  1. I wanna say I THINK I know the origins of that GIF from an old Flash animation, but my memories are too hazy. That was a good Direct, really liked what I saw. Looks like I'm going to need to get another voucher ticket pack for Mario RPG and Wonder. Heh. And also, this popped up in my feed a while back. Someone leaked the PSN trailer for Fate: Samurai Remnant the day before and was immediately taken down. "This is going to show up in the Direct, isn't it?" Lo and behold in the JP Direct: It's going to be interesting to see Omega Force make an action RPG and not a Warriors game, maybe to not conflict with the Extella series. Oh yeah, this is getting a NA release roughly the same time.
  2. This was a good year for me, played a lot of games. Nintendo was there with two booths. NintendoVS, which is just where you play currently existing Nintendo multiplayer games, and one for Pokemon TCG, where if you play a round, you'll get a card and a Pinny Arcade pin. Unfortunately ToTK isn't there, but there is a photo booth for it there, and you can get a ToTK pin as well. May put up some of the Nintendo merch I got there in the merch thread. And oh, the Super Mario van was there as well for a short while. Alone in the Dark (2023 THQ Nordic remake) Based on the original 1990s version of the series, the demo they had was an prologue to the game proper. It felt like a classic Resident Evil in a way, appropriate given the game's history and its role in survival horror. It had more of a focus on exploration than fighting from what I've played, and it ended with a scene that's reminiscent of the opening of original game Gal Guardians: Demon Purge (Switch bound) Originally called "Grim Guardians" until legal issues happened with Grim Guard. This Portrait of Ruin inspired platformer is a quite a bit of fun. Inti Creates also sells JP version of their games, so I did pick up a Japanese copy of Grim Guardians, making it my very first import game, so it is something I am looking forward to playing some more. Why did they decide to settle on Gal Guardians. Well, it is a spinoff of... Gal Gun Returns (Switch bound) A very weird lightgun-like game where you are struck by a love arrow so powerful that EVERY girl in school falls for you. I've played Gal Gun 2 a fair bit. Didn't like it at first, due to its odd analog controls, but when I switched the gyro on, gameplay fits like a glove. It's an stupid and amusing game. Sadly the build I played did not have that option, so...yeah. Toxic Crusaders (Switch bound) A four-player coop belt scrolling beat-em-up. I joined in mid-game, so that means you can join in mid-game. I did not grow up with this series, so I'm not who anyone is except for Toxie. Just the fact that all four of us "juggled" the level boss is amazing. Classic tactic there. Garbage Pail Kids: Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum (Switch bound) This is a real NES game. As in I've played this on an NES clone console. I didn't grow up with GPK, but it is a very smooth platformer. All the kids play differently, and you can switch between them to fit whatever you need to do. They even have their own health bars. Curse Crackers: For Whom the Belle Toils A Game Boy Color/Neo Geo Pocket Color looking platformer where this your bunnygirl ex-friend kidnaps your boyfriend, and you gotta rescue him. It's a neat little game, bought it the next day. It's a mix of Mario, Wario Land, and I think they mentioned Kirby as well. Rift of the NecroDancer This follow up to Crypt of the NecroDancer primarily takes its inspiration from Guitar Hero and other rhythm games. Kinda like Crypt, the notes don't descend smoothly, but in steps to the rhythm. Every note has its own properties on how they are defeated, like bats will jump from lane to lane as you hit it. One of the skeletons will lost their head and get send back up the lane before falling back down. There is a Rhythm Heaven inspired yga segment that tests your timing skills, and a boss battle segment that feels ALOT like Punch-Out. I only had 15 minutes to play it, and as I beat the boss to finish the demo, the timer JUST ran out. One of the booth workers and I cheered at the timing of it. Elsie A very aggressive Megaman-style rouge-like. A lot of parrying and counters. It was kinda tough to get into, but since I've learned the timing on the parrying, it was some decent fun. Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (Switch bound) Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 (Switch bound) These two I'll link together since they are both kinda similar. This series I still need to get into. Reminds me a lot like Megaman Zero, with Luminous Avenger being the larger one of the two. Appropriate, since this series took the slack Capcom left behind. Honkai Star Rails From the makers of Genshin Impact (and the Switch port is unfortunately never to be found, I have a hunch it was developed for the now cancelled Switch Pro.), instead of an open world action RPG, it's a Final Fantasy X style Conditional Turn-Based RPG. Didn't play too much of it, since the copy the Intel booth was given was an actual beta it looked like and not a crafted demo. Idol Hell (Switch bound) Advertised as an accessible bullet hell shooter, and I think it earned it. I am pretty rusty on the genre, and the difficulty level I chose felt like a really good sweet spot. I liked this one. Street Fighter 6 Do I need to say more. Played as Ryu and Kim. I like it. Will need to learn how to use the Drive bar mechanics. They didn't have a dedicated booth, but Intel, Aorus, and I think IBuyPower had the game. Alien Hominid Invasion (Switch bound) It's more Alien Hominid. But instead of a linear platform shooter, each level felt like an arena, where you run around back and forth fulfilling objectives before escape. It was good to see this yellow alien again, and the characters in it. So...that's it. It was fun, will go back next year.
  3. Yeah, heard about this earlier in the day through an earlier GameXplain video talking about Digital Foundry's findings. Assuming it's going to use the same architecture, similar to how XBox Series X and Playstation 5 are doing succeeding the XBox One and Playstation 4. Also remembering how all the improvements made to the OLED model, and how it's odd that it didn't get a power upgrade. And considering the tech issues with supply chains over the past two years, maybe it's not worth a mid-gen upgrade. It would make sense to just drop what should've been released last year or so, and just move forward in a couple of years with a "Switch 2".
  4. It's been a long while since I've posted here, but these latest purchases, couldn't be even more happy, so just gotta share them. Got Pyra and Mythra last week, and I finally got around to opening the XC3 SE box. Unfortunately no plans to get Nia or Melia though.
  5. I've played a fair bit on XB1 thanks to Game Pass, and it's an experience like Enhance's other games. I have to wonder about how good its HD Rumble support is going to be. At least on XB1, they've taken advantage of the extra rumble in the triggers, setting it off every three or four beats. So it's rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble+trigger. Would imagine on Switch (Maybe PS4 as well), it'll be weak, weak, weak, strong. Something like that.
  6. Damn, that's sad to hear. I'll be getting it ASAP after I get some gift cards from Rite Aid. I've always enjoyed the Horizon series more than Motorsport. Though it is odd that the third installment gets delisted while the first two are still up there.
  7. Now I'm curious on what the future of id Tech is going to be like. It has been an internal use only engine for the last few versions, with I think Star Wars: Jedi Academy being one of the last ones. So, will it: Remain the same. Usable only with Bethesda/Zenimax Be open to other game studios within Microsoft Be open to the public, competing with Unity and Unreal.
  8. More on the subject on the game in the 3D Collection are emulations. Knowing the work done is actually incredible. Like with Mario 64, there is real time asset swapping. Something about Galaxy actually having a hybrid approach. Some of these things got too technical for me, but I kinda can see how some of this stuff was done. Like I know how, but the finer details are lost on me. Something like Galaxy however, their methods are lost on me. But this can be big. Like either an N64 Online, or future ports of Gamecube and Wii titles. MPT, anyone?
  9. Given the glorious shitstorm happening with Epic v. Apple, this might be a good way to coax former iOS players onto the platform. Sony did have a similar promotional deal, but it's only with a controller or headset, this is a whole console.
  10. Aside from the two disconnects I had in a row, it was good to be there playing for the full hour.
  11. Even with the tempered expectations that it's a mini, and a partner Direct. It still felt very sparse. Especially when you look at the Japanese Direct, which had some more games that are also coming out over here (Sakura of Rice and Ruin, and Alelier Ryza 2 comes to mind.) Not to mention, Crysis Remastered is coming out this week, that would have been a good headliner after the Cadence of Hyrule DLC announcement. And must agree some of the livestreamers, the two SMT announcements basically saved it on the English side.
  12. Listened/watched it with the GameXplain crew. The comments that were read said that Bakugan was apparently really popular back then, with one commenter said it was more popular than Pokemon at their school. Also heard that the games on the DS were good, but it sounds like the fanbase isn't too impressed with this reveal.
  13. "Why?" someone would ask. "Because I can," Brian would said. (Seriously, for Retro City Rampage, he created a DOS version. And he is interested in making one for this as well. And for the 3DS version of this game, he rewrote the graphics renderer just so it can hit 60FPS on both old and new instead of just the N3DS.)
  14. Downloaded it on Switch and Mobile. It's cute, not my kind of puzzle game though. The only thing I wished it had was cross platform cloud saves.
  15. It's kinda ironic given the announcement of Pokemon Unite. But on a more serious note, Nintendo did say in the past they are only going to release like five games over the course of its timeline, so given it looked like they fulfilled it, they are just going to maintain it. Fire Emblem Heroes is still their big money maker. I haven't played it as much as I use to. Dragalia Lost is in a weird spot. I still play this. But the game is EXTREMELY generous with its summoning material, and there isn't a real reason to roll duplicates. (Example: Fate Grand Order will boost the power of that character's NP/Super Special. KOF Allstar will give your tokens to raise your characters' max level.) Believe it or not, Nintendo actually made the order to be more generous with the materials, which made me wonder how much more it could have earned if they kept with their original plan. Also makes it odd, considering... Mario Kart Tour. I've slowed down on this game. But as far as I can see, given how they tickle summoning mats, it can be seen as P2W game. In terms of numbers, Using Panime's on anime gacha games video back in January, it looks like FEH earned $2.3 million, and Dragalia earned $942K in that month. At least in the US. In Japan, only FEH broke the top 30. Not sure how well they are actually doing, but since I still see some of the lower earning titles still going along (like DanMemo), I think they're going to be okay for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately given the video's focus, it didn't have something like Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. I would like to see the numbers for the other titles. Just looking at the list of top grossing games on Google Play, I see FEH above Fate Grand Order. Mario Kart Tour on the list just under Arknights. Obviously Pokemon GO will be one of the top earners, they won't let that one go. Unfortunately I cannot get into the App Store unless I have iTunes or an iPhone, so I cannot see the list there.
  16. Tencent is also involved in creating that Social Credit System. Just imagine a credit score on everything, even being a "good citizen". It's quite scary. Anyhow when disregarding the whole Tencent angle, a Pokemon MOBA may be a decent fit. It does have a large cast that you can choose from, and in some ways, seeing it played out the way it did made me understand the flow of a typical MOBA in that ten or so minutes more than something like LoL did in an hour of playing. But this is still going to be a pass, since I have no interest in a MOBA.
  17. Wait, that 11:00 race actually happened?! I knew I wasn't hearing something weird. Weird on how some of us got kicked out.
  18. Some thoughts. The games, I liked the few that I saw. Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon, and Sackboy would be the few. (I want a new Wipeout.) Even though this is a multiplatform game, Resident Evil VIII is a thumbs up as well. As for the console design? It's different, but as someone who prefers to set it on its side, I hate it. The fact that it looks like it needs a stand/base to support the opposite side of the disc drive is just ridiculous, and it calls into question on how stable it is, and how stressed will that particular side will be. The digital only version is fine on that standpoint. I will wait for the slim or pro revision.
  19. Over at CheapAssGamer, Frisky compiled a TWO-POST long list of deals, which I highly recommend checking out. Dude's a trooper for making it.
  20. Might spring for NSMBU Deluxe and Megaman Zero/ZX. Oh yeah, Humble Bundle is also taking part in Nintendo's Summer Game Sale as well. I would buy from them if they have the titles you want to maximize gold coin earnings, it is a much smaller list though.
  21. I'm sure someone has done it, either as a blog post or something, but it simply didn't get much traction. There has to be someone out there who is a big enough fan to play both the English and Japanese versions. Or maybe we've taken more accurate translations for granted in the past couple generations, barring some titles getting a 4Kids-esque treatment. I remember when we all first played it when it came out, I think the consensus was that it felt like a bad anime, with Samus being written like a bad waifu, so it sounds like it might be accurate. Nowadays, we've moved on from angry reviews to more long form analytical video essays over the past few years, so I guess it makes sense for this to pop up and get noticed. Now I wonder if we'll see some followups to the video, like someone else breaking it down. Is the new translation from this reveal more accurate? A comparison vid. Etc.
  22. Just another one in a list of example, not counting the ones that may have involved something like 4Kids. Got a feeling there is one or two other games in the past, Nintendo or non-Nintendo, on other other platforms. (I know the SNES/Genesis days has a fair amount of them, but that felt too easy a target.) === Just had a thought, if there is going to be port of this in the future, I would love to see them make the Japanese dub with re-translated script as an option. (Will doubt they'll get the money to redub it. Then again, why erase the history of the English dub and their script?) Though the fans might need to hammer their inbox to get it.
  23. -uses Google Translate's camera function on phone- Huh. I know he said the translator of the "true" version took liberties, usually on the how the dialogue flows. Makes me wonder how that particular monologue actually went.
