Where did you get that from? I just said I didn't understand the level of hype- not that it had zero appeal

PB has a point though.  As you said, you definitely could get the same thing in a variety of ways whether via emulator or some of the platforms out there specifically designed to play retro games, however a lot of the selling power behind this is nostalgia driven and having that form factor of the original system. That, plus I'm sure many members of the buying population for this thing probably don't even bother with applications like emulators anyway so simply having that recognizable form factor is already one less barrier to entry in that regard.  It's not hard to understand where the level of hype is coming from in that regard.  When the Sega plug and play consoles came out a while ago they were flying off shelves too, although they were arguably in much more abundant supply.

With that said, it's weird Nintendo is cutting this off outright.  Any of the other retro platforms out there like the Colecovision, Atari, Genesis, etc. still exist on shelves.  The NES Classic could be an evergreen money maker for them to keep it going unless they have something else in mind.

I mean, isn't it a given that they'd sell through their stock of they only ship like four of them? I still have yet to see one in stores. I mean I have no doubt it's popular, but I can't help but feel it's pertinent to point that out.

Depends on the area I'm sure but it's not like most stores are only getting four and that's it.  Toys R Us has advertised selling the Switch on one of two days out of the week since launch day so far and I know my store got at least 25-30 units on both of those days and both times we sold out within an hour of opening.  The first time we actually sold out before opening as all the call tickets were handed out before the doors even opened.  I'm sure you could find plenty of other such testimony floating around as well with other larger retailers.

The thing to look out for is if Nintendo decided to sit on their initial expectations or revise them (which I think they've done at least once already) and even start making moves to produce more like they did during the Wii era.  But it's not as if they're just trickling out a few here and a few there.  A lot of stores that get them in end up holding them in bulk to put out for sale on a specific day to drive sales.

Especially weird that it's a bundle with a WiiU original game...

An enhanced version of the one of the most celebrated multiplayer series of all time on a platform that emphasizes multiplayer play anywhere is a good shot though.  Granted, it was on Wii U first but as sure as we're already seeing it with former Wii U owners there is probably going to be a lot of interest still in Deluxe despite where the base package hails from and of course that still puts up a lot of opportunity for new Switch owners who never bought into the Wii U.

  4. With some help from viewers Gamexplain provides a brief glimpse at what has turned out to be four additional fighters to the ARMS roster that have yet to be discussed. They only appear as part of the background graphic that is a collage of characters and elements from the game but there are some clear "profile-esque" provided that gives a brief look at these new characters.

Federation Force went overboard and did not execute plenty of what's new up to par. I had fun with the game within its Normal Mode, and that's about it. Hard Mode becomes very frustrating about halfway through the mission selection, and then there's Blast Ball, which is a joke in a Metroid game. I don't know why they decided to shove both of those into 100% completion and turned what could have been really fun into a massive chore that only amounts to file text as opposed to getting a special paint job and/or new MODs. The Hard Mode rewards are just standard paint jobs too, making it pretty worthless to trudge through alone and eventually with others. Only 2 paint jobs of the 28 available for the campaign do anything to impact gameplay, and they're locked behind the Samus and ZSS amiibo. There's plenty of wasted potential with this game that could have made it more tolerable. Energy Tank MOD? Speed Booster MOD? Missile Expansion MOD? Ammo Expansion MOD? Ice Beam MOD? Plasma Beam MOD? Wave Beam MOD? They've been in multiple Metroid games for a reason.

I mean... it's hard mode, it's kind of meant to be more difficult if not frustrating unless you mean there's something mechanically wrong with it.  While the game emphasize cooperative play to help clear missions every single one is manageable in Hard mode if you're smart with your MOD selection and how you play the game.  Play most missions Hard Mode as you would in Normal is either:

    1)  A good way to not complete the mission 100% (bonus objectives and whatnot)

    2)  A good way to die faster

    3)  If you survive to see the end of some missions, you'll probably be depleted of anything useful to actually survive the last leg of the mission

You'll either learn quick to adapt to the difficulty change, require help in the form of cooperative support online/local, or quit attempting that difficultly altogether.

  6. Surprised at some of the announcements and particularly at 3DS still trucking along.  Glad it's not nearly as dead as some would have you believe earlier in the year.  I'm particularly stoked on final confirmation of MH Stories coming over.

Switch wise, a few interesting announcements but nothing too crazy, I guess they're saving the  Bob-omb drops for E3. ;)  Like how ARMS is shaping up, no idea if it was mentioned before but the "arms" mix matching is news to me.  The new character is interesting too and I wonder if there will be more characters revealed that have their own quirks and abilities that aren't limited to punches.  Splatoon 2 looks as good as ever and I like the Salmon/Egg/whatever mode.

I really actually want to find out a LOT more on those two games--especially ARMS.

    *HOT* topics for me:

    ARMS:

More characters than the ones listed ( I believe all they have revealed is Mummy, Ninja, Mech girl, Ribbon Girl, and Spring guy)?

    More weapons/ARMS sets?

    Online/offline gameplay modes

More arenas?  Do they have their own hazards?

    Any Amiibo goodies?

    DLC?

    Splatoon 2:

    Arenas and modes list

DLC for clothes, weapons, arenas, playable Inlklings.

Rollout plan like the first one?

    Amiibo unlocks?

Pretty much where I'm at as well.  I actually have some interest in Arms so I'll definitely be looking out for info on that one.  Getting Splatoon 2 is already a lock so hearing more about it is just icing on the cake. :P

  8. I'm sure we'll end up getting this one, yeah it's largely a retread of content but some of the new stuff seems worth the entry if we can get some game nights going with this version as well.  I'm sure a battle mode night or post multiplayer race battle mode session would garner a lot more interest than what was done with the vanilla MK8.

And double items should make things interesting.  Time to hit AF with ALL THE SHELLS!! :P

Or what if someone gets a double Zeus!? :o

  9. I'd be more worried if we started seeing action being taken by retailers or sellers which would indicate that there is a consistently widespread problem (for instance, like what was seen with the 360s Red Ring of Death which eventually resulted in costing MS approx. $1B to address).  I don't say that to downplay that these issues exist but more that while they exist they probably aren't in such a high number that would indicate entire lots of production being compromised by quality control issues. The one issue that seems to have gained any traction in that regard is the left Joycon desyncing problem and even in that case Nintendo has been implementing a simple fix upon "repair" for and even then they issued an official statement disregarding that even this issue was widespread or significant.

PETA was a huge part in those two things happening and are proud of what happened, as they should be.

My problem is before they got involved with their protests, we as a society had no issues at SeaWorld and the circus but then again we weren't aware of what was going on behind the scenes either.

But that's the sticking point.  Just because people didn't know doesn't make it right which is something many agreed with as once these issues were made known people gravitated away from those events.  The circus is fun, Sea World is fun, but a lot of people lost appreciation for those things when they realized what these animals were put through for the sake of our enjoyment. That people are now armed with the knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes they are now allowed a more informed opinion to make the choice on whether or not to continue supporting those things. As an organization Peta has done good in this regard but there are often moments where they (or their members) take things to an absurd level.

  11. I almost thought this was an early April Fool's joke...

GoNintendo - PETA discusses 1-2-Switch's milking minigame, wants it to be more realistic

You can read the full letter there but basically Peta says some of its members played the cow milking game in 1-2 Switch and are dismayed to see that Nintendo "sugarcoated the subject" of what cow milking actually entails.  They suggest Nintendo should make it more realistic by, among other things, representing the actual process that milking entails such as artificially inseminating cows on a rape rack amidst terrible conditions.  They have a solution though in that Nintendo should revamp the game to showcase the process of creating almond milk by creating a minigame where you pick almonds instead.

    Happy Friday, everyone!!

If that were the case then no one would ever buy a Nintendo product. Not to mention they would be facing a shitload of lawsuits as a result.

I mean, I get where Chain is coming from on this. Getting repairs as necessary is one thing especially if there is the possibility it could cause further damage if left unchecked, but just doing so out of spite or just to "stick it" to the company is a bit much assuming that's what the person is after.  Honestly, it makes me wonder what the defect rate on these is in this instance whether it's a known widespread problem or a vocal minority.  I only know of a few other Switch owners personally and as far as I know they've had no screen scratching issues. Like, I remember Nintendo being openly proactive about addressing the weak Wii Remote straps or when Wii units were having issues reading Super Smash Bros. Brawl but it's a different story here.  I suppose as Nintendo gets more data regarding this that could change but if it hasn't by now it probably is inconsequential to do anything more than request a standard repair process as opposed to anything more "involved" so to speak.

A simple mistake on the packaging design, then? Or is this a clue that there will be DLC in the future? It'd be kind of crazy to have DLC that is twice the size of the game itself, but I guess it's possible. Or–and I'm being super persnickety about the wording here–are they saying that the 13GB download is optional (do not need to download it), and it's meant to make the game run more smoothly, like the downloads for Xenoblade Chronicles X? I thought part of the benefit of a cartridge over a disc is faster load times anyway, but I admit I don't know much about those technical aspects.

Honestly, I wonder how the game was optimized in the first place for it to have the load times it had on Wii U.  But that aside, hopefully it was just a mistake since the confusion wasn't really helping anyone looking into this game for Switch.  Still makes me wonder if they're still telling the whole story on it though.

Hm, potentially the kind of stuff that normally goes out to the press, but instead will be seen directly by fans? Or imagine if they do constant information drip feeds for all major games coming out, kind of like what Sakurai did for the months leading up to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii U/3DS. I must admit I was always super excited to see what new tidbit would come out of the Brawl blog; it might be nice to see something similar for things like Super Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

That would actually be a pretty cool idea.  Honestly, I doubt we would get the kind of insight an Iwata Asks would normally offer but maybe something similar from the localization side of things for upcoming games would be cool.

  15. Pretty cool idea and offers more exposure to a team that has gained a lot of positive feedback thanks to the Treehouse Live segments.  Although I do find this bit interesting:

Sometimes it makes sense for that information to come in the form of a Nintendo Treehouse: Live broadcast, but what we’re finding is that there is more to share over the course of the year, and it may not always make sense to do it in a live stream. That’s where the Nintendo Treehouse Log comes in.

I wonder what will come of this?

  16. My bro got the Switch and I got Zelda the day both came out but I didn't start playing until recently since I'm on vacation from work and from school with Spring Break so I haven't put a whole lot of time into it.  However, so far the game has pretty much exceeded my expectations.  I had no reason not to believe Nintendo about the scale of the world but I've moreso been impressed that as big as it is it doesn't feel empty or for the most part doesn't feel like wasted space.  Whether you take the direct route or the scenic one you're bound to find, discover or run into something and you're usually rewarded for going out of your way. I basically spent most of my playtime today making progress on the main quest because like most open world games I get easily sidetracked just going off and seeing what's off the beaten path.

The one worry I had going into the game though was probably the puzzles and breakable weapons.  Puzzles mainly because of the number of dungeons not being that big and also wondering how in depth the shrines might be after seeing the few on Treehouse Live last year had me feeling like it would take backseat.  But nope, even in the overworld there are a variety of both simple and a big more complex puzzles.  Ditto for the variety of shrines which have puzzles that are fairly straight forward and others that are complex but allow you the freedom to solve them however you see fit.  And breakable weapons I was somewhat concerned with because of the possibility of losing a cool weapon or being without one in a critical moment.  However, such an event hasn't happened yet and honestly the weapons being breakable cuts down a ton on the item bloat I usually find myself dealing with in most open world games.  I still get that feeling of "gotta grab everything" but the only part of my inventory that even suffers are the ingredients and that's kept in check because I'm constantly mixing up combinations to improve my odds of survival.  The game is just really well balanced in that way where nearly everything feels like it has a realized purpose.

Also, combat is probably my favorite. It's quite the wake up call when you're getting bodied by friggin Bokoblins of all things who were basically pushovers in every Zelda up until now.  Let alone certain other enemy types on my travels that I simply chose to run away from until I feel more confident to take them on.

I still have a lot of game to play though so I'm sure I'll have more to gush about in due time.  Needless to say, Nintendo knocked it out of the park on this one.
