pandemic in the human world so we knew that we wanted some fans to be able to attend. The fact that we as fans of those competing can at least attend one game depending on how teams do on the pitch going forward is wonderful and we do intend to follow the guidelines put in place to ensure we don't bring the disease back to our worlds."

The statement also said that had the NWC been in a developed nation like the US or anywhere in Europe that is still dealing with high cases of the coronavirus they quote, "would not have done such a lawsuit because of the high number of cases in developed countries, especially if this was in the US this year."
