  1. you're basically just realigning the pins, and heating them up makes that easier. hot water just happens to be the easiest way to do it. even the solution you mentioned is just moving things around until it's resting correctly. there are slower, more manual adjustment methods, and then there's also just disabling the lockout chip, but i promise you it's not gonna mess up anything (naturally provided you are not introducing other components into the water or installing it back into the NES and running it before it dries )
  2. welcome back! it's great to see new (read: old) names popping up here again. i was the most active i've ever been here during lockdowns for probably obvious reasons i love love love finding niche fansites that are still up and running. even though i usually only lurked , it's a very nostalgic and sorely missed part of the internet for me. is the ogre battle the new one?
  3. my apt complex has a little freebie section you can leave items for others to take before it gets thrown out at the end of the week and somebody left ringfit with all the equipment! i hadn't been able to play in a long time since i had only been using my ex's/roommate's in the past but it was really nice back then. less necessary now that i bike for work but i could use a push on the strength side still, i think
  4. i've tried to play through persona 4 like six times at this point and i love it but i just never retain interest long enough and if i'm focused on studying i end up feeling like i should just be reading an actual book/VN
  5. oh, that clover? the same one that started development like 10+ years ago? i'm shocked it made it that far cool that they put so much effort into balance but it's a shame after so many years they haven't figured out how to be funny without bottom of the barrel shock humor but my view is if you wouldn't say tranny to my face or the equivalent to whatever other shitty things it does you should keep the game to yourself lol "it's really great if you're not easily offended none of the terrible things it says/depicts brings up bad memories because it's been weaponized irl against you specifically!" is like. cmon. there are so many other pokemon hacks with cool monsters and decent difficulty you could talk about instead
  6. water is bad for electronics, yes, but this is just a hunk of metal lol
  7. yea this makes the most sense ig lol oh gosh
  8. i can't believe it's been almost 7 years since i joined this site more than i was actually on NS1 and 2 combined
  9. you're correct! the issue with the 72-pin NES connectors is that the connection gets warped over time. but there's a surprisingly easy fix: take it apart and boil it! taking apart the NES to retrieve the connector: http://www.retrofixes.com/2013/07/nintendo-72-pin-connector.html (ignore the manual pin bending) cleaning it in boiling water: http://www.retrofixes.com/2015/09/boil-vs-bending-will-boiling-nes-72pin.html the hot water softens the metal and it tends to resume its initial position afterwards. i have fixed my own blinking light NES problems with this in the past the other option is breaking a connection on the motherboard to the region lockout chip, which causes the blinking light in the first place, after which the console is much more accepting of less-perfect connections. but messing this up risks ruining the console (which i've also done in the past ). if you have any background in modifying/repairing electronics, though, you may want to look up disabling the NES lockout chip instead. or both!) after boiling, you may have to manually bend pins back into shape afterwards if it's really warped, but since you said you still get successful connections sometimes, you most likely won't need to. but give it a try and lemme know how it works for ya! (edit: it's hard to remember because i've since sold that NES and kept my toploader, but if i remember correctly, boiling the pins tightened the connection to the point where it worked flawlessly every time if i didn't press the cartridge down after inserting. so give that a try, too, if it doesn't work normally)
  10. very nice! lucky it doesn't have the blinking light issue (also has a fix, just more annoying) wipe down the cart contacts with isopropyl and they should work a lot better. easier than blowing on them and no risk of corrosion the biggest problem with playing old consoles is that everything is more difficult because of input delay unless you happen to have a CRT. although if you plan on using it a lot and don't want to deal with finding/using a CRT, there's a converter that speedrunners use for lagless conversion called the OSSC. it's pricey, but very effective: https://videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/
  11. i googled palworld and the first thing i see is this oh my god. it's literally the can i copy your homework meme it's so blatant it feels like it has to be an intentional middle finger or something absolutely incredible
  12. passed over after another interview it seems. and another one where i was asked for an interview and then they never responded again it's not even anything big i'm just tryin to get another part time coffee gig my god
  13. what exactly is a walking sim in this context
  14. stuff like this happens in march a lot because it's the end of the fiscal year in japan lol
  15. classes started this week so it's going to get more difficult, but so far i've been able to keep up with my reading goals! i had a couple of days where i didn't quite hit the char count, but the avg is good enough so far also, if anybody's interested in old GBA and other games, i've been trying to sell some of mine to help with bills this month https://pastes.io/ew5iahuar7 prices and stuff are flexible. if interested, just PM me on here or message me on discord if you have my info
  16. use a generator to pick one at random and remove it if you don't want to watch it now bc it means you probably never will want to
  17. to add to the above, different mics are always going to have different volume levels, but OBS has a really easy to way to balance audio built into the program. above (or below i can't remember right this second) each audio's volume setting is a bar that goes from green to yellow to red. you want your voice when you're speaking regularly to reach the yellow, and any game audio to stay in the green. exactly where in the green depends on the specific audio, but you don't want it bordering the yellow section. if it hits the red, that means your audio is clipping (it distorts and loses quality when the input is too loud for the equipment) so you don't ever want to go into the red side of the bar. there's a thing you can use called audio compression that adjusts your volume so it never clips or get too quiet, but dw about that for now. just keep an eye on the bars and don't yell right next to the mic or anything like that
  18. last i used an elgato, the audio delay was just part of it and the easiest thing to do was just delay your mic feed in the OBS settings by a matching amount i don't remember the exact number but it was around 150ms or something like that i always just used headphones, but the easiest thing to do would be to move your mic a proper setup would have a mic that only captures in one direction and is set up to be close to you with minimal gain so as to not pick up extra noise i couldn't tell you about the audio duplication, though. that setup sounds like a nightmare i would look into simplifying it if you're having weird issues. having multiple stream programs seems very redundant, for instance connect your mic directly to your computer and feed it directly into OBS. don't feed it through a second device. delay it in settings to match the game feed. record a game for a few seconds with a sound effect where it's easy to tell if it's not synced up and adjust as needed capture elgato feed directly into OBS. i remember there being some silly thing you might have to look up to get it to work, but you shouldn't need anything else capture the audio from it directly into OBS as well so that it's separate from your computer audio use the default sound capture to record discord audio
  19. updated my goals for japanese to be finish one vn/book/rpg (if it's sufficiently text heavy) a month bc i'm tired of bouncing around all the time and losing momentum to other fixations before i actually want to. it's really hard to fight that part of my brain, but i desperately want to get to a point i'm happy with in japanese rather than be amateur/intermediate all my life. i'm trying to read Flowers again, and it's gonna take about 10k chars a day to finish the first one, or about 2 hours at my current speed. so increasing my reading speed as much as i can without missing too much is one goal. but i know it'll be hard to balance this and classwork. so i've gotta be strategic and consistent about it. but i'm really hoping this'll give me more steady motivation to keep at it through the year
  20. i didn't think machines like that ever actually paid out lol. nice that it actually went to a kid
  21. may this year be filled with actually completed VNs and old JRPGs
  22. i def think it qualifies, especially since they started doing endless scroll and irrelevant suggestions all over. and just like twitter, you're always just a couple clicks away from rancid transphobia, somehow. for a while i actually kept an account because that way the front page would be blank if i wanted, but it's really hard to break from using the site even without one, because if i have a question about a game or random thing, often the most useful answers are gonna be from adding reddit to my search query lol good luck w the move
  23. also, my new years goals are mostly continue to do well in school continue to earnestly study japanese take care of myself physically—bike delivery job takes care of cardio, but i especially need to be consistent with physical therapy/supporting exercise for my neck and shoulders get the rest of my docs and citizenship taken care of, seriously, because there's no guarantee trans resources will survive any governmental changes, or just the political climate here in general reduce my phone use when it pulls me away from being present in the moment, including at home. leaving servers helped with this mostly though my partner has to get stuff changed too, so they helped me get started on that.
  24. comically i did that a couple years ago. and most social media nowadays no longer lets you scroll without an account reddit does though, and i always find myself in a loop there when i'm just trying to look up information. and then stuff like wikipedia i blocked too those are the most dangerous for me in post social media life, aside from discord servers, and i took a break from a couple of those too. even though i'm only in a couple, it's so easy to be caught up in my phone for hours talking to random people. which... is better than a social media algorithm but has the same bad impact rn like. i had put wikipedia on the block list lol i have fully accepted at this point that ADHD does not care about half-measures and self control is a limited resource btw, you're getting canadian citizenship but also moving back to the US? how come?
  25. i've been trying to break some of my scrolling habits going into the new year without much success so i decided to stop taking half measures i blocked a bunch of stuff forever, and it also blocks the add-ons page so it's stuck like this until i decide i'm done
