  11. Instead of the usual lists of my favorite games of the year I thought I'd change things up a bit with a whole awards list for the best titles of 2017, chosen exclusively by me. "But Eliwood," you say. "Isn't this essentially exactly the same as the previous lists, just with a different title and now you don't have to rank your favorite games?" To that I say: quiet you. With the launch of the Switch, 2017 has been an absolutely incredible year for Nintendo fans. Not only have we seen some fantastic entries in beloved franchises, we've gotten a consistent stream of excellent indie and eShop releases to fill out the year. If you played the Switch as much as I did this year you've been busy indeed with one fantastic game after another, and this list doesn't even contain every single top-quality game released in 2017, just some of the ones I played. As far as launch years go, this one is hard to beat, and I look forward to what Nintendo has in store for the Switch's future. Best Multiplayer Game: Splatoon 2 Nintendo is starting off the first year of the Switch with several of its biggest IPs, including their most recent smash hit, Splatoon. This unusual take on third-person shooters is just as addictive on the Switch, especially with the new co-op focused mode Salmon Run (which is still sadly limited to specific times, but is always fun to play). More stages, more weapons, more gear—for the most part Splatoon 2 is simply more of what fans loved of the first game, though for the most part that's enough. Online battles are just as frantic and fun, and the recently released Clam Blitz adds a fresh take on the more strategy-focused ranked battle modes. Splatoon 2 is only slowly addressing some of the annoying quirks of the first game—a recent update finally allows players to switch equipment without exiting the multiplayer lobby entirely—but if Splatfests are any indication the squid spirit is just as strong as it was on the Wii U. Best Co-op/"Oops I Accidentally Just Killed You" Game: Nine Parchments For a game that is meant to be cooperative, it sure is easy to kill your teammates in Nine Parchments. But that's half of the fun in this Gauntlet-style wizarding adventure for up to four players. The other half is the variety of spells that promises huge replay value, since your approach to each battle can vary wildly depending upon which spells you have available. Although the game supports online multiplayer it's really the couch co-op that captures the spirit of the game as you try to coordinate attacks with three other players in this hectic but entertaining adventure. Best Remake: Metroid: Samus Returns The Metroid series continues to have one of the most absolutely vexing release schedules out of any Nintendo IP. Granted, on a global scale, Metroid isn't as popular as Nintendo's other huge franchises, but for many fans the absolute silence between 2010's Metroid: Other M and 2016's Federation Force (both of which were met with mixed opinions from critics and fans) was a dire period indeed. So imagine everyone's surprise when, at E3 2017, Nintendo not only announces an upcoming Metroid Prime 4, but a remake of Metroid II, releasing in just a few months, and it turns out to be fantastic. Metroid: Samus Returns blows the original out of the water—granted it was a Game Boy title but still, Samus Returns captures the same sense of discovery and challenge with beautifully fluid action and thrilling boss fights. The wait for a new Metroid title was excruciating but the next generation of Metroid is off to a fantastic start with Samus Returns. Most Purely Joyful Game: Super Mario Odyssey For all of the years that they have produced Mario games, Nintendo has always managed to keep one important tenet in mind: games should be fun to play. Super Mario Odyssey lives up to this philosophy in every aspect of the game. The environments are a blast to explore, the creatures you can capture are charming and used in inventive ways, and unearthing one hidden moon after another makes for a wonderfully addictive adventure. The freedom you have in exploring and collecting moons not only gives the game a perfect sense of pacing, it speaks to the philosophy of the Switch itself. Play where you want, however you want, but you're guaranteed to be having fun with Odyssey. Bonus Award: Best Song - Jump Up, Super Star! I couldn't mention Odyssey without touching upon the delightfully catchy theme song. The vocal track is definitely a change of pace for Mario but like the game itself it oozes fun and positivity—I don't think it's possible to listen to it without at least bobbing your head along to the beat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4xW9aCg2zY Best Excavation Game: SteamWorld Dig 2 Did you know SteamWorld Dig wasn't Image & Form's first game? They had two games released prior to the 2013 title, but neither gained as much traction as a game about digging for gems in an increasingly sprawling underground labyrinth. Thank goodness Dig became as popular as it did though, because Image & Form has been delivering gold ever since. SteamWorld Dig 2 is every bit as addictive and entertaining as its predecessor, and adds just enough new gameplay elements to keep the adventure feeling fresh and unique. It's always impressive to see what talented developers can make fun in a video game—in this case digging, collecting, and selling gems—but SteamWorld Dig 2's addictive charm speaks for itself. Best Hope for Future Remakes: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia It's a pretty great time to be a Fire Emblem fan. This year alone saw a remake for a game that was never released in English, a spin-off action game, and even a mobile game that pays homage to the franchise's long history. And Shadows of Valentia is a pretty great remake, one that finds a very delicate balance between the old quirks of the original game and some new features that help make the experience a bit more modern and a bit more unique. Best of all, this may pave the way for more remakes. After all, there are still several Fire Emblem games that were never released outside of Japan, and now would be the perfect time to introduce them to the rest of the world. Best Surprise Delight: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Seriously, who could have predicted that those bizarre rumors of a Mario/Rabbids crossover would be true, or that the end result would be such a fun game? Kingdom Battle came completely out of left field: a turn-based strategy game starring Mario and Rabbids, with an incredibly deep movement and shooting system as well as some serious challenges. Honestly the best part of Kingdom Battle may be the fact that it isn't just a goofy crossover game. This is a genuinely difficult, engaging, and rewarding strategy game, one that fans of the genre will absolutely love—even if it does have the occasional fart joke. Best Use of Construction Paper: Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together! Speaking of surprise delights, I doubt anyone could have predicted that this odd little co-op puzzle game would turn out to be one of the highlights of the Switch's launch library. Snipperclips is charming, challenging, and wonderfully inventive in how it gives you just enough tools to overcome the game's tasks, but only if you're able to think up clever solutions. For a long time the game's only downside was its short length, but recent DLC has given players another chance to snip through even more unique puzzles. Best City Building/Action-RPG Combo: Ever Oasis And here's another surprising little game in a year filled with big name Nintendo titles. Ever Oasis may not have the star power of Mario, Zelda, or Metroid, but it has plenty of charm, and an unusual combination of gameplay elements that end up working well together in a satisfying loop. Build up your oasis to attract residents, venture out to gather materials to stock residents' shops, earn currency for shop sales, use currency to build more shops—it's a simple cycle that perfectly scratches the itch for both city-builder fans and action-RPG fans. Those players will find themselves pouring hour after hour into Ever Oasis. Bonus Award: Cutest Characters Seriously, look at these guys. Adorable. Best Challenging-but-Addictive Game: Has-Been Heroes Another early eShop title for the Switch, Has-Been Heroes puts a unique spin on the Rogue-like formula with its three-lane real-time strategy combat system. When you step back to look at it all, there is a lot happening in Has-Been Heroes, and all of it makes it easy for you to die. Repeatedly. But the mark of a good game is one that compels you to keep playing and keep retrying, and that's something that Has-Been Heroes manages beautifully. Best Confusing RPG: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 There are two things you can say about every Xenoblade game: they have gorgeous, massive environments to explore, and they have an incredibly complex battle system with a dozen little aspects that you need to keep track of at all times. Thankfully while playing these details aren't too confusing, but boy are these games intimidating when you just look at them from the outside. Still, once you put some time into it (and each Xenoblade game can last over a hundred hours) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a deeply engrossing RPG adventure, one that hits plenty of JRPG clichés but is still a blast to simply lose yourself in. Best Time-Looping Game: The Sexy Brutale I'll be honest, I'm a sucker for a good murder-mystery. But what makes The Sexy Brutale stand out is the combination of several murders, all repeating within one looping day, and a central mystery tying all of them together. The stylish art design and catchy soundtrack certainly help draw the player in as well, but discovering more about the overarching mystery bit by bit is what makes The Sexy Brutale such a compelling adventure. Best Not-Quite-Monster-Hunter Game: Monster Hunter Stories Switch owners are still waiting patiently for some word on a localized Monster Hunter game for Nintendo's latest system but in the meantime 3DS owners get to enjoy a spin-off creature-collector RPG that turns the normally massive, frightening monsters into adorable companions. It may not have the same intensity as the main series but the charming Pokémon-style adventure has the kind of depth that RPG fans will enjoy, even as they curse at their monster companion for using the wrong attack in the midst of an intense battle. Most Therapeutic Game: Fire Emblem Warriors Tell me it's not satisfying to tear through hundreds of enemies at once. Musou games may be pretty formulaic when you compare them to each other, but each one gives you that absolutely satisfying feeling of raw power by taking on entire armies by yourself. And to be fair Fire Emblem Warriors does a fine job of balancing the action gameplay with a bit of the strategy that Fire Emblem is known for. Practically every level has a whole variety of objectives to cover and enemies charging toward you at once, so you have to keep on your toes to handle all of them. Mix in a few fan favorites from the Fire Emblem series and you've got a game that is beautifully action-packed with tons of replay value. Best Murder Clean-Up Simulator: Serial Cleaner A stylish 70s setting, a protagonist with a hip 'stache, and pools of blood to mop up with a vacuum cleaner. Serial Cleaner isn't your typical video game, mostly because you aren't the one murdering anyone, it's just your job to make sure all of the evidence is neatly cleaned up before the police can get to it. Putting aside the unique setting for a moment Serial Cleaner is an excellent stealth game, one where you have to rely upon precise timing since you don't have any fancy gadgets to help you get out of a sticky situation. It's challenging, but rewarding when you make a clean getaway. Best New IP: ARMS In a year where Nintendo delivered hit after hit from its core franchises, ARMS is a good reminder that they can do just as well with a brand new IP as well. And like Splatoon in 2015 this game doesn't skate by on just the Nintendo branding. ARMS is a genuinely inventive take on one-on-one fighting games, which really only makes the game's popularity all the more impressive. Here is a game where players have to completely learn the ins and outs of a unique fighting system, especially if players opt for the motion controls—arguably more challenging but clearly how the developers envisioned the game. No matter what control challenges the game presents though the depth of gameplay, colorful characters, and continuous free updates have grabbed fans worldwide. We'll see if ARMS ends up with the same lasting appeal as Splatoon but so far it's off to a strong start. Best Old-School Throwback Game: Thimbleweed Park Point-and-Click adventures get back to the basics of video games, when puzzles were esoteric and required combining every item with every other item just to see if anything might happen. Thankfully Thimbleweed Park isn't as tedious as that, but it will still challenge your puzzle-solving skills, especially as the game progresses and more and more locations, items, and characters are added to the mix. From the graphics to the humor to the puzzle design Thimbleweed Park is a love letter to the genre, one that pays homage to all the best (and quirkiest) aspects of 80s computer gaming. Best "Oh Yeah That Came Out This Year" Game: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King Anyone else forget that the 3DS Dragon Quest VIII port came out this year? To be fair the Switch's launch in March kind of overshadowed any other gaming news for a while, and Dragon Quest VIII launched in mid-January of this year, back when people were still working through the influx of holiday titles. But even if it was easy to forget about Dragon Quest VIII is everything that fans love about RPGs and the Dragon Quest series, along with a few new features that make the long RPG grind a little faster. P.S. It was quite a year for remakes/ports on the 3DS, wasn't it? The "Move Over, Cooking Mama" Award: Battle Chef Brigade Here's another oddball game recipe for 2017: one part side-scrolling action, one part match-3 puzzle, a pinch of Iron Chef influence, and you've cooked up one of the most charming titles of the year. Battle Chef Brigade is kind of the type of game that you have to play to understand, but once you get a taste for it you'll be hooked instantly. The timed battles are wonderfully engaging and challenging, and even across the game's short length the developers have crafted a fascinating little world for the brigade to inhabit. The game was only released a few weeks ago but hopefully the developers are already working on a second serving. Game of the Year 2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Yeah, I know, not much of a surprise here. But anyone that has played the game will immediately understand why it has swept up so many game of the year awards. Breath of the Wild is an incredible achievement not just for the Zelda franchise but the open-world genre as well. Just like Super Mario Odyssey the freedom of exploration is an absolute joy—few video game experiences can compare to those hours when you leave the Great Plateau and see the entirety of the game's world laid out before you, just waiting for you to dive in. Like the original Legend of Zelda and Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild will stand as a landmark title in the franchise for being both a breath of fresh air for the series and yet also a natural progression of the original game's open gameplay.

  20. The Professor Layton series was one of the best to come out of the DS. The DS was an odd, experimental little system, and so was Layton, not just in its gameplay approach but in the very core concept of the game. A game series about a top hat-wearing, puzzle-solving professor in a bizarre British setting doesn't sound like it would be an immediate hit, but the games endeared themselves to millions of fans with their charming graphics, memorable music, and emotional storytelling. The professor put his puzzle-solving hat to rest a few years ago, but developer Level-5 has finally given fans a new adventure in the same universe. Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy stars Layton's daughter as she takes up the puzzle- and mystery-solving mantle of her father by opening her own detective agency. Unlike the last spin-off—Layton Brothers: Mystery Room on mobile devices—Katrielle's adventure stays close to the franchise's roots, though the game still doesn't feel quite the same as the professor's grand adventures. Millionaires' Conspiracy takes place several years after the original Layton games and hence stars an entirely new cast of characters (well, except for a couple of old standbys for longtime fans of the series). First up is of course Katrielle Layton, following in her father's puzzle-solving footsteps, and she even has her own assistant: Ernest, a polite, well-meaning boy hopelessly infatuated with Katrielle. Kat is certainly cute and charming enough as a new character but she's never all that interesting as a protagonist, while Ernest's lovesick shtick starts to get annoying as soon as it begins. Then there's their talking dog, Sherl. Okay, so previous Layton games have had fantastical elements as well—although their conversations were never explicitly shown, Luke was able to talk to animals too—but somehow Sherl still feels out of place in this game. His presence feels tangentially related to Layton's style—close but not quite right. And that is really the theme of the entire game: a simulacrum of Professor Layton, but not quite on the mark. The cases themselves are rather underwhelming as well. And yes, that's cases, plural. Previous Layton games generally kept to one overarching mystery, but Katrielle's work sends her on multiple smaller cases, not unlike a TV detective procedural—a new mystery each week. That in itself isn't such a bad idea, but the actual mysteries are disappointingly simple. Most of the mysteries are entirely too obvious or just plain have boring low-stakes, while the final case seems to come completely out of left field with a revelation that doesn't feel earned at all from the preceding cases. The past Layton games weren't always good at balancing the mystery element either, but in Millionaires' Conspiracy the lack of solid mystery build-up makes each case bland. And the writing isn't all that compelling in other areas either. The game's sense of humor is almost too goofy—oftentimes the punny names and gags feel like they'd be more at home in a Phoenix Wright game than Layton—and it's hard to truly feel invested in many of these new characters. Most frustratingly of all, the game never addresses the two biggest mysteries surrounding its main characters, which is left as an annoying tease for a possible future game. Although Millionaires' Conspiracy follows the same puzzle-solving structure as previous Layton games—why are brainteasers hidden in so many corners of this universe, anyway?—the puzzles themselves are not quite of the same quality as the professor's. Overall there seem to be fewer genuine brainteasers and far more trick puzzles, i.e. puzzles where you need to carefully read the exact wording of the question to find the answer rather than think through the solution. All of the Layton games have some of these types of tricks, but somehow Katrielle's puzzles just aren't as satisfying to solve. Some of them are just plain poorly worded. Too often I found myself shaking my head as the solution appeared rather than smirking at the clever puzzle design. Maybe I've just become a master puzzle-solver over the years—unlikely—but the difficulty level in Millionaires' Conspiracy is disappointingly low. Since Katrielle has multiple cases to solve the flow of the game is a bit different as well. From her office you can choose which case to tackle, and each case has specific locations, characters, puzzles, etc. After finishing a case you can return to it to complete any hidden puzzles you may have missed—there are always two more added after you've cracked the case—or find hint coins. This all means there's no need for Granny Riddleton in this game since nothing is truly missable, and the game even tells you on which screens you've missed puzzles or hint coins when you return to a completed case. The change in story structure has definitely made the game easier on the player. Despite featuring 185 puzzles in the main game, the pace at which you find and solve puzzles feels oddly slow in Millionaires' Conspiracy. This is largely due to the multiple case format. Each case has an average of about fourteen puzzles, and since each case has a new mystery there is a lot of exposition to read through before getting into the puzzle-solving action. In a way this makes the game feel very drawn out. The twenty hours or so that it takes to finish the game feels somewhat slow by the end, especially since the mysteries aren't all that compelling. Like other Layton games there are additional optional puzzles and mini-games to enjoy, though like the main puzzles they just aren't quite as interesting as past games'. The visual and musical design of the game is very much in keeping with the Layton series as a whole. Although the franchise made the shift to 3D models some time ago it's the 2D artwork that is truly eye-catching, from the beautiful, painting-esque backgrounds to the charming and cartoonish character designs. The 3D models feel particularly unnecessary in Millionaires' Conspiracy since the game doesn't support stereoscopic 3D anyway, and the gently swaying 3D characters just make everything look a little fuzzy. The visuals are still charming but Level-5 really ought to just have confidence in its 2D artwork. Meanwhile, the music feels right at home next to past Layton soundtracks—lots of strings, peppy tunes, and just plain fun songs. Layton fans will be happy to find that this aspect of the game hasn't diminished at all over the years. In many ways Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy is a triumphant return for the Layton franchise, but unfortunately there are a number of caveats at play. There are hundreds of new puzzles to solve, but the quality is distinctly weaker than before. Katrielle has a host of mysteries to tackle, but the revelations aren't nearly as satisfying. There are dozens of new, adorable characters to meet, but the main cast doesn't have quite the same charm as Layton, Luke, and everyone else from their previous escapades. Layton fans will still enjoy the adventure, but be prepared for something slightly more toned down compared to the heights of the original games. Rating: 7 out of 10 Hint Coins

  22. Ninfora, I need your help. I bought this SD card recently for my 3DS because 1) my current one has been crapping out as of late, and 2) I want to have more memory space. I have past experiences with upgrading from smaller sizes, but this time is a little different because I'm going from a 32GB to 64GB, and if I remember correctly the 3DS does not normally support sizes this large, but it can if you know how to set it up correctly. Does anyone know how this is supposed to be done? I want to make sure I get it right so that I don't risk losing any data, so I thought I'd ask you guys here. Thanks.
  23. It's easy to forget that not everyone has played every game in a franchise you love, especially the early entries that may have been overlooked just because of their age. For the Mario & Luigi RPG series the earliest entry was Superstar Saga on the GBA—not the first Mario RPG but the first to put Mario and Luigi in the starring roles and give them a variety of themed Mario Bros. abilities and combo attacks, set in a wacky RPG world (and I mean wacky in the best way possible). It remains one of the best games in the franchise, and now even more players have a chance to try it out with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions for the 3DS, complete with a new side mode starring one plucky Goomba and his team of minions. The good news is this remake retains all the goofy charm of the original, even if the new additions are modest. The main Mario platformer series may not be known for its writing but the RPG spin-offs take the opportunity to craft more elaborate and hilarious storylines in the Mushroom Kingdom. Or as I should say, the Beanbean Kingdom, where Superstar Saga takes place. The story begins with the evil Cackletta stealing Princess Peach's voice, so the Mario brothers give chase (with the unlikely assistance of Bowser). A simple enough premise, but Superstar Saga made waves in 2003 for its delightfully goofy sense of humor, one that perfectly balances between outright slapstick comedy and clever writing. And if you've never seen Fawful in a Mario + Luigi game, you're in for a treat here. This side-kick to the main villain is so wonderfully bizarre that he's charmed players for years with his unusual speech patterns and adorably small but evil stature. One of the additions to this remake is a fast-forward option during cutscenes, and while it's nice to have the option to speed things up be sure to read the dialogue as much as you can, it's worth it. Superstar Saga is the genesis of the Mario & Luigi RPGs, and began the combat system where you control Mario with the "A" button and Luigi with the "B" button and can increase attack power or dodge attacks with a carefully timed press of the correct button (although this action-battle system actually goes further back to Super Mario RPG on the SNES). This is a long way of saying the battle system in the Mario & Luigi series has always done a great job of keeping every battle interesting. You aren't just mashing the attack button every time your turn comes around—you have to pay attention to what you're doing. And dodging well means you can completely avoid damage, so you really have to focus when the enemy is attacking, especially during long boss fights. Add in the extra-powerful Bros. attacks which require a bit more skill with timing and you've got an engaging RPG combat system that rewards skill as much as planning/level grinding. The unique battle system also means that the Mario + Luigi series has always had a pretty fluid sense of difficulty. If you're bad at dodging the game can feel pretty punishing at times, and conversely it can seem like a breeze if you avoid every hit. This remake tries to find a middle ground—or at least cater to novice players—with an easy mode that is more forgiving. As is always the case with such features easy mode is entirely optional, but if you find yourself struggling it might not be a bad idea. Superstar Saga isn't a particularly difficult game, but getting stuck on a boss battle is never fun. Superstar Saga also puts a fun twist on exploration. Your progress throughout the Beanbean Kingdom is tied to new abilities that the Mario brothers learn, which correspond to their iconic skills: jumping, hammer attacks, and fireballs. As in battles you control the brothers separately: "A" makes Mario jump and "B" makes Luigi jump. Unlike the original game you can now press "X" to make both brothers jump, which is handy. Jumping around the scenery may not sound like a big deal but Superstar Saga has a knack for making these simple actions fun. The abilities are as funny as they are functional, such as when Mario smacks Luigi with a hammer, driving him into the ground, so he can go underneath a locked gate to open it. There are a handful of times where the brothers are split up, which allows for unique puzzle-platformer sequences and serves as a good reminder that the brothers are more powerful as a team. And finally as a bonus you can see enemies wandering around the environment and can avoid them if you don't feel like taking the time to battle—though it's an RPG, you should be fighting everything you see! The controls are pretty intuitive and have gotten a couple of small upgrades like the aforementioned "X" button to make both characters jump. Additionally, the touch screen can either display a mini-map or quick links to Bros. abilities while exploring (otherwise you use "R" and "L" to cycle through the abilities). Both are welcome additions and help make exploration just a bit smoother. In battle the touch screen doesn't have much to do, but it displays the stats for Mario and Luigi, which is really only useful information when one of them is afflicted with a status ailment. The main addition to this remake is of course the new mode: Bowser's Minions. This side story follows a slightly altered version of the plot from the perspective of one enterprising little Goomba who is dead set on rescuing Bowser from the chaos of the Beanbean Kingdom. The writers have done a great job of matching the charming and outright silly tone of the main game in this side mode—in fact the best reason to play is just for the cutscenes between the various minions. The gameplay is a little less compelling, or at the very least overstays its welcome even across the relatively short length of the Bowser's Minions campaign. The key component in minion battles is planning—there's an attack triangle system where melee minions beat ranged, ranged beat flying, and flying beat melee—but the battles themselves grow tiresome pretty quickly, mainly because you don't actually get to do much. Once you've chosen your minions for the next stage you begin the battle and watch them fight. There are only two inputs you need to focus on now: timed attacks, similar to Mario and Luigi's attacks in the main game, and Captain Commands which are special abilities that cost command points to use. Battles can be kind of boring with these limited tools for interaction, and sometimes luck just isn't on your side when it comes to timed attacks or Captain Commands, so these strategic encounters have an obnoxiously chaotic element to them. Battles end up feeling pretty repetitive, especially when you have to replay previous encounters to level up a bit (enemy armies always seem to be just a little ahead of you, level-wise). Bowser's Minions is okay as a side mode but that's really all it is: a side dish novelty that you might enjoy playing in short bursts but ultimately won't hold your attention. The visuals have gotten a significant overhaul compared to the original GBA graphics, trading sprite artwork for polygonal models. The original sprites had a lot of personality to them and while the new graphics aren't quite the same this 3DS version still looks great. The shift in art style doesn't completely diminish the charming character design that defines Superstar Saga, from the exaggerated expressions to the oddball villains. And although the developers didn't add stereoscopic 3D to the game—which feels like a missed opportunity since they revamped the graphics anyway—Superstar Saga looks pretty sharp on the 3DS screen. It also sounds great, with an updated soundtrack that improves upon the GBA's sound system. The composition is just as good, with plenty of catchy songs, and now you can hear it on better speakers than the original. Mario + Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions takes an already great game and basically just repackages it. The updated visuals and audio are great since the original game is quite old at this point, and a few touch-ups make the adventure a little smoother, but the one big addition doesn't actually add much to the experience. On the other hand, Bowser's Minions doesn't detract from it either. It may not be a hugely interesting side mode but it can be charming in small doses, and since it's an optional mode you can just as easily focus entirely on the main game instead. The core Superstar Saga experience may not be particularly different or revamped but it remains an utterly charming and engaging RPG just the same. Rating: 9 out of 10 Beans
