  1. Hello, all. I decided to migrate my thread over from Nsider2 since I don't frequent there much anymore, and I do like to keep it updated whenever I find the time to work on it. A thread like this is a good way for me to keep the whole project neatly organized in one place. Some Backstory: Pictured above is one of my oldest personal possessions, a sketchbook that was given to me when I was in 4th grade. Somehow I've managed to hold on to this damn thing for over 20 years. Held within this ratty, dinghy, taped up, old book, with a shoe box for a front cover no less; are the drawings of an eight-year-old's obsession with Mega Man. Seriously, for about two years whenever I drew something, which was fairly often, it was in this book and it was always Mega Man related. Hmm, I sure hope that was healthy behavior. I started out by drawing some doodles of existing Robot Masters and characters from Mega Man 6, since I was playing that at the time. But I quickly moved on to the Characters, Weapon, Armors, Vehicles and Mavericks of the X series, which I had always preferred. But before I knew it, I had already finished X and X2, X3 wasn't even out yet (Yeah, that's how long ago this was). I had so much fun drawing all that stuff I didn't want to stop, so I made up my own. From X3 all the way up to X9, I made up dozens of vehicles and armor upgrades, numerous forms for the undying Sigma, countless weapons and over a hundred characters. The Plan: Sometime ago, I decided it might be be fun to go through my old Mega Man sketch book, and pick out the eight "best" Maverick designs, or at least the ones with the most potential, and update them. Try to make them look somewhat cool, or at the very least like they actually belong in a Mega Man X game. Not exactly an easy task considering there are some real clunkers in there, like Ramming Ram and Gatling Goose. Mmm, that's the work of a master wordsmith right there (and you thought Wave Spider and Bomb Gecko, in the picture up above, were stupid). I do like to challenge myself somewhat though. So I figured why not make 16 Bit Super Nintendo sprites to match? Why not animate them? I've never really done pixel art or animations before (outside of flip books). It'd be a good learning experience, right? Yeah, expect it's the most time consuming and tedious part. But I digress. Now for the uninitiated, Mavericks are basically anthropomorphized, robotic animals paired with a property; typically an element like "Flame" or "Storm", but it can also be something more abstract like "Overdrive" or "Wheel". It sounds contrived and silly, but in my opinion, that's what makes designing these guys so interesting. You have to keep within the fairly simple stylized look of the Mega Man X series while trying to preserve the personality of the animal you've chosen and convey their property...properly... You can sometimes really surprise yourself with what you come up with. Just a quick heads up, these bios are going to be a bit dorky to the unaccustomed, but I'm trying to stay as true to the source material as possible, especially the Super Nintendo era, and that includes the original literature. As a point of Reference, this is Morph Moth from the Super Nintendo game Mega Man X2. A little dated perhaps, but I would like to think there's a timeless charm. Basically this is what I'm trying to emulate, both the artwork and the spriting style. And now that all that is finally out of the way. Let's get to it. Please Note: Some of the 16 Bit Mocks up below are at a lower frame rate, roughly 10 frames per second, than my current work. I didn't know how to increase the FPS of Gifs at the time and so the older ones are going to appear a bit choppy. I have every intention of updating them, but I hope you'll excuse them in the meantime. The Galloping Thunder-crash Once a member of 17th Elite Unit, along with his older brother Flame Stag. Renowned among his fellow hunters for his immense fighting skills and incredible speed. However once he heard of his brother's destruction at the hand's of X, he went AWOL and has not been seen since... Height: 7ft Weight: 435lb Power: 3500rp Speed: 11000rp Weapon: Twin Bolt The Incinerating Maestro A junk disposal reploid who likes to sing and build small mechanloids from spare parts, who apparently also has a bit of an obsession with insects judging from their designs. One day he suddenly locked down his salvage yard and converted it into a massive stronghold. Concerned about this strange behavior the Maverick Hunters have him under close observation. Height: 8.3ft Weight: 746lb Power: 5500rp Speed: 2100rp Weapon: Ignition Drone The World Shaking Titan It's unknown where this massive reploid came from. He simply appeared one day walking (literally) through a Maverick Hunter Base. Though he wasn't very fast, there was little the hunters could do to stop his approach, their weapons seemingly having no effect at all. According to reports he completely ignored everyone around him, never speaking a word. Stopping briefly to check a monitor, an then continue walking, unhindered, towards the south. It was decided it would be better not to pursue the target for now, given it's apparent strength. Height: 14.8ft Weight: 7,092lb Power: 15300rp Speed: 400rp Weapon: Giga Hammer The Celestial Hunter A famous nuclear engineer with a passion for astrology, who dreamed of making a star. After decades of research he created a machine called the celestial reactor which he believed was capable of making that dream come true. Though it showed promise initially, the reactor simply wouldn't produce anything that was stable. Unfortunately, years of constant exposure have taken their toll, and he doesn't have much longer to live. Desperate, he has repurposed his own failing body as a new celestial reactor, convinced he knows what he been doing wrong and will show the heavens the brilliance of his star. Height: 9.5ft Weight: 432lb Power: 8700rp Speed: 4760rp Weapon: Starlight Seeker The Amaranthine Reaper A maverick infamous for his intense hatred of humans and preference for underhanded, "cowardly" battle tactics. Yet feared for his masterfully honed skills and deadly precision. The last time he surfaced from the shadows was several years ago when he led Sigma's forces to Magna Centipede. In fact, it was Earwig who ended up taking down the elite 0th Special unit Hunter, after he had exhausted himself working through all of Sigma's men. Though Earwig was never particularly loyal to Sigma, seeing the alliance as more of a convenience then anything else, he eagerly leapt at the opportunity to dispose of one of his most loathed rivals, and one of only a precious few he actually considered an equal in his craft. Height: 6ft Weight: 392lb Power: 5800rp Speed: 9000rp Weapon: Grip Ripper The Noisy Serpent An ex-member of the water-based 18th units. Barracuda was never really popular among his fellow hunters, mainly due to his obnoxious personality, tendency to blare loud music, and just being plain hard to work with. In spite of this he was often relied upon for his expertise with sonar, and "sound based" weaponry. Most of which he developed himself. Barracuda was last seen when the dreadnought he was stationed on sank without warning killing all on board. Since Barracuda's was the only body not to be recovered, and the investigation of the wreck determined the haul was ripped apart by a massive shock-wave, it's presumed that he was more than likely responsible. Height: 7.9ft Weight: 346lb Power: 6000rp Speed: 8500rp Weapon: Blast Echo ???? ???? Rough Sketches:
