  1. ARMS is pretty much the truth.

There is a lot more depth to its gameplay than I thought even after the drip feed reveals of being able to mix match ARMS components and the abilities they come with. Even the characters themselves and how they move and react add another layer to it.  The other game modes seem like they'll be fun alternatives to the main fighting modes and they've done really well with setting up multiplayer games/matches both offline and online. The Splatoon-esque rollout of content with the TestPunch and Free periodic DLC post launch is the friggin cherry on top.  Fans have really taken to this game similarly to Splatoon prior to its release so I hope ARMS is able to see the same kind of success as well.

  2. I almost thought this was a necro-bumped thread. 🤔

Anyway, it's kinda weird to suggest that they always have to be different yet weren't always that way. If you feel that they've jumped from being conventional to being unique that's one thing but by their own actions and I'm sure by the words of their execs over the years they've been doing what they always do. They entered into the industry doing things differently and almost always introduced product innovations and ideas that did things differently if you really want to boil down the context to just that. It's not as if "they" just had an epiphany and decided to be different for the sake of being different. There is almost always an explanation as to why they went a certain design choice.

  3. So ever since a glimpse of a potential third character came into view for the upcoming Sonic Heroes fans have been wondering who it could be.  Well, that question has finally been answered as the third hero will be one of your creation, more or less.

You start by choosing from a set of character types (shown below) and beyond that can customize their look with various items and gadgets that are unlocked and collected through gameplay.  In addition, a new take on Wisps from past games now called Wispons will give your hero new abilities/skills.

  4. Miketendo - What you don't know about amiibo!

Thought this was an interesting little editorial about the process third parties go through to get their own amiibo made.  Whole thing is worth a read but hit up the bullets below (courtesy of GoNintendo) for a cliffnotes version of the process:

    Quote

    - they need to submit a proposal to Nintendo that consists of things like their design for the amiibo
    - they also need to share the function in which it will serve
    - details on the go-to-market strategy and timing are required
    - info on who will handle the manufacturing of the amiibo, as well as the distribution partner and sales/marketing strategy
    - if approved, the developer/publisher will then need to purchase 100,000 NFC (Near Field Communication) tags
    - these cost around 30 cents a tag

the whole point of the consumer facing bits of E3 is to get people excited in the future of your console

you don't do that by showing fucking yarn yoshi three years in a goddamn row

or by just showing stuff that's coming out in the near future

remember how hyped you were for smash brothers?

what is the future of the switch past mario, nintendo

i want you to make me excited

They'll probably have some news about games beyond 2017 but they're still going to talk about games that will define the future of the platform with titles people can expect to play within the half year between that E3 and the remainder of the year.  That and they'll have Directs throughout the year to continue discussing those plans as well.

Wow they're actually having an E3 conference instead of a Direct around that period? Huh.

I sincerely hope they have plenty of new games to announce because they can not afford to have another Wii U situation. They gotta keep this Switch momentum going.

I'm assuming the video presentation they're talking about is their E3 Direct or whatever. That's what the Nintendo Spotlight event is.

further proof that nintendo doesn't really give a shit about e3 anymore

    shame

Of course they do, as they could stand to just not show up otherwise.  This is the same company that basically headlined their last E3 almost exclusively on a single game... and kinda sorta took the crown for that year as well.

  7. That's good they did something to make up for it, just hope they didn't burn too much good will with people who were turned off from getting it because of that whole fiasco.

I'm really starting to wonder why these Switch physical releases think they can get a $10 premium over other consoles.

    Switch Hype tax?

Its $10 more expensive to do a SD card instead of a disc?

    Something doesn't smell right.

  8. France has a really funky law there regarding streaming theatrical content.  That's nuts.

So, is the problem here that movies going straight to streaming and avoiding theaters somehow goes against the spirit of the Cannes Film Festival or something? Depending on the movie I do think a theatrical release has its benefits.  There's something about that experience that can't be replicated at home by most and I think adds to the value of that experience.  So cutting that out completely simply because of day and date streaming demands is a system that probably needs a second look if it eventually results in more and more films not making it to the silver screen.

  9. Though I've read through the manga since then it's just lovely seeing all these cool moments now that Attack on Titan is back.  Seeing everyone flip out about the big reveal in the last episode has been really cool to watch.  They absolutely nailed that event and I almost wish my first experience with that moment was seeing it animated rather than in the manga.

  10. I didn't even realize single joy con play was going to be an option.  But it makes sense if Nintendo intends Switch to be a self contained multiplayer experience (when called upon) on the go and ARMS seems to be the next game primed for that spotlight.

So just like too much background sound can make it harder to hear, background dialog and voices makes it harder for the language part of your brain to focus on language tasks, like reading, writing, or listening.

Try reading a book, or writing a paragraph at the same time as listening to your favorite lyrics vs your favorite non-lyrical song.

That actually didn't bother me, it was the actual sound mix being so off that stuck out like a sore thumb to me like what Carl inferred in his post above. Many of the scenes that had lyrical tracks playing in the background while dialogue was going on would have been alright, IMO, if the actual volume of the track wasn't overpowering the dialogue between the characters in certain cutscenes.

  12. Well, well, comments from the game's composer Yatsunori Mitsuda details a few processes that are involved in creating the music for this game. Apparently, the music has been so good that it has even brought him to tears.

Expecting good things on the music front at the very least. ^_^

    - Mitsuda has been working on mixes for songs being formed by the Irish choral ensemble Anúna
    - says the music actually made him cry due to it being so good

  13. Well, for an actual serious comment glad to hear you're liking your new place and settling in well enough.  At least it gives you a bit more freedom and privacy compared to your previous digs.  Anyway, I didn't even known Gamestops still did gaming tournaments.  I remember back in the day my mall had a Babbages (that eventually became Electronics Boutique) and they used to do tournaments every now and again for big releases.  When I was in elementary school a friend's uncle worked at that same one he hosted a tournament for the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 3. (I didn't get to go, but got the game for Christmas later that year) And last I remember it still being around was when they had some tournament for one of the early PS2 Madden games.  Since Gamestop took over that space not long after I actually I don't recall them having any tournaments, but maybe the bigger more populated cities (or locations with managers who actually promote community events like tournies) have them on the regular or at least more consistently.

  14. Can't friggin wait.  Iron Fist wasn't nearly as good as I hoped but hopefully his role in the Defenders will freshen him up a bit.  Loving what I'm seeing out of this trailer though. ^_^

  15. Gotta have a Mission Mode.  It's one thing I liked from MKDS that added a bit of variety to the standard game modes most Mario Kart games have and was able to add in some things you don't normally see.  Stuff like a pseudo boss battle where you had to push a Big Bully off the stage or different objectives like targeting enemies, collecting a certain number of coins, driving through a stage backwards and I think you were ranked on how well or how fast you accomplished these tasks so it was another layer of challenge to the game. Also have multiplayer available with Mission Mode as well.

Courses that change between laps.  Basically, from lap to lap something happens that alters the layout of the course that basically makes each lap different from the last.  So like maybe an environment effect on a course set in a snowy area could result in a avalanche that closes off one path while opening another, or a course with a lot of rain creates a flash flood that turns one part of the course into an underwater portion.  Granted, there are some courses out there like Grumble Volcano that sort of go this route but the course is still roughly the same save for a few slabs of the track that fall into the lava.  I want to see more significant changes, and maybe make them dynamic or random to shake things up every time you play that course.
