  1. I don't come in often but... hmm. There's no way for me to parse what you're saying without saying, yes, it has to do with privilege. First thing's first: people can be offended not because they want to look good or any personal optics or presentation, but because they care about other people. I remember back in 2015 how, after UCB did nothing to remove sexual assaulter and then-astrophysicist Goeffrey Marcy, how people expressing how they were offended helped push him out. And I wonder how many aspiring astrophysicist womens' lives and careers were helped by that gesture. Collective anger from people who are offended can be powerful, and it can do good. Secondly, you need to understand Gunn's ousting was done in bad faith. I certainly don't believe the right cares about pedophilia given how they handled Roy Moore; hell, I question how much Disney cares about optics since they're willing to keep Johnny Depp. But to generalize, and suppose, every case of being offended is done in bad faith? That is a really bad--and wrong--take. But importantly, the people who took to twitter or whatever and complained about Gunn? They were more interested in people like you, by making you feel hurt that a GotG director was removed by some non-existent "offense culture" so you'd find the idea of people being offended repulsive, and ultimately, invalid. Which is exactly what you are doing. So don't. Thirdly, I want to add collective anger isn't necessarily good. Jessica Price certainly didn't deserve to be removed from ArenaNET for calling out mansplaining. And yes, I'd argue because James Gunn was done in bad faith Disney should make reprimands--but I consider that different than Jessica Price since Gunn actually did something shitty (albeit years ago and apologized). I want to touch on this. Look, over a year ago I was making a stink about cultural appropriation dealing with an incident at Yale and Halloween costumes. That was wrong of me, I was making a mountain out of what may not have even been dignified to call a molehill. I bring that up to say past me would have agreed with you. But right now, I'm telling you that you are wrong to think this way. Here's the thing: those people in Beijing? They don't speak for everyone. Those thousands of Chinese-American voices speaking out? They matter. People in Beijing may not be able to speak to Chinese-American voices, let alone everyone speaking out. Finding the one contrarian doesn't invalidate the thousands who already spoke out, and it's that consensus that matters. I suppose, on a more personal note, what helped me the past year was reflecting why did I care about this so much? Who was I helping by pretending something that was a very real issue to many people wasn't? Those are questions worth asking, and the answer I came to (as uncomfortable as it is) is I cared more about the non-existent chance my privilege won't shield me than I did about people who had to live with oppression. It's not something I'm proud of and something I'm working my own small ways to undo and unlearn. But that's how it is. I guess, if there's anything to glean from my wall of text it's this: there are people out there who are offended on behalf of other people because they *care* about other people. The fact there are some bad faith actors a la Gunn's case does not invalidate the many many times the good faith factors are there. Secondly, you don't gain anything from invalidating those good faith actors. Whatever small comfort you might gain is temporary and not worth it. So, don't. brb, gonna contemplate why my posts always come out as a wall of text.

  5. Too bad I work most Thursdays now. I don't remember the last time I had a Thursday off. That should change in late August or early September though. We had to redo our availability for once the summer season is over and I was given a choice for an additional day off every week and I chose Thursday at that additional day off.

  7. early morning Yeah, I'm super excited about it. I visited back in June and loved it, so I'll be moving in with my friends outside Seattle around then.

  8. With 26 games left in the NBL season and not much time to get all the games in, the intention right now is to play nearly every day with a few scheduled doubleheaders. The playoffs are going to be truncated, with only the NWS being played in the premier league, pitting the regular season Miyamoto champion versus the regular season Yamauchi champion, who will both qualify for this year's Video Game World Baseball Classic. Any remaining spot(s) in the VGWBC will go to the next best teams in the 2018 Apertura standings that didn't already qualify from the 2017 Clausura or the 2018 C-stick Cup. Edit: This will mean that this season will function like MLB did 50 years ago before the introduction of divisions and the LCS...where the regular season AL and NL champ met in the World Series. Promotion from the Reserve League is not impacted as there are not any playoffs usually in the Reserve League anyway. For the championship league, in the absence of a playoff tournament for the 2nd through 5th place teams in each league, the 2nd place team in each league will earn promotion along with the 1st place teams, with the Arakawa and Iwata League champs facing off in the Minor League World Series for a spot in the VGWBC. Relegation will work as it always has, with the 15th and 16th placed teams in the Miyamoto and Yamauchi Leagues being relegated out of the Premier League to the Championship League, and the 15th and 16th placed teams in the Arakawa and Iwata Leagues being relegated out of the Championship and into the Reserve League.

  9. Intelligent Systems has been prepping for the Summer Party event starting soon and has been posting about it as of late. One post was about the omikuji (fortune telling) thing they'll be selling, which features a bunch of different character art as they appear on the cards. I just wanted to point out that one of these will apparently feature who appears to be Cordelia in artwork that hasn't been seen before, most likely for Series 14. Since Cordelia was already seen in a different illustration with Severa, this should mean there may be at least two new Cordelia cards next set. Male Corrin, Ike, and Mia are also already known to be for upcoming cards. Also, I would like to mention that it was recently announced that the special marker cards for the month of August are Eliwood, Lyn, Marth, and Sharena from Series 13. These will be entering the distribution pool of cards one can collect via card shops and official events, and subsequently any secondhand vendors.

  10. It's pretty much a domino effect. I am sure other companies will be hurting as well. We will see how much other stores are effected. If there is full stock during the holiday season at the toy isles, then pretty much majority of people have resorted to iPads and amazon for their children.

  11. I just don't see Target, Wal Mart, or whatever might be around in your area as far as big box merchants being able to take on the depth and variety of the toys offered via Toys R Us. This will be one wild 4th quarter in that regard. Who picks up the slack on variety and stock/supply? What store wants to add floor/shelf space for more toys?

  12. Now, why wasn't this found out sooner? Plus what came first the name of this game or the characters name? That is the real question I want answered.

  13. No real translated to English worthy news but I like this F-Zero medley music update, tho. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi has composed music for SEGA games like Shemune and Virtua Fighter. Going full circle with Sega helpled developed the last console F-Zero game, cool.

  14. I would hope it's not the game cards themselves cause then buying pre-owned would be a minefield. Although, I wonder if this did happen is there a way to make the distinction of the game and the system playing it so that if the game card was banned it's not as if it couldn't be used on another system and function normally. But that seems incredibly convoluted to begin with.

  15. https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/8sjwhg/warning_nintendo_are_banning_game_cards/ Just checked and it's rom dumps, not the cards themselves thankfully. Still they're not playing.

  16. I think it can be a challenge to talk about feelings in general, because any discussion about feelings could potentially be seen as invalidating another person's feelings. This is a really weird example, there is a discussion in the chat thread about Ugandan Knuckles and whether the meme is racist or not. As some users here like the meme, they are upset that others are calling the meme racist, as calling the meme racist would suggest they are racist. This is compounded by users saying things like "no one cares, shut up" when others discuss the meme. Now I'm of the belief that Uganda Knuckles is racist, though the meme it spun off from (Knuckles Sings) is not. But people like things, and things can be problematic. And people do tend to judge others based on what they like or don't like. This is true online as well, where it is so much easier to judge a person for what they like rather than what they're like, since discussions online are often superficial and barely scratch the surface of what the individual in question is truly like. For people online, it can be easy not to see other users as people, since you don't actually see them, just their words.

  17. The issue with cultural appropriation is that you're in no place to decide or come to the conclusion that the culture doesn't care. Having that one black friend who's okay with you saying the N-word doesn't mean every black person is fine with it. Just because your Native American friend doesn't mind drunk stereotypes or being the mascot of a football team doesn't mean all feel that way about it. If other people care about it, it's because they were likely informed by people in that culture that they do. I don't like this notion that people like being offended. Making that claim comes from a position of privilege because you have the luxury of not having to be defensive about something. I'm trans, I don't get to have the luxury of not giving a fuck. People _are_ out to get me and are repelled or aggressive towards me because of what I am. I'd love nothing more than to not be offended, but I have a massive target on my back. I have a right to be paranoid about how people treat me. I want shit to change so I can chill out and just be what I am without people being disgusted by it, but until then hell yeah I'm going to be offended by how people look at me.

  18. The issue with James Gun is that he was a shitheel nearly a decade ago and has actively reflected on how shitty of a person he was and worked to improve himself. The only reason that shit was dug up against him wasn't to make awareness of racism or whathaveyou, it was entirely done out of pettiness because he's been on a crusade calling out how terrible the right is and monsters like Cernovich were entirely motivated by spite to do it. Whataboutism is utter garbage to defend. Trump's trying to make peace with dictators who are not only actively hurting their country but interfering and harming ours, and he's ceding to them. Saying "there will always be crime" for a situation is a copout because you're indifferent to a problem that doesn't affect you or you don't understand the magnitude of which it does, and it doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to be better even if there's always going to be problems. It's selfish mindsets like that which divide the country more than anything else because as long as it's not affecting you, it's not something you care about. You can't understand the bigger picture if you don't understand how smaller things work into it. Selective political apathy and centrism have arguably been just as big of problems to how the country functions as the left vs. right mentality that's set in. I'd rather take an argumentative asshole because they have something they care about enough that it's important for them to fight for it than somebody who just shrugs their shoulders and goes "why can't we all agree to disagree and get along?" just because they want to be indifferent to other people's problems that are affecting their lives.
