  1. I hope she's feeling okay.
  2. I'm probably going to pull an all-nighter sometime this next week for the first time in months. My sleep schedule is all out of whack and I think it needs a "hard reset" of sorts.
  3. I found comment 9001. It goes to @strawberrykeiki! Looks like I somehow managed to snag post 9000, with some hopefully exciting upcoming news.
  4. I was temporarily throttling my connection to 50 Kbps to see how Ninfora would load without anything in cache. Watching images slowly scroll into view. Man, that brings me back to last decade. Really amazed at how well Ninfora would run on a dial-up connection, though. I just doubt that will ever be of any practical use to anyone in this day and age, hahaha.
  5. In general, the sidebar seems like a pretty popular feature. What sort of information does everyone think is important to squeeze into there? Upcoming events are what I want to see the most, but what should the rest of the space be used for? Also, we may be adding support for other "widgets", such as the ability to see which Ninfora members are streaming on Twitch. @Pelord may be looking into that one.
  6. The events section was the area that I felt least comfortable moving. I'd love for that to be more prominent, but I also don't want it to be obtrusive. What I'd really love is to be able to compact things a bit more, especially on larger screens. The statistics near the bottom waste a bunch of space at higher resolutions, and it'd be fantastic if those could be merged into one block. I have installed a mod that lets us make custom blocks, though. I could probably extract the code from both of those widgets and combine it into one. Might be able to do something similar with upcoming events too.

It's a really, really common piece of "advice". It tends to do a lot of harm while not really solving anything at all. Fortunately, many people seem to be now recognising that it's bad practice, so maybe we'll see it go out of style soon. If you're mainly playing single-player RPGs and turn-based games, then 1440p is probably worth more to you than 144 Hz - but it's ultimately up to you to judge. I couldn't go back to 60 Hz personally, but I also couldn't go back to 1080p either.
  8. I have removed the sidebar from the front page to see how everyone feels without it. For reference, the sidebar contained recent topics, the popular contributors block, and an upcoming events section. I have moved the contributors block and the upcoming events section to the feed page, and removed the recent topics section entirely since it is relatively redundant. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of sidebars on index pages, and I prefer the cleaner aesthetic plus the modest load time improvement this gives (particularly on mobile). However, I recognise that some people may have preferred this sidebar, so I'd like to get some feedback regarding this change here. I'm not going to make this a poll - at least not yet. I'd like to see some genuine discussion, and only create a poll if you guys find this to be a polarising change. Similarly, if there are any other forum statistics or blocks that you would like to see added/moved/removed, this is a great place to let us know.
  9. With the huge amount of money I've saved on hosting alone between AWS Educate and some back-end improvements, I've decided to put Ninfora behind Cloudflare Pro. This gives us some fancy image optimisation that should further reduce the size of page loads yet, which is especially useful for anyone browsing on mobile. I have also re-enabled Rocket Loader after there were some previous issues with it. You may have noticed this if you went to the post editor and it suddenly took a couple of seconds to load. This is normal (though do report if you experience any issues). The page loader and several other JavaScript functions will now be loaded/parsed asynchronously, which boosts the speed you'll be able to browse between pages. Also, once you have the editor loaded once, it is cached in your browser's local storage so that it loads fast on subsequent uses. All-in-all, the site should be performing faster yet, and should use even less mobile data for anyone on a capped plan or slow connection!

Limiting FPS to your monitor's refresh rate without using vsync is a pretty silly thing that I wish people would stop recommending. You still get a lot of the extra input latency of vsync, but you get tearing and judder on top of that. Simple FPS caps in general don't do much good, especially if there's no proper frame pacing. Yes, vertical sync synchronises frames to your monitor, which eliminates tearing at the expense of some extra input lag. Also, if it ever takes more than 16.6 ms to render a frame, you'll have to wait for the next refresh before a new frame can be shown. In a way, naive vsync without a consistent framerate is like toggling between 30 and 60 FPS. I'd recommend giving this old AnandTech article a read. G-Sync/FreeSync are technologies that make your monitor refresh when there's new frames, instead of frames needing to display only when the monitor is ready to refresh. It's kinda like inverted vsync in a way. Instead of your graphics card needing to refresh at the same rate as your monitor, your monitor needs to refresh at the same rate as your graphics card. I use a 165 Hz 1440p G-Sync panel myself, and it's amazing. Adaptive sync is such an incredible technology that gives you the best of all worlds: You get the low input latency of no vsync, with no screen tearing similar to running with vsync, and the occasional slow frame no longer means you get a nasty hitch. Instead of having a 33 ms spike somewhere, you could have a spike as low as a couple milliseconds or less. Check out these Blur Busters articles on G-Sync: http://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/preview/ http://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/preview2/ The resolution drop would kinda stink, but 144+ Hz is definitely worth it. I've done some blind testing with several friends even, and the difference truly is night and day. It's like going from 30 FPS to 60 FPS - and that's no exaggeration. I always assumed people were overstating how great the benefits were, but then I got my own monitor with a high refresh rate and I just can't go back. Heck, the difference is so profound that I wound up ditching my secondary 60 Hz displays because even simple things like the mouse cursor were just so much less fluid. If you play games like CS:Go or Overwatch, then the high refresh rate is probably worth it despite only being 1080p. But if you're not too competitive of a gamer, then I'd recommend saving up until you can get at least 1440p with 144+ Hz, preferably with G-Sync or FreeSync too. But if you're looking for a stopgap until prices come down some more, than even a standard 1080p 144 Hz monitor will be eyeopening.
  11. Should just need some HTML added somewhere most likely. @CCH may be able to handle this one, otherwise Chrom or I will get to it at some point. Talked with Chrom about this one. Not sure what was up, but it wasn't theme-related. Will keep an eye on it. May be an issue on Chrom's end, or may be an issue with permissions on the receiving side's end.
  12. What all do you use the old machine for? If it's just for web browsing and other simple tasks, then you may enjoy giving Linux a whirl.
  13. Since when did hover text spoiler start semi-working? @CCH? @Chrom? I have a Hank Hill button for admins that I was using for testing spoiler2, but all it does is eat what's highlighted, so if you try to spoiler2 something it just
  14. I have almost as many posts as I do likes. Kind of.
  15. We're back after some brief, ~45-minute downtime. I greatly improved the storage capacity for the site, and as a result each member can upload up to 128 MB of files to the site, up from 8 MB.
  16. Just redeemed the credit, and it looks like AWS gives $150 worth of free credit to students with existing AWS IDs. Neat! That's enough to cover about three months of Ninfora!
  17. Awesome, looks like I'll be able to knock off ~$110 from an AWS bill for being a student. The GitHub Student Developer Pack has a hell of a lot of goodies. AWS credit. Unlimited private GitHub repositories. A free SSL certificate from Namecheap. Plus some other stuff that may be fun to play around with too. Should cover a couple months of hosting!
  18. I completed the Pokédex in Blue, and caught the original 150 in LeafGreen. I can't be bothered getting every Pokémon in any generation past gen 1, though. Too much effort for a bunch of Pokémon that I'm not even going to use!
  19. Will try to look into spoiler2 this weekend. :3

Your text anti-aliasing is funky. Has a really bad chromatic aberration effect on my display. Some Xeon chips out there are fantastic investments, though. They're basically i7 CPUs without the integrated graphics. Used hexa-core Xeons for X58 are particularly good buys for anyone still chugging along on that old platform.
