  1. The Kanex line of upscalers seems to be the most affordable solution to getting the best image quality out of your retro consoles. This is a negative review about the 720p model shown above. However, considering the rave reviews on their other models, I could have just gotten a lemon or gotten the wrong model. I hope that this is a case of me trying to save a few bucks thinking that both models were similar (the 720p model is $68, the 1080p/4K model is around $99, both do Composite and S-Video). That being said, this model is underwhelming and not worth the $68 I paid for it. After having tried everything to get this piece of shit to work correctly I have given up on this model. It's not very impressive and any visual gain is very minimal. It also gives a "checker board" look which is common on many Upscalers that do a shit job. This could also be due to my TV (55 inch Sharp Aquos) but it seems that the reviews on this specific model aren't as high as the 4K (I know reviews aren't always right but it's all I got to go off of). I tested this on my GameCube and on my N64 and the picture quality was not the greatest. That being said, I didn't notice any lag but I also didn't mess around with it enough to test for any noticeable lag (I was too disappointed in the device to give a shit). For those who don't know the technical side of the N64, it only outputs in 240p and has built in anti-aliasing. The anti-aliasing creates a blurred and pixelated image and looks as if someone smeared Vaseline all over your TV. I bought this specifically for my N64 and up until now, the only real solution for the N64 as far as getting the best image quality is to either have it modded for HDMI or buy a mini Framemeister Upscaler. Both would set you back several hundred or more and I am trying not to go that route. I don't need "The Best" I need "Good." I do mess around with video game capturing/editing which is one of my hobbies. I take image quality pretty seriously but I am also not rich. I am not trying to cut my N64 apart and I am not spending $300-$400 on a fucking Framemeister. If people have that kind of money to throw at one, that is awesome and more power to you. I am always on the lookout for new technologies or affordable solutions to get the best out of my systems. Unfortunately, this is not what I expected and is going straight back to Amazon. I do have a Kanex Pro VGA Adapter that I got awhile back for the Dreamcast and that thing is truly awesome unlike this piece of shit. Another problem I ran into with this upscaler is that it forces your TV into 16:9 aspect ratio which is horrible for retro games. My TV is capable of 4:3 through the TV menu but the strange thing is that it disables the option for me to put it in "Side Bar" and only allows for "Full Screen." I thought that was weird and I also think that is pretty shitty. I have already ordered the upgraded version of this that apparently allows for scan lines, has a scaling option for different aspect ratios, and has even more solid reviews than the 720p version. I will post a full review with side by side video showing regular Composite to S-Video through the 4K version when I get it, but this has been nothing but a headache and a huge waste of my time thus far. Hopefully the 4K version is what the reviews were talking about. I am not expecting miracles, I understand that the N64 has problems on HDTVs, but I am also am not expecting glitches and weird artifacts to show up. The only good thing about this so far is I didn't notice any lag, so hopefully the new box fixes a lot of the issues I am having. I know I am not the only collector of retro games on here and I know there is interest in affordable solutions. However, this just isn't it for now.
  2. For the past several years I have been trying like hell to find a solution that won't break the bank to make my N64 playable. For those who are really hardcore about their N64, you probably already know that the N64 looks like smeared shit on an HDTV. It is so bad on my Sharp Aquos 1080p set that I can't enjoy any of my N64 titles. The closest I have gotten is Episode 1 Racer with the fucking expansion mode on and even that leaves a lot to be desired. For those who don't know, basically the N64 outputs at 240p and has anti-aliasing. This really fucks with the picture quality on modern HDTVs due to the N64 not being designed to run in HD resolution; there is very little that can be done about it. There are many upscalers out there but most are shitty ass ones they sell on Amazon for 20-30 bucks that have all sorts of issues, biggest one being latency. I came across this one upscaler that is a bit pricier than one of those basic shit ones for $20-$30, but nowhere near the range of what a Framemeister will cost you. Its a Kanex Pro S-Video upscaler and there seems to be 2 of them that the company sells. The first one is a compact box that looks like one of those A/V converter boxes that you would use for those weird ass Hotel TVs that don't have any fucking A/V outputs (always thought that was really fucking weird). It claims to upscale to 4K through S-Video and Composite and has great reviews and goes for $99.99. There is another one that they sell that is very similar to it that goes for $67.99 and upscales to 720p through S-Video and Composite. I Was pretty torn between the both of them since my TV is a 1080p set. I was wondering if anyone else had experience with these specific upscalers. I should be getting mine in the next week or so along with an S-Video cable that I got for cheap on ebay (I made sure it was one of the non-splitter kind that outputs true S-Video, so hopefully I don't get duped on that). As a big fan of N64 myself, all I want is to be able to play the fucking games (and possibly record on my elgato HD). Hopefully this works but I won't know for a week or two when I get the upscaler and S-Video cables I ordered. I will do a full review on it with comparison shots through my elgato capture card on whether or not this is an affordable solution for those who are serious about image quality on their N64 through an HDTV. Not sure which game I am gonna do first but I am leaning toward Conker's Bad Fur Day as my first play through if this upscaler makes the image quality bearable.

  8. So a fan/modder is attempting to remake Link's Awakening though hacking Ocarina of Time, and he just released the first teaser trailer: Ocarina of Time is my favorite 3D Zelda and Link's Awakening is my favorite 2D Zelda, so on the surface this would seem like a dream come true for me. The cinematic tone of the trailer, the amount of original content being added, and the idea of a "deeper, darker, original, dynamic, more inspired storyline" almost completely killed my interest in the project, though. Part of what makes Link's Awakening so brilliant is its goofy, silly charm with a steadily building undercurrent of melancholy and the questions it raises as you continue your quest. It isn't particularly deep or dark, but it strikes a delicate balance where its more serious themes are presented with enough subtlety that they take a while to sink in, and when they finally do, it has so much impact because the overall look and tone of the game is bright and colorful. I think the game is pretty near perfect the way it is, and would much rather see them do a faithful recreation than a reimagining with a new story. What are your thoughts?
