  2. http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/picross-3d-wii-u For North America tomorrow. I wonder if they'll do anything with the downloadable puzzles or just leave those behind in this release.
  3. Although many Nintendo fans have moved on to the latest system there are still a few games slated for release on the Wii U, including World to the West from Rain Games, releasing on May 5th. This action puzzler is set in the same universe as the developer's previous game, Teslagrad, but instead of 2D exploration World to the West features top-down 3D environments. You play as four characters each with unique skills and abilities that they'll need to use to uncover all of the secrets found in World to the West. Screenshots: *********************************************************** I played a short demo of the game at PAX West which was pretty fun. They had a short segment for each character available but I only played one, though I got to watch other people play through the other parts which also looked good. I also really enjoyed Teslagrad so I'm glad to see more from Rain Games.

  5. I'm honestly surprised no one made a topic about this since we haven't seen anything from the Switch's eShop until now. This details what pops up when you come out of sleep mode or when you turn on the Switch (Featured News), what's in the News tab, the eShop interface, features and how to merge your eShop wallets from the 3DS and/or Wii U. The eShop interface reminds me of the eShop area on Nintendo.com look-wise. I could see it changing in the future when VC games hit. Discuss or no?

Also new this week: COLOR CUBES (Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS) Koi DX (Nintendo eShop on Wii U) Mega Maze (Nintendo eShop on Wii U) Snowball (Nintendo eShop on Wii U) Toby: The Secret Mine (Nintendo eShop on Wii U)
  17. http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/star-fox-64-wii-u The classic returns for the Wii U Virtual Console in North America tomorrow!
  18. Toby: The Secret Mine from developer Lukas Navratil and publisher Headup Games sends players through a shadowy world of hazards and puzzles as Toby struggles to free his friends. The game draws heavily from similar puzzle-platformers, and while there are a few missteps on the journey the adventure is engaging, albeit brief. There's no dialogue or text in the game so the story is told only through the visuals, and even then the plot is pretty thin: invaders ransack Toby's town and kidnap most of the villagers, so Toby sets off to rescue them. There's really no other depth to the story than that, but Toby: The Secret Mine does a fine job of establishing atmosphere instead. There may not be any detailed explanations for them but the environments drive the sinister feeling of the game as Toby explores an increasingly complex mine in order to find his fellow villagers. Simple silhouettes against brightly colored backgrounds creates a beautiful but haunting world for Toby to explore, and the music, though repetitive at times, completes the melancholy yet dangerous atmosphere. Toby: The Secret Mine follows in the footsteps of other puzzle-platformers such as Limbo that blend simple puzzles with light platforming elements. As you move through the mine you're constantly confronted with obstacles such as pits, spikes, or arrow traps, so you have to use your wits to get around them, whether it's by hitting the right switch, activating a helpful minecart, or just finding a secret path around the hazard. The puzzles themselves are decent–most are fairly straightforward, and often require careful observation of your surroundings. There's also a good variety of puzzles too, so you never feel like you're doing the same thing twice. Each new area poses new challenges, and the game does a solid job of leading you into them naturally. Occasionally you'll encounter enemies, but once you get past their traps they'll run away again and the chase resumes. The downside is that some of those environmental clues are a little too obscure for their own good. Too often a solution is hidden merely by the fact that the game uses a heavy black shadow art style, so foreground and background are hard to tell apart. This is especially true of the hazards like spikes which truly are designed to trick you when there's almost no indication of them. Many of your deaths and retries will be thanks to these tricks, and after a dozen of them it feels like the game is messing with you. Thankfully though, Toby respawns pretty instantaneously, and there are frequent checkpoints. So while many deaths feel cheap they're not designed to frustrate, and it doesn't matter if you die a few times as you test the waters. The controls in Toby: The Secret Mine are simple with just a button to jump and another to activate switches or buttons, in addition to movement controls. It's all simple to learn but the slow, stiff movement does hamper the platformer aspects of the game a bit. Toby isn't exactly lithe and moves pretty slowly with a sense of weight on him. When all you're doing is hitting switches and jumping on boxes this doesn't seem like a problem, but when you have to move quickly to dodge a spike trap or outrun a monster it makes the game feel sluggish. Combined with the issue of not seeing important objects due to the heavy black visuals and you'll sit through more than a few deaths just because one jump was a tiny bit off. Toby has no special abilities so you'll need to be clever to get through hazards like lasers. Even with a few trial and error deaths, Toby: The Secret Mine is a pretty short game, and can be finished in only two or three hours. Ironically there aren't many secrets to uncover in this game, save for one. Twenty six of your villager friends are kidnapped, and throughout the game you can find and free each one. Some are obviously placed in your path but many are well hidden, sometimes completely separate from any switches needed to progress, so you have to keep an eye open for them. Although there's a level select system after finishing the game there's no indication of which levels still have villagers that you've missed, so if you do want to find them all you'll probably need to replay the entire game. Toby: The Secret Mine takes a tried and true game genre and makes a solid little adventure out of it. The puzzles offer plenty of varied challenges to keep you on your toes, while the platformer sections provide more fast-paced action. Unfortunately the game has its share of annoyances, including a sluggish sense of movement and a reliance on cheap deaths, but players looking for a quick, enjoyable puzzle-platformer will be satisfied with this one. Rating: 6 out of 10 Stars Toby: The Secret Mine releases on January 19th on the Wii U eShop for a price of $9.99 / €9,99 / £7.99. Review copy provided by the publisher
  19. Just like last year, the light release schedule for the Wii U was somewhat softened by the stellar eShop releases of 2016. And even if the Wii U wasn't desperate for games, there were some great digital titles this year that nicely fill out any Wii U owner's library. The 3DS received a few solid eShop releases as well, not least because of the slightly more common practice of cross-buy that gives players two versions of a game for the price of one. It's doubtful whether or not this promotion will continue with Nintendo's next system, especially if the Switch eventually absorbs handheld gaming as well, but it has been a great deal when available. But first, an honorable mention: Runbow: Satura's Space Adventure. The only reason this isn't part of the main list is because it's an expansion rather than a standalone game, but Satura's Space Adventure is undeniably one of the best purchases you can make on the eShop this year. It is yet more great content for Runbow (my favorite eShop game of last year) and adds unique new challenges for single and multiplayer. Earlier this year Runbow received a retail disc release on the Wii U, and sometime next year the game will also make the leap to the New 3DS digitally and physically. Considering how fun Runbow has been, I can't wait to see what else 13AM Games cooks up in the future. 10. Pirate Pop Plus (Wii U, New 3DS) Speaking of 13AM Games, the developer also got into the publishing game by releasing Pirate Pop Plus from developer Dadako. This throwback to Game Boy graphics takes a simple, repetitive premise and manages to make it oddly addictive. Granted there isn't a huge amount of depth to the game, but once you start playing it's hard to put down, especially on the New 3DS as this is a perfect game to play for a few minutes then pop back into your pocket. 9. BoxBoxBoy! (3DS) A sequel to last year's BoxBoy!, BoxBoxBoy! brings Qbby back for another selection of fiendishly clever puzzles. And this isn't just more of the same content: being able to create two sets of boxes allows for a whole new set of challenges without feeling too foreign to any veteran players. Like everything from developer HAL Laboratory the simple art style is utterly charming, and you'll never once feel like the game is missing anything by relying on a mostly black-and-white color scheme. Instead, the simple graphics allows the ingenious puzzle design to shine through. With a third BoxBoy game announced for release in Japan in early next year we're not quite finished with Qbby which is fine by me. 8. Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty (Wii U) It was a bit late coming to the Wii U but Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! is worth it whether you've played the original Abe's Oddysee or not. This unconventional puzzle-platformer is as entertaining now as it was in 1997 when the original game was released. Although the platformer side is a bit rough at times the puzzles are great, with plenty of situations that put you in that delicate balancing act of "I'm not sure if this is going to work but here we go anyway." Its dark comedic elements give the game a charm not seen too often these days, with an old-school sense of difficulty to match. 7. Shadow Puppeteer (Wii U) Asymmetric gameplay was the buzzword around the time the Wii U was first released thanks to the difference between one player using the Gamepad and the others using Wii remotes. Shadow Puppeteer probably isn't quite what people had in mind when they bandied about the term, but its unconventional approach to co-operative platforming certainly makes it stand out. With one player in a 3D environment and the other player in a 2D one, this game that demands solid teamwork, and when things start working smoothly it's wonderfully satisfying. Although the game can also be played solo the real charm in Shadow Puppeteer is in discovering a new way to play together. 6. Picross 3D Round 2 (3DS) Picross has enjoyed a steady stream of releases 3DS with the Picross-e games, but it seems Nintendo is still happy to experiment with more unconventional approaches to the number-based puzzle game. Like its 2D counterparts Picross 3D Round 2 is almost worryingly addictive. It genuinely feels impossible to play just one puzzle, you'll always be compelled to play a little more. And what higher praise can there be for a puzzle game than that? Round 2 adds a few new features over the 2010 DS title Picross 3D but they almost don't matter: just having more Picross to play is worth the admittedly high $30 price. 5. Mutant Mudds Super Challenge (Wii U, 3DS) "Super Challenge" is not an exaggeration: this game has some of the most frustratingly pixel perfect platforming you'll find this year. So it's particularly surprising to find how much fun the game is even as you fail over and over. As brutal as the game can be, it's also incredibly satisfying when you overcome a section you've been having trouble with, and the game at least gives you checkpoints to give you some breathing room (although masochists have the option of turning them off entirely). More importantly though, Super Challenge isn't just a collection of ridiculously difficult platforming levels. It's a collection of exquisitely crafted platforming levels that cleverly challenge everything you know about the genre. It's an ode to 2D game design meant for all of us that have spent countless hours with our thumbs glued to a controller in order to perfect every level in a Mario game. It's a love letter to a classic genre, and it's awfully fun to play as well. 4. Tumblestone (Wii U) In a world saturated with match-3 puzzle games, Tumblestone makes the genre feel fresh again. The addictive puzzles are complemented by a wide variety of tricky modifiers that will have your head spinning as you try to keep up. And if multiplayer is more your speed, Tumblestone has three great modes for local play as well as an online mode. In short, Tumblestone is everything a puzzle game should be: simple to learn, difficult to master, and perfect for quick game sessions solo or with friends. 3. Jotun: Valhalla Edition (Wii U) As 3D graphics continue to become more and more realistic some developers have looked backward to revive classic pixel art. Jotun takes it even further by recreating the hand-drawn animation that characterized all cartoons 30+ years ago. The resulting artwork is absolutely gorgeous and wonderfully unique. Jotun isn't just a pretty face though, and features some intensely difficult boss encounters with towering enemies where you are literally a speck on the screen next to them. The exploration sections of the game are, by comparison, a bit less lively, but the beautiful scenery combined with an incredible soundtrack gives the game one of the most enchanting atmospheres of any eShop game this year. 2. Axiom Verge (Wii U) With the amount of work and detail that goes into games these days there is usually an entire team working diligently to perfect every aspect of the experience. So it's particularly shocking that Axiom Verge, created solely by Tom Happ, is not just an intricately designed Metroidvania game, it's an excellent Metroidvania game too. The open exploration, the massive boss fights, the thrill of gradually uncovering all of the many secrets that the game has to offer: Axiom Verge truly captures the best of classic 2D games. It has some of their frustrations as well, but as a whole this is one game that no Metroid fan will want to miss. 1. Severed (Wii U, 3DS) Guacamelee! was an infectiously fun game, filled with brightly colored scenery and rife with humor, even going so far as to hide a few meme Easter eggs in the game. Severed, also from developer Drinkbox Studios, manages to take the complete opposite tone and make a game that is just as compelling. Here the bright colors and rough hewn shapes take on a sinister and eerie appearance, while the first-person perspective lends a more personal touch to Sasha's quest to rescue her family and take revenge for the loss of her arm. The combat is fast and intense–it's easy to lose your step in the almost rhythmic flow of combat–which makes every encounter a satisfying duel. Most importantly, there is a beautiful balance between simplicity and depth in this game that makes all of its varied elements work together in harmony. Severed stitches together varied aspects of game genres–RPG leveling up abilities, Metroidvania exploration as new paths open with new items, touch-based combat on the Gamepad's screen–and creates one haunting, mesmerizing adventure.
